Detection of Leakage Point via Frequency Analysis of a Pipeline Flow

  • Fast Fourier Transformation is employed to convert the head variation of a pipeline in the time domain to the amplitude of the frequency domain. Applying method of characteristics to a pipeline provides a significant frequency range for a surge introduced from the valve modulation. Inverse Fast Fourier Transformation and a Finite Impulse Response Filter can be used to remove any possible noise existing from the significant frequency range of an unsteady condition. A filtered signal shows higher potential for the inverse calculation of leakage detection than the noise-added signal does. The respective performances of Inverse Fast Fourier Transformation and a Finite Impulse Response Filter are compared in terms of leakage detection capability. Characteristics of the frequency range for multiple leakages were investigated to validate the effectiveness of the noise control method in the frequency domain.

In-Process Measurement of ELID Grinding Status -Thickness of Insulating layer-

  • To successfully establish the ELID-grinding, it is important to properly select the electrolytic condition according to grinding conditions. Currently, the selection of electrolytic condition is mainly dependent on the operators experience, which is one of difficulties preventing the successful application of ELID technique. In this study, an in-process measurement system of the insulating layer using two gap sensors-a capacitance type and an eddy current type-are developed and the change of the thickness of insulating layer during ELID grinding is detected. Evaluation experiments show the possibility to control the electrolytic condition through the in-process measurement of the layer status.

공학교육인증활동을 교수업적평가에 반영하는 방안 (A Study on Including the ABEEK Activities in the Professor Evaluation System)

  • 국내 많은 공학계 대학에서 공학교육인증제가 시행되고 있다. 대부분의 대학이 교육, 연구, 봉사로 나누어 교수업적평가를 시행하고 있고, 승진과 관련하여 전문학술지에 게재한 연구논문 실적이 가장 중요한 평가지표가 되고 있다. 그러나 공학교육인증 관련 활동이 교수업적평가에 반영되지 않고 있어 평가기준과 교육관련 의무 사이에 괴리가 존재한다. 본 논문은 공학교육인증 관련 활동을 교수업적평가에 포함시키는 방안을 모색해 본 것이다. 제시된 5가지 방안 중에서 설문조사결과 정년을 보장받은 정교수급은 책임시수 경감을 선호했고 부 조교수급은 논문게재 실적 경감을 선호하였다. 논리성과 교수들의 선호도를 감안해 보면 공학교육인증제 시행에 참여하는 교수들에게 책임강의 시수 일부를 경감해 주거나 추가 강의실적으로 인정해 주는 등 교육관련 업적으로 평가하는 것이 타당해 보인다. 그러나 오랫동안 공학교육인증제를 시행해 오고 있는 미국의 경우 공학계 교수들에게 특별한 혜택이 부여되지 않고 있는 점을 감안해 보면, 우리나라도 도입과 정착기를 지나면 공학교육인증제 시행에 따른 혜택을 점차 폐지해 나가야 할 것으로 판단된다.

장기현장실습 제도의 성공적인 운영을 IPP 전담교수의 역할 : 한국기술교육대학교 사례를 중심으로 (The Roles of IPP Professor for Successful Operations of IPP System : Based on KOREATECH Case Study)

  • 본 연구에서는 한국기술교육대학교가 최근 현장중심의 실무형 인재 양성을 목표로 혁신적으로 추진하고 기업연계형 장기현장실습 (IPP: Industry Professional Practice) 제도의 효율적이고 체계적인 운영 및 관리를 위해 필요한 IPP 전담교수의 역할에 대해 해외 선진국 운영사례 분석 및 실제 IPP 제도 2년간의 운영 경험을 바탕으로 제안한다. IPP 전담교수의 역할은 크게 3가지로 구분된다. 첫 번째는 IPP 관리자로서의 역할이며, 두 번째는 학생들에 대한 진로지도 상담자의 역할이며, 세 번째는 IPP 교육 프로그램에 대한 교육자로서의 역할이다. IPP 제도 시행 초기에는 주로 IPP 관리자로서의 역할이 중요하지만 IPP 제도가 체계적으로 관리되고 운영되면 IPP 관리자로서의 역할은 점차 줄어들고 진로지도 상담자로서의 역할이 더 중요해진다. IPP 제도가 학점을 부여하는 교육 프로그램인 만큼 IPP 전담교수는 경험학습 설계, 교육목표 달성도 평가 등 교육자로서의 역할도 수행해야 한다.

트랙터용 습지 보조 차륜의 설계(II) -케이지 휠과 토양의 상호 작용- (Design of a Tire-Attachable Cage Wheel for Wetland Use (II) -Soil-cage wheel interaction-)

  • Interactions between cage wheel and soil under the wet paddy field condition were analyzed. The cage wheel as a traction aid to driving tires of tractor was attached to the outside of the tires. The driving torque transmitted only to the cage wheel was measured and its effect on the total driving torque by both the tires and cage wheel was analyzed. Mathematical models were developed to predict the soil thrusts y a single lug and by the cage wheel with many lugs, respectively. Experimental results showed that as the diameter of cage wheel increased, positive effects of the cage wheel on the traction also increased. About 33-40% of the total traction force was obtained by the cage wheel with a diameter 1,182mm and 49-55% with a diameter 1,222mm. The peak thrust of the single lug of cage wheel increased by 31% and 59%, respectively when the diameter of the cage wheel increased from 1,182mm to 1,222mm and 1,262mm. The thrust by the cage wheel was estimated by using the developed mathematical models and the results were proved that the models are reliable for the estimation of the traction by the cage wheels.

Entrepreneur in Academic Research: Interview with Professor Kwang-Hyung Lee

  • This is an interview with Professor Kwang-Hyung Lee, founding Dean of KAIST Moon Soul Graduates School of Future Strategy and founder of the Department of Bio and Brain Engineering of the same university casting two questions about academics. The first question is what pattern is desirable in the evolution of research topics of an academics. While traditional researchers in science and engineering tend to focus on one subject in ever greater depth over time, Professor Lee's research agenda has spanned several new topics by gradually changing the content of the study: from artificial intelligence to bio and brain research, and to creativity development method, further to future study. The second question is about researchers' social responsibility. He has devoted to contributes to industry fields and the nation through academic activities as well as educating several successful business people, founding a new academic department and graduate school of future studies.
