This study proposes using children's literature as a means of teaching and learning English as a foreign language and suggests practical strategies on the basis of transactional theory of reading suggested by Rosenblatt (1994, 1995). This study suggests three novels written for children or young adults: On My Honor (1986) by Marion Dane Bauer, The Giver (1993) by Lois Lowry and Hatchet (1987) by Gary Paulsen. These texts were selected because of their diverse topics, easy and comprehensible language, engaging stories, and authentic and rich expressions, making them effective materials for foreign language learners. This paper is organized as follows: First, it reviews research on teaching literature in English education and response-oriented language teaching to provide theoretical background of literature-based language teaching and learning. Second, it provides the background of the texts selected for the study. Third, it develops diverse, practical strategies for instructors who intend to use children's literature in EFL teaching. We expect to guide EFL instructors in adopting children's literature in their English class by connecting theory and practice and by providing diverse methods and strategies, and sample responses by EFL university students.

This study examined which acoustic cue(s) that Korean learners of English give weight to in perceiving English lexical stress. We manipulated segmental and suprasegmental cues in 5 steps in the first and second syllables of an English stress minimal pair "object". A total of 27 subjects (14 native speakers of English and 13 Korean L2 learners) participated in the English stress judgment task. The results revealed that native Korean listeners used the F0 and intensity cues in identifying English stress and weighted vowel quality most strongly, as native English listeners did. These results indicate that Korean learners' experience with these cues in L1 prosody can help them attend to these cues in their L2 perception. However, L2 learners' perceptual attention is not entirely predicted by their linguistic experience with specific acoustic cues in their native language.

본 연구는 남북한 영어교과서에 나타난 어휘를 비교하여 영어어휘의 양적 질적인 차이를 알아보고 궁극적으로 남북한 통일 영어교과서에 담을 영어어휘 목록을 만드는데 필요한 기초적인 작업을 진행하는데 있다. 이를 위해 2000년대에 출간된 남북한 영어교과서로 코퍼스를 구축하여 어휘목록을 추출하고 이들 남북한 영어교과서 코퍼스를 비교하였다. 어휘목록의 추출은 남한 영어교과서의 경우는 7차교육과정 이후 출간된 교과서에서 추출하고 북한 영어교과서의 경우는 김정일정권시대인 2000년대 이후 영어교과서로 코퍼스를 구축하고 그 코퍼스에서 어휘목록을 만들어서 비교하였다. 이를 위해서 AntConc 3.5.7을 사용하여 어휘목록을 추출하고 콘코던스를 통해서 어휘목록에 나온 어휘의 사용맥락을 살펴보면서 점검하였다. 이를 통해서 남북한 영어 어휘의 양적 질적 비교를 통해서 그 차이점들을 도출하였다. 양적으로 남북한이 영어교과서를 통해서 학습해야 할 어휘는 양적으로 비슷하게 3000 단어 내외였으나 북한 영어교과서의 경우 전문학술 어휘가 좀 더 많이 나타났다. 자본주의 시장경제를 따르는 남한과 사회주의 계획경제를 따르는 북한 영어교과서에는 이와 관련된 어휘의 사용과 의미적 차이가 발견되었다. 아울러, 종교와 문법 용어의 사용에 있어서 차이가 나타났다.

해사영어는 선박 운항, 해양 안전, 선내 의사소통 및 선외 교신을 위해 설계된 특수한 영어 언어체계이다. 국제해사기구 STCW(선원의 훈련, 자격증명 및 당직근무의 기준에 관한 국제협약)에 따르면 국제항해에 종사하는 항해사가 되기 위해서는 SMCP를 포함한 해사영어 대한 충분한 이해가 수반되어야 한다. 본 연구는 음성인식, 번역, 단어 기입 등 유형의 해사영어시험을 통하여 학생들의 해사영어 활용 능력을 측정하고 플랫폼 사용에 따른 시험 점수 향상 정도, 나아가 초임항해사로 나가기 위하여 요구되는 해사영어 시험 플랫폼 활용 시간 등을 조사하고자 하였다. 실험은 먼저 초기 시험을 통해 학생들의 일반영어능력과 SMCP 활용 능력에 대한 연관성을 조사한 후, 중간 시험 및 최종 시험을 통해 플랫폼 활용에 대한 점수 향상 정도, 응시시간 변화 등 요인을 측정하였다. 초기 시험을 통해 개인 요인(예: 토익 점수, 본인 스스로에 대한 영어능력 평가)에 따른 그룹 간 해사영어시험 점수에 유의한 차이가 있음을 확인하였으며, 중간시험 및 최종시험을 통해 플랫폼 활용이 유의한 시험점수 향상으로 이어졌음을 확인하였다. 해당 연구는 해사 교육분야에 다양하게 적용할 수 있는 학습 플랫폼 활용 효능을 조사하였으며 향후 해사영어 교육 외 그 범위를 넓혀 활용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

The current study reported on the continuing relevance of the schema theory for reading as it relates to the field of teaching and SLA, whilst highlighting the inherent limitations affecting individual learners. A relevant study was conducted for this article focusing on the extent to which university teacher trainees of English Education are exposed to second language readings with an adherence towards utilizing prior knowledge and drawing upon schemata to support their comprehension. Results from quantitative and qualitative data measured and collected from two groups of university students respectively, indicated certain advantages to this strategy use in respect of increased understanding, familiarity, and comfort level in SL reading. However, those same results identified existing limitations associated with cultural bias, stereotyping and a tendency to focus on wrong information when activating said schemata. As such, the purpose of this study is to promote awareness of the schema theory as an effective strategy option whilst reinforcing a need to pay heed to the concerns associated with strict reliance upon such theory to aid reading skills. Further discussion of these issues and pedagogical implications has been provided along with both suggested considerations regarding teaching for EFL teachers and evaluators.

College students frequently feel their grammar knowledge from primary and middle school is not useful when they are asked to speak in college conversation classes. Because of their frustration at their lack of communicational ability as well as inappropriate teaching methods and class textbooks that have little to do with the student's major course of study, the student often has a low motivation to study. It is not uncommon for students to seek English education outside of their college classrooms by going to language institutes or studying abroad. College teachers need to find a way to use the student's background in grammar from primary and secondary schools. Despite the student's sentiment about his/her grammar education, grammar is an essential key to successful English conversation. Some ways that teachers can close the gap between primary and secondary school grammar education and college conversation classes are: to use a theme-based methodology, cue cards, and modeling. Activities such as Grammar Clinic, Grammar Police, and Show and Tell can be effective ways to bridge this gap. Teachers can use these activities and methods to correct such student errors as: incorrect word order, missing or unnecessary be verbs, confusion between be and do verbs, subject-verb agreement. and incorrect tense.

현재 아동을 대상으로 한 원격교육관리시스템은 그 수가 미미할 뿐만 아니라 주로 성인을 대상으로 한 원격교육시스템을 모델로 하였기 때문에 아동의 교육적 특성을 충분히 반영하지 못하였다. 본 연구에서는 아동의 교육적 흥미를 극대화하기 위하여 보다 효과적인 웹기반 실시간 원격영어교육관리시스템의 기능들을 제안하고자 한다. 특히 실제로 원격영어교육시스템을 이용하고 있는 초등학생들을 대상으로 하여 사용실태조사를 하고 이를 토대로 실시간, 양방향 교육서비스 제공의 필요성을 논의하고 학부모들에게 자녀의 교육과정을 실시간으로 관람토록 함으로써 보다 효율적인 아동교육프로그램을 제공하는 교육관리시스템을 제안하고자 한다.

This paper investigated the influence of foreign words, otherwise known as loan words, on global communication abilities of university students from two non English-speaking countries: Korea and Japan. To survey the understanding and usage of foreign words which are from English language and used frequently in daily conversation, questionnaires were administered to Korean and Japanese university students majoring in engineering who shared similar linguistic backgrounds. The results were analyzed from global communication viewpoint. Based on the results, methods for improving global communication skills in engineering education were proposed.

Purpose - The recent establishment of many varieties of English language in the globe has created many models of English such as world Englishes (WEs), English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), English as a family of languages, and English as an Intercultural Language (EIcL). Among the models, the present study highlights 'English as an intercultural language (EIcL)' in relation to distribution science business English teaching to elucidate what EIcL is and why it is critical and how it can be realized in the business English classrooms. Research design, data, and methodology - This study look into the EIcL paradigm that empowers all active users to view English as universal and at the same time enables them to develop critical skills to bridge intercultural gaps or to cross borders. Results - Rather than just focusing on an acquisition of standardized English(es), EIcL serves as a major contextual factor facilitating success in getting competence among the different English languages. Conclusions - EIcL is a promising and ultimately rewarding approach to the contemporary business English teaching arena. EIcL should be achieved through policies, textbooks or living abroad, and, above all, learners/teachers' active awareness and understanding' of the EIcL mainstreams.

최근 스마트폰 보급에 따른 디지털 네이티브의 등장으로 교육에 있어서도 이에 걸 맞는 변화가 필요하게 되었다. 기존의 E-Learning, U-Learning 을 보다 학습자 중심, 맞춤형 교육에 근접하도록 실현할 수 있는 교수학습용 자료와 소프트웨어가 필요한 것이다. 이에 따라 초등학생의 발달 단계에 맞는 음성언어 중심의 영어 학습 프로그램을 교육과학기술부가 추천하는 초등학생을 위한 영어 단어를 기반으로 한 스마트폰에서 학습할 수 있도록 어플리케이션을 설계하고 구현하여 초등학교 학교 현장에서의 스마트러닝의 적용 및 발전을 위한 창의적인 아이디어를 제시해 보고자 한다.
