  • The successful completion of the present research would be achieved using ground waste glass (GWG) microparticles in self-consolidating concrete (SCC). Here, the influences of GWG microparticles as cementing material on mechanical and durability response properties of SCC are investigated. The aim of this study is to investigate the hardened mechanical properties, percentage of water absorption, free drying shrinkage, unit weight and Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) of binary blended concrete with partial replacement of cement by 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 wt% of GWG microparticles. Besides, slump flow, V-funnel, L-box, J-ring, GTM screen stability, visual stability index (VSI), setting time and air content tests were also performed as workability of fresh concrete indicators. The results show that the workability of fresh concrete was increased by increasing the content of GWG microparticles. The results showed that using GWG microparticles up to maximum replacement of 15 % produces concrete with improved hardened strengths. From the results, when the amount of GWG increased there was a gradual decrease in ASR expansion. Results showed that it is possible to successfully produce SCC with GWG as cementing material in terms of workability, durability and hardened properties.

  • Traditional concrete is effectively an insulator in the dry state. However, conductive concrete can attain relatively high conductivity by adding a certain amount of electronically conductive components in the regular concrete matrix. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the electrical and thermal properties of conductive concrete with various graphite contents, specimen dimensions and applied voltages. For this purpose, six different mixtures (the control mixtures and five conductive mixtures with steel fibers of 2% by weight of coarse aggregate and graphite as fine aggregate replacement at the levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% by weight) were prepared and concrete blocks with two types of dimensions were fabricated. Four test voltage levels, 48 V, 60 V, 110 V, and 220 V, were applied for the electrical and thermal tests. Test results show that the compressive strength of specimens decreases as the amount of graphite increases in concrete. The rising applied voltage decreases electrical resistivity and increases heat of concrete. Meanwhile, higher electrical current and temperature have been obtained in small size specimens than the comparable large size specimens. From the results, it can be concluded that the graphite contents, applied voltage levels, and the specimen dimensions play important roles in electrical and thermal properties of concrete. In addition, the superior electrical and thermal properties have been obtained in the mixture adding 2% steel fibers and 10% graphite.

  • Different parameters potentially affect the properties of corroded reinforced concrete beams. However, the high number of these parameters and their dependence cause that the effectiveness of the parameters could not be simply identified. In this study, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was employed to determine the most influencing parameters on the properties of the corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete beams. 207 ANFIS models were developed to analyze the collected data from 107 reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The impact of 23 input parameters on nine output factors was investigated. The results of the paper showed the order of influence of each input parameter on the outputs and revealed that the input parameters regarding the uncorroded properties of concrete beams are the most influencing factors on the corresponding corroded properties of the beams.

  • Cement kiln dust (CKD) is one of the most important waste materials in the cement industry. The large amount of this material, has encouraged researchers to propose new ways to recycle and reuse it. In this paper, effects of adding cement kiln dust to the ordinary Portland cement, on the physical and mechanical properties of ordinary and lightweight concrete were investigated. Results showed that concrete containing CKD, presents lower workability and modulus of elasticity; however, improvements in strength was observed by adding particular amounts of CKD. Eventually, it was found that adding 10% of cement weight CKD is the appropriate percentage for utilizing in manufacturing ordinary and lightweight concrete.

  • Portland cement pervious concrete has been expected to have good water permeability, mechanical properties and abrasion resistance at the same time when Portland cement pervious concrete is applied to the actual vehicle pavement. In this study, the coarse aggregate and cement were replaced by the fine aggregate and the silica fume to improve actual road performance Portland cement pervious concrete. The Mechanical properties, the water permeability and the abrasion resistance of Portland cement pervious concrete were investigated. The results show that the compressive strength, the flexural strength and the abrasion resistance are increased when the fine aggregate and the silica fume are added to Portland cement pervious concrete separately. However, the porosity and the water permeability are decreased simultaneously. With assistance of silica fume and fine aggregate simultaneously, Portland cement pervious concrete could achieve a higher strength. The compressive strength, the flexural strength and the abrasion resistance of Portland cement pervious concrete mixed with 5% fine aggregates and 8% silica fume are increased by 93.1%, 65% and 65.2%, respectively. The porosity and the water permeability are decreased by 22.4% and 85% when Portland cement pervious concrete is mixed with 5% fine aggregate and 8% silica fume. Therefore, the replacement ratio of the fine aggregates and the silica fume should be considered comprehensively and determined on the premise of ensuring the water permeability coefficient.

  • Concrete is incombustible and has good fire resisting properties, i. e. when exposed to fire it continues to perform satisfactorily for a reasonable period of time. Nevertheless, with time and high temperature gradient, brought about the fire, causes cracking and spatting. Further deterioration and loss of strength are caused by gradual dehydration of concrete paste. This paper is aimed to make a proposal for the design and construction of reinforced concrete structures with more sufficent resistance to fire by the theoritical analysis, which is base4 on investigation of general damages by the fire and change of properties on concrete influenced by high temperature.

  • Effects of polypropylene (PP) fibers, steel fibers (SF) and hybrid on the properties of highstrength fiber reinforced self-consolidating concrete (HSFR-SCC) under different volume contents are investigated in this study. Comprehensive laboratory tests were conducted in order to evaluate both fresh and hardened properties of HSFR-SCC. Test results indicated that the fiber types and fiber contents greatly influenced concrete workability but it is possible to achieve self consolidating properties while adding the fiber types in concrete mixtures. Compressive strength, dynamic modulus of elasticity, and rigidity of concrete were affected by the addition as well as volume fraction of PP fibers. However, the properties of concrete were improved by the incorporation of SF. Splitting tensile and flexural strengths of concrete became increasingly less influenced by the inclusion of PP fibers and increasingly more influenced by the addition of SF. Besides, the inclusion of PP fibers resulted in the better efficiency in the improvement of toughness than SF. Furthermore, the inclusion of fibers did not have significant effect on the durability of the concrete. Results of electrical resistivity, chloride ion penetration and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests confirmed that HSFR-SCC had enough endurance against deterioration, lower chloride ion penetrability and minimum reinforcement corrosion rate.

  • Today, pozzolans are widely used in construction for various reasons such as technical and economic efficiency. In this research, in order to evaluate some of important properties of concrete, silica fume and fly ash have been used as a replacement for cement in different mass percentages. Concrete mixtures were made from a water-cement ratio of (0.45) and cured under similar conditions. The main focus of this study was to evaluate the permeability and mechanical properties of concrete made from binary and ternary cementitious mixtures of fly ash and silica fume. In this study permeability of concrete was studied by evaluating the sorptivity, water absorption, water penetration depth, electrical resistivity and rapid chloride permeability (RCP) tests. Mechanical properties of concrete were evaluated with compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the effects of silica fume and fly ash on the pore structure and morphology of concrete with cement based matrix. The results indicated that the incorporation of silica fume and fly ash increased the mechanical strength and improved the permeability of concrete.

  • Fracture properties of concrete depend on the mix proportions of the ingredients, specimen shape and size, type of testing method used for the evaluation of fracture properties. Aggregates play a key role for changes in the fracture behaviour of concrete as they constitute about 60-75 % of the total volume of the concrete. The present study deals with the effect of size and quantity of coarse aggregate on the fracture behaviour of steel fibre reinforced self compacting concrete (SFRSCC). Lower coarse aggregate and higher fine aggregate content in SCC results in the stronger interfacial transition zone and a weaker stiffness of concrete compared to vibrated concrete. As the fracture properties depend on the aggregates quantity and size particularly in SCC, three nominal sizes (20 mm, 16 mm and 12.5 mm) and three coarse to fine aggregate proportions (50-50, 45-55, 40-60) were chosen as parameters. Wedge Split Test (WST), a stable test method was adopted to arrive the requisite properties. Specimens without and with guide notch were investigated. The results are indicative of increase in fracture energy with increase in coarse aggregate size and quantity. The splitting force was maximum for specimens with 12.5 mm size which is associated with a brittle failure in the pre-ultimate stage followed by a ductile failure due to the presence of steel fibres in the post-peak stage.

  • There are many methods to improve the performance of concrete. Especially, granuated blast furnace slag. by-products used in concrete as the replacement material of cement, could contribute to improve the fluidity, resistance of chemical attack and strength of concrete. Also, it could contribute to decrease the rate of generating hydration heat, in addition to cost-down of concrete and prevention of enviromental pollution. Therefore, in order to establish the systemical application of granuated blast furnace slag in normal concrete, the engineering properties of concrete, such as fluidity, strength, setting and hydration properties etc.. was evaluated. In this study, replacement ratio of granuated blast furnace slag was 0, 30, 50, 70(%), and target slump was 8, 12, 15, 18(cm). Results from the experiment, granuated blast furnace slag showed the outstanding effects of improving the engineering properties of concrete. From now on, positive application of granuated blast furnace slag is expected in the point of improving the performance and cost-down of concrete.
