The present study investigated the effect of sentence translation as a production task on short-term and long-term retention of foreign vocabulary. 87 EFL university students at a beginning level, enrolled in reading class participated in the study. The study compared the performance of three groups on vocabulary recall: (1) Control group, (2) Translation group, and (3) Copy group. During the treatment sessions, translation group translated L1 sentences into English, while copy group simply copied given English sentences with each target word. Results of the immediate test were collected each week from week 2 to week 5 and analyzed by one-way ANOVA. Results revealed that regarding short-term vocabulary retention, participants in rote-copy condition outperformed those in translation group. Four weeks later a delayed test was administered to measure long-term vocabulary retention. In contrast, the results of two-way repeated measures ANOVA showed that long-term vocabulary retention of translation group was significantly greater than copy group. The findings suggest that although sentence translation is rather challenging to low-level learners, it may facilitate long-term retention of new vocabulary given the more elaborate and deeper processing the task entails.

A brief consultation of English Arabic dictionaries and encyclopedias shows that there is no one single standard Arabic translation of the English concept 'democracy'. Arab authors use, instead, a series of multiple terms that need clarification if the first term is to be clear. In many cases, they tend to localize the term into Arabic using various orthographic forms; at other times, they run a rather lengthy analysis to elucidate the concept that seems to be an essentially contested term. This paper aims to inquire into the reasons for the confusion and inconsistency in the translation of the concept 'democracy', as well as the underlying arguments for advocating the localization rather than translation of this political concept. This will be followed by a discussion of the implications of this study for lexicographers and translators. Given the fact that ideology is of non-Arabic origin, English perceptions of this fluid concept might help account for its lack of clarity in Arabic translations since Arabic is highly influenced by English in various spheres of life. It would thus be wise first to check the perceptivity of English authors of the concept. To better serve the purpose of this study, the author distinguishes here between 'translation' and so-called 'localization'. The term 'translation' is concerned with finding an existing term in the target language with an equivalent meaning for a foreign word, whereas localization involves taking the foreign term and making it linguistically and culturally appropriate to the target language, by subjecting it to the morphological and syntactic rules of Arabic to be used as if it were originally Arabic.

전문용어는 전문분야의 개념을 표현하는 언어적 표현이다. 전문용어의 조어단위는 전문용어를 구성하는 최소의 형태적 단위이다. 따라서 조어단위는 전문용어의 의미를 파악하는데 중요한 요소이다. 하지만 조어단위를 이용한 전문용어의 의미파악은 ‘조어단위와 개념단위의 불일치 문제’, 조어 단위의 ‘동형이의어’, ‘동의어’문제 둥으로 인한 어려움이 있다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 하나의 개념을 나타내는 조어단위의 덩어리인 개념단위를 파악하는 작업이 선행되어야 한다. 본 논문에서는 영어의 조어단위를 하나의 개념단위로 정의하고 개념단위에 대응되는 한국어 조어단위의 집합을 개념단위로 인식한다. 개념단위의 파악과정은 영한 대역 전문용어사전에 대한 영어-한국어 조어단위 정렬문제로 해결하고자 한다. 본 논문의 기법은 물리, 화학, 생물 분야에 대한 조어정렬 실험을 수행하였으며, 평균 약 $93\%$의 정확률로 조어단위 간의 정렬을 수행하였다

본 연구는 미국영어 화자의 평균적 음향 스펙트럼 분포를 확보한 후 과학영재학교 재학생의 영어발화 양상을 비교하여 상대적으로 우수한 지적 역량을 갖춘 우리나라 과학영재들의 초분절적 영어 유창성 양상을 규명하고, 그 근접성 정도가 영재학교 학생의 영어 과목 정기고사 성취도와 어떤 관계성을 갖는지 탐구하고자 진행되었다. 불과 수 초에서 수십 초에 불과한 음성녹음 데이터 위주로 분석을 시행했던 종래의 연구와 달리 총 4시간에 달하는 미국영어 원어민 화자(남성 15명, 여성 15명)의 음성녹음 자료를 MATLAB(R2022a; The Math Works) 코드로 분석하여 20 -20,000 Hz 주파수 범위 내의 대역별로 장기 스펙트럼 음향에너지 분포값을 확보했으며, 이를 기준으로 과학영재학교 1학년 신입생 80명의 녹음데이터 LTASS(long-term average speech spectrum) 분석 수치와 비교한 결과, 영어 과목 학기말고사의 학업성취도 수준이 상위 30% 이내인 학생들의 표본을 제외하고는 미국영어 음향에너지 분포와의 근접성이 통계적으로 유미하지 않다고 밝혀졌다. 영재학교 입학 후 영어 성취도를 예측하기 위한 지표를 발견하기 위해 수용성 어휘크기검사(receptive vocabulary size test), 학기 중 복수 회 실시한 영어 어휘 형성평가 퀴즈 누적 점수, 공인 영어말하기시험(English Speaking Proficiency Test, ESPT) 성취도를 추가 변량으로 하여 정기고사 성취도와의 상관관계 분석 및 각 변량 간 선형 회귀분석을 시행하였는데, 대개 유년시절 완성되는 영어 유창성을 측정하는 ESPT보다는, 1학기 및 2학기 초 실시한 수용성 어휘크기검사 및 수과학 분야 저빈도 어휘 위주 형성평가 점수와의 통계적 유의성이 월등히 높다는 사실이 관찰되었다. 따라서, 본 연구로부터 확보된 이론적 기반을 토대로 국내 영재학교에서는 발음교육보다 과학영재를 주요 대상으로 한 전문적 수준의 저빈도어휘 교육이 보다 효과적인 교수 요목이라 추정할 수 있다.

This study investigates Korean university students' perception of TOEIC courses taught by Korean and native English teachers and test results in an effort to identify better methodologies to teach TOEIC. To find out the student's perceptions of TOEIC classes, a survey was conducted. The one hundred sixty students who attended the TOEIC courses participated in a questionnaire survey at the end of the semester. Based on a survey of students' assumptions toward TOEIC classes and teachers, this paper discusses the skills students feel important to improve their TOEIC scores and what their actual scores show. The research questions were: 1) what are some of the benefits of having a Korean or native English teacher for TOEIC courses? 2) what are some of the drawbacks of having a Korean or native English teacher for TOEIC courses? The results indicated that Korean and native English teachers have an equal chance to become successful teachers, but the methods used by the two groups are not the same in the context of teaching TOEIC courses; in the short term, direct test preparation, dictation and repetition by Korean or native teachers might be good methods for TOEIC courses, however, in the long term, conversation and discussion performed by native teachers may affect scores in a positive way.

In this paper, I introduce the development of a system to register Korean standard technical terms which are corresponded with English electronical terminologies on the Electropedia of the International Electronical Committee(IEC). In 2016, this project was started with the permission of registration at the Technical Committee 1 of the $80^{th}$ IEC General Meeting in Frankfurt, Germany. The work was consisted of 3 parts, the 1st step was gathering Korean vocabularies and building a databse for the translation of English terms of International Electronical Vocabulary(IEV) into Korean terms, the 2nd step was to find correct or proper Korean term which is in accord with each English term of IEV on the Electropedia. In this step, members of Korean TC 1 worked for search proper Korean terms using developed computer programs and databases which were made of Korean electronical dictionaries. After selection of proper terms, they did the cross-checking work for Korean terms each other. The last step was to register all of these Korean terms on the Electropedia. As a result, 20,766 Korean electronical terms were registered on the Electropedia in 2017. In the future, it is needed that the definition of English technical terms are translated into Korean.

English immersion has emerged in Korea only recently as an innovative approach to learning and teaching English. Lack of real life experience of using English has been one of the biggest obstacles for Korean learners of English and has resulted in an increasing number of children being sent to English-speaking countries and a huge amount of dollar outflow. This recent innovation is expected to be the magic wand to resolve all these problems. However, setting up an immersion program in a typical EFL context like Korea has brought in another set of issues and challenges. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of a short-term immersion English program in Korea and provide some empirical data to develop programs that can better cater to the needs of EFL learners. A two-week English immersion program was developed and implemented with 57 Korean and Japanese students whose grade level ranged from 4 to 12. The study results show that the program was successful in terms of changing the participants' attitude toward learning English, improving their English skills, enhancing intercultural understanding and competence, and motivating them for further studies of English and other foreign languages and cultures.

The concept of the "Seidenstrassen" (Silk Road) was created by the German geographer F. von Richthofen (1833-1905) in 1877. The "Seidenstrassen" means communication between China and the Roman cultural area. To prove the route of dissemination of silk, Richthofen not only focused on geographical substantiality, based on the routes of the Chinese Zhang Qian and the Roman Ptolemy, but also on etymological, historical, and religious sources. In fact, his Silk Road concept has the trade of silk as well as the humanistic ideas of cultural exchange. It is worth noting that in his book China, Richthofen presented the Silk Road as a space-time concept that considers the length of space as well as the length of time by highlighting humanistic examples that came into modern times through the Sea Route. Later, the English term "Silk Road" appeared in 1938, the Japanese term "シルクロ-ド" (sirukurodo) in 1939, and the Korean term "실크로드" (silkrodeu) in 1952.

용어추출은 도메인 텍스트 모음으로부터 도메인 용어 목록을 인식하는 작업이다. 용어추출의 기존 효과적인 방법들은 비교사 방식으로 동작하며, 후보 용어 집합을 추출하는 작업과 후보 용어에 용어중요도를 할당하는 작업을 주요 단계로 포함한다. 후보 용어의 용어중요도 계산과 관련하여 본 논문에서는 후보 용어의 내부 및 외부용어집합을 활용한다. 내부용어집합은 후보 용어에 포함된 다른 짧은 용어들의 집합이며, 외부용어집합은 후보 용어가 포함된 다른 긴 용어들의 집합이다. 본 논문에서는 후보 용어의 내부 혹은 외부용어집합으로부터 후보 용어의 용어 강도를 계산하는 다양한 강도 함수들을 제시하고, 이들 용어 강도 값들과 C-value 점수를 결합하는 용어중요도 계산 방법을 소개한다. 생물학 및 전산언어학 분야 영어 데이터셋을 사용한 성능 평가에서는 제안된 방법의 용어추출 성능을 비교하고 분석한다. 제안된 방법은 생물학 및 전산언어학 분야 데이터셋에 대해 각각 최대 1%와 3% 차이의 성능 향상을 보였다.

해사영어는 선박 운항, 해양 안전, 선내 의사소통 및 선외 교신을 위해 설계된 특수한 영어 언어체계이다. 국제해사기구 STCW(선원의 훈련, 자격증명 및 당직근무의 기준에 관한 국제협약)에 따르면 국제항해에 종사하는 항해사가 되기 위해서는 SMCP를 포함한 해사영어 대한 충분한 이해가 수반되어야 한다. 본 연구는 음성인식, 번역, 단어 기입 등 유형의 해사영어시험을 통하여 학생들의 해사영어 활용 능력을 측정하고 플랫폼 사용에 따른 시험 점수 향상 정도, 나아가 초임항해사로 나가기 위하여 요구되는 해사영어 시험 플랫폼 활용 시간 등을 조사하고자 하였다. 실험은 먼저 초기 시험을 통해 학생들의 일반영어능력과 SMCP 활용 능력에 대한 연관성을 조사한 후, 중간 시험 및 최종 시험을 통해 플랫폼 활용에 대한 점수 향상 정도, 응시시간 변화 등 요인을 측정하였다. 초기 시험을 통해 개인 요인(예: 토익 점수, 본인 스스로에 대한 영어능력 평가)에 따른 그룹 간 해사영어시험 점수에 유의한 차이가 있음을 확인하였으며, 중간시험 및 최종시험을 통해 플랫폼 활용이 유의한 시험점수 향상으로 이어졌음을 확인하였다. 해당 연구는 해사 교육분야에 다양하게 적용할 수 있는 학습 플랫폼 활용 효능을 조사하였으며 향후 해사영어 교육 외 그 범위를 넓혀 활용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
