  • Conservation treatments were done for the gilt bronze saddle accessory excavated from Tomb No. 89 in Kyo-dong, Changnyong in Japanese rule period. The saddle accessory, broken into numerous pieces, was mixed with other remains. Principal aims of conservation treatments were to recover original shape of object and stabilize its material. In the process of treatments manufacturing technique of the remain was examined minutely. Thick layers of corrosion substances were peeled off and numerous pieces were pasted together to restore the original shape. And then the saddle accessory was mounted on an acrylic board to be handled and exhibited safely. In this process, it was confirmed that various ancient techniques of metalic crafts such as amalgam gilding, riveting, piercing, line engraving, stamping, chasing etc. had been used to make the saddle accessory.

  • Kings of many generations in Chosun Dynasty considered the Zhu-Zi's Zizhitongjiangangmu as an important history book. When Sarim appeared to the front of main political arena since Chung jung, it had been common for regional administrator to publish and distribute books with the need for text-type resources. Zizhitongjiangangmu published by Jikji-temple in Kimchun area is a valuable resource that contains the purpose of publishing those books and describes the process of publishing and engraving in detail. The Annals of the Chosun Dynasty and Miamilgi also provides detailed descriptions of the process of how to transfer those woodblock-printed books to the Kyosokwan, which had been engraved by several regions and gathered together into Jikji-temple. Therefore, this research analyzed the contents contained in The Annals of the Chosun Dynasty and Miamilgi and connected them to postscript of Zizhitongjiangangmu published by Jikjitemple in order to identify the characteristics of regional publications in the latter part of the 16th century.

  • this study was designed to discuss the pattern of Confucian funeral ceremony and its costumes in Chosun dynasty thereby exploring the ideas and symbolic meanings expressed on them. 1. Male's official mourning dresses were composed of Choieui symbolizing sadness Choisang(최상), Dukun Sangkwan Sujil Yojil Kyodai and mourning stick Female's official mourning dresses consisted of Daersoojangkon and Kaedoo which were of simple kinds as compared to those of males. Duration of wearing mourning dreses was the longest to the death of father husband and eldest son The forms of mouring dresses were one and the same irrespective of the noble and the mean which expressed the sameness of the sorrow full of losting blood relative. Symbol expressed on funeral ceremony costumes were something like "eldestson-oriented" "male-centered" "distinction of the sexes" and "principle of yin and yang" to reinforce vitality to the costumes. 2. In the other funeral ceremony costumes in a royal fami8ly were those Euijangsu in red and blue colors Yeosakon in purple and white colors. • Buddhist image engraved on the bronze mirror in the Goryo period were conserved in 1986 and 1996, respectively. As the time passed, re-conservation was required that powdered copper corrosion product on the mirror image occurred. Accordingly, additional conservation including stabilization and consolidation were carried out to prevent further corrosion. The powder filled in the line of the buddhist image and the chasing techniques were examined using microscope and portable X-ray fluorescence analyzer. The result showed that composition of powder were gold, silver and calcium(calcite or gypsum). The main chasing techniques used to engrave pattern seemed to be dotted-line, hairline and the kicking-line engraving.

  • Currently, an EDM tapping procedure has comprised some parts of the engraving discharge process for the press die. Usually, tapping has been used in cases where we are unable to mechanically machine using steelwork processes due to an increase in the hardness of a material after heat treatment in relation to a design change or missing process. Here, we analyze the influence of discharge tap shape on discharge time, discharge current, and the number of repetition conditions when a cold-work tool steel (STD11) has been treated with a discharge tapped by a screw-shaped cu electrode. The most important influence on processing condition has been determined to be the number of discharge repetitions. As this number increases, the angle reduction of a thread closes to an angle of the electrode via a power generation reduction. The optimal combination of conditions has been determined to be three discharge repetitions, $180{\mu}s$ of discharge time (same as existing regulations), and 25.4A of peak current. A 0.2749db advantage has emerged after comparing between this combination of optimal conditions and the SN rate of existing regulations.

  • In this paper, we discussed three cases to see the effects of the characteristics of Hangul writing system. In applications such as computer Hangul shorthands for ordinary people and pushbuttons with Hangul characters engraved, we found that there is much advantage in using Hangul. In case of Hangul Transliteration, we discussed some problems which are related with the characteristics of Hangul writing system. Shorthands use 3-set keyboards in England, America, and Korea. We saw how ordinary people can do computer Hangul shorthands, whereas only experts can do computer shorthands in other countries. Specifically, the facts that 1) Hangul characters are grouped into syllables (syllabic blocks) and that 2) there is already a 3-set Hangul keyboard for ordinary people allow ordinary people to do computer Hangul shorthands without taking special training as with English shorthands. This study was done by the author under the codename of 'Sejong 89'. In contrast like QWERTY or DVORAK, a 2-set Hangul keyboard cannot be used for shorthands. In case of English pushbuttons, one digit is associated with only one character. However, by engraving only syllable-initial characters on the phone pushbuttons, we can associate one Hangul "syllable" with one digit. Therefore, for a given number of digits, we can associate longer words or more meaningful words in Hangul than in English. We discussed the problems of the Hangul Transliteration system proposed by South Korea and suggested their solutions, if available. 1) We are incorrectly using the framework of transcription for transliteration. To solve the problem, the author suggests that a) we include all complex characters in the transliteration table, and that b) we specify syllable-initial and -final characters separately in the table. 2) The proposed system cannot represent independent characters and incomplete syllables. 3) The proposed system cannot distinguish between syllable-initial and -final characters.

  • The objectives of this study are to survey publications of the chinese version of surviving to the present day and to analyze their characteristics systematically based on physical bibliographical assessment of its 42 versions. Important findings are following: During the Chosun Dynasty, the largest number(69%) of publication and distribution of was from the Youngrak Version(Ming Books) of "ShiJundaquan", of which reversely engraved editions, typologic editions, and the reversely engraved editions of the typologic editions were found. Among 42 versions, 14 reversely engraved editions are originated from the Youngrak Version. Those from earlier versions to the versions right after ImjinWar were similar to Youngrak Version in morphological characteristics, later some editions were found to be far different from Youngrak Version by repeating the reverse engraving. As for the publication time of , most editions were printed in the 18th century. The publication region of was also examined, Gyeonggi and Gyeongsang regions are the most frequent printing places. Typologic editions were printed mainly at Gyeonggi region, and the reversely engraved editions from Ming Books were printed at Gyeongsang region as Gamyeongbon (the books from Supervisory Office).

  • This study conducted non-destructive analyses of the material features of seven gilt-bronze crowns of Baekje Kingdom that were excavated in the Cheonan, Gongju, Seosan, Iksan, Naju, and Hapcheon areas. A typical Baekje gilt-bronze crown has a conical inner crown and an outer crown embellished with vertical ornaments on the front and the back, a tube topped with a hemispherical ornament, and other ornamentation. Diverse designs (e.g., dragon, bonghwang, flowers, and plants) were applied using a range of techniques, including repoussé, chasing, openwork, and engraving. Formal features differ among the crowns according to their period of production and site of excavation. The substrate metal of the crowns is either pure copper or mixed copper with a small amount of lead. The crowns were amalgam-plated on the surface with pure gold or gold with a small amount of silver. The crown from Okjeon Tomb No. 23 in Hapcheon in the ancient Gaya region has a high silver content, which appears to be a regional feature. In addition, this crown from Okjeon Tomb No. 23, which can be categorized as Baekje-style gilt-bronze crown, seems to be plated at most three times, while the gilt-bronze crowns found within Baekje Kingdom territory were plated once or twice.

  • This study is to examine the manufacturing technique based on scientific investigation and analysis on Steel-Plated Jewel Beetle's Adornment gilt-bronze openwork remains excavated from No. 100 site at Hwango-dong Gyeongju. As a result of the investigation on the manufacturing revealed that riveting was adopted to connect gilt-bronze openwork plates and steel plates, followed by mercury amalgam plating method and carving of the patterns by means of the dotted line engraving technique. There were some traces on the surface of Jewel Beetle wings that show the use of pins for fixing, which seems to be the result of recycling or processing. The sectional analysis shows the high possibilities that varnishing with lacquer was adopted for wing adhesion, and it was confirmed that varnishing with lacquer was used on the strap pendant plate to prevent corrosion.
