A study on the reform of the liberal arts curriculum based on key competencies for the innovation of liberal arts education in Universities (대학 교양교육 혁신을 위한 핵심역량 기반 교양 교육과정 개편에 대한 연구 -C 대학 사례를 중심으로)

  • The 21st century of the 4th industrial revolution demands 'competency' as a new educational concept that is different from that required in the industrialization era. In accordance with these changes and demands of society, universities are being called for key competency-based education and innovation in education through this by breaking away from the existing methods in liberal arts and major education. At this point, universities are presenting a comprehensive reform of liberal arts education for various financial support projects. This study presents the case of University C regarding the reform of the liberal arts curriculum for the innovation of liberal arts education in universities. According to the research results, each university is reorganizing the liberal arts curriculum in a way that can suggest various key competencies according to the university's founding philosophy and induce key competencies in the aspect of liberal arts education. For the key competency-based liberal arts curriculum of University C, we proposed various subjects for insufficient key competency subjects, various micro-degrees were proposed to specialize liberal arts education, and meta-learning-related liberal arts subjects were presented to improve basic learning ability of the students.

  • For engineers in the knowledge-based society of the 21st century, not only the specialty in their major field, but also the capabilities of creative thinking/reading/writing, of communication and of understanding society/business/economy, and the knowledge of specialized liberal arts, like ethics, are required. For the specialized liberal arts knowledge, it is important to have interest in a field, read the relevant literature, and summarize and express thoughts, but in reality, it is difficult to accomplish a higher level of learning outcome within the limited regular curriculum. In this study, an application for smart phones that purports to cultivate the specialized liberal arts knowledge of the students enrolled in the college of engineering was developed and applied to classes. Under this environment, a teacher can interact with teacher's students through the structured knowledge on a real-time basis in any place at any time, and the students can reorganize the knowledge by themselves. In this way, this paper proposed a way of improving the level of specialized liberal arts knowledge in daily life.

  • Many colleges in Korea have been making a concentrated effort to develop engineering certification education programs, fit for the certification standards and the reality of each college. However, in reality, many colleges and departments in Korea have great difficulties in making the curriculums meet the engineering certification standards to be proper for the present situation of each college. Therefore, this study aims at suggesting the most general way to make a specialized liberal arts curriculum for the colleges preparing for the engineering certification. When this is applied to the architectural engineering program curriculums of each college, students will be able to take specialized liberal arts subjects which are appropriate for their future careers and aptitudes, and also enterprises will be able to curtail educational expenses for their new employees and hire competent people who combine fundamental personality, basic knowledge about the work, and foreign language proficiency. Furthermore, the nation will be able to secure national competitive power through systematization of engineering education and realistic educational systems.

An Analysis of Satisfaction on the Essential Curriculum: Focusing on J University Case (교양필수 교과목에 대한 만족도 분석: J대학 사례를 중심으로)

  • In this study, we examined the satisfaction level of J university's compulsory liberal arts subject with quantitative research. The results quantitative research are as follows. First, men are more interested in creative thinking, college life guidance and career path design than girls. Second, the level of satisfaction with the required liberal arts subject by grade was found to be without a statistical significant difference. Third, the satisfaction level of each line of learning was shown in the order of natural engineering, health and welfare, physical fitness, and humanities. The satisfaction level of the lines of learning was found to vary. Fourth, The satisfaction level of each campus was found to vary. The results of this study could be used as basic data to improve the college liberal arts curriculum, especially the compulsory liberal arts curriculum. Exploring the Design of Artificial Intelligence Convergence Liberal Arts Curriculum Based on Flipped Learning and Maker Education: Focusing on Learner Needs Assessment (플립 러닝과 메이커 교육 기반 인공지능 융합교양교과목 설계 방향 탐색 : 학습자 요구 분석을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the design direction of artificial intelligence convergence liberal arts subjects based on flip learning and maker education through analysis of learner needs in a non-face-to-face classroom environment caused by COVID-19. To this end, we analyzed the priorities of subject content elements by using the Borich needs assessment and The Locus for Focus model along with students' perceptions of flip learning for students who took and did not take maker education-based liberal arts courses. Based on this, it was used as basic data for designing the curriculum. The study results are as follows. First, the content elements of the artificial intelligence liberal arts curriculum based on maker education consisted of a total of 9 areas and were designed as a class using flip learning. Second, the areas with the highest demand for education are 'Artificial Intelligence Theory', 'Artificial Intelligence Programming Practice', 'Physical Computing Theory', 'Physical Computing Practice', followed by 'Convergence Project', '3D Printing Theory', '3D Printing practice' was decided. Third, most of the questionnaires regarding the application of flip learning in maker education-based artificial intelligence liberal arts subjects showed positive responses regardless of whether they took the course, and the satisfaction of the students was very high. Based on this, an artificial intelligence-based convergence liberal arts curriculum using flip learning and maker education was designed. This is meaningful in that it provides an opportunity to cultivate artificial intelligence literacy for college students by preparing the foundation for artificial intelligence convergence education in liberal arts education by reflecting the needs of students.

  • Using and increasing the smart devices got many changes for social environment. Especially, many researchers have studied application using smart devices for improving the learning performance in education. However, Liberal Arts of Humanities has very difficult to apply to information and communication technology cause of traditional study pattern and unit characteristic. In this paper, we suggest a method to apply the Liberal Arts of Humanities to digital broadcasting and to improve learning performance. For this study, we propose a method to making smart contents and connecting them for Liberal Arts of Humanities. And also, we propose a method for applying them to digital broadcasting in order to proof the learning performance increasing by questionary, and shows the application possibility.

  • In the SW education of non-majors who encounter liberal arts education experience difficulties in the SW development environment and understanding they encounter for the first time, relevance to their major, and convergence thinking ability. In order to compensate for the difficulties of non-major learners in liberal arts education, a relatively easily accessible software was used to utilize a demonstration-oriented model that can be applied to beginners in SW education. In order to understand the logical flow of applications and problem solving used in real life, we proposed a convergence SW teaching method that combines repeated implementation through demonstration by the instructor and imitation of the learner, and learning indicators to increase the learning satisfaction and achievement of the learner. In the experiment applying the teaching and learning method proposed in this paper, meaningful results were shown when evaluating the learning effect, academic achievement, learning satisfaction, and teaching and learning method aspects of SW education.

Analysis of the Improvement of Communication Skills through the Operation of Engineering Communication Courses (공학커뮤니케이션 교과목 운영을 통한 의사소통 역량의 향상도 분석)

  • This study was conducted with the aim of exploring ways to more effectively manage related courses by checking the educational effects of the operation of engineering liberal arts courses operated for the development of communication skills of engineering students by detailed factors of communication skills. To achieve the purpose of the study, literature review and survey methodologies were used. A survey was conducted before and after class targeting four class students of the engineering college of D University in Gyeonggi-do. As a result of comparing the results of the pre-test before class through this class and the results of the post-test conducted at the end of the class, it was confirmed that speaking ability, reading ability, and communication ability were improved at a statistically significant level. In addition, as a result of analyzing differences in communication competencies for each individual variable, it was found that there were statistically significant differences according to gender, students' major field, and grade. Based on such research results, several educational proposals were presented to increase the effectiveness of the management of courses operated to develop communication skills.

  • This study suggests the development and the application of cognitive apprenticeship to instructional design for the 'computer and presentation skill' among the liberal arts computer courses in H university. The purpose of this paper is to show effects of instructional design on learning of the liberal arts computer courses employing cognitive apprenticeship, and examine earner's satisfaction of instructional planning, lecture contents, and teaching methods, which are evaluation elements of the content evaluation area. As a result of the study, cognitive apprenticeship theory has improved the satisfaction of the lesson plan, lecture contents and teaching method. Therefore, this study has significance in that it recognizes that cognitive apprentice theory is effective for general computer class. It is expected that it will be applied to effective teaching methods of liberal arts computer related subjects in the future.

Educational Effects of a H-STEAM Group Play Course in College Liberal Arts Curriculum

  • In this paper, we evaluated educational effects of H-STEAM group play contents(a course) and tried to suggest a convergent model for college liberal art curriculum. We opened a mixed course(math, art, engineering, and humanities) with team teaching for this purpose. For the test, we collected data from survey, K-W-L sheet, and reflection paper from 23 students who enrolled in this course. Students should do a team project during the course, propose a new group game, and write K-W-L sheet at the end of each session and reflection paper at the final stage. As a result, it is said that H-STEAM group contents had an effect on students' satisfaction and achievement. During the course, students made academic efforts and were able to construct convergent knowledge from the four fields. From this study, we are sure that H-STEAM contents can play a substitute role for the traditional liberal arts program and innovate the curriculum for the knowledge convergence society.
