To secure basic data for intake port design, effects of a port masking on the part load performance were investigated in a 4 valve SI engine. For this purpose, 9 kinds of masking, which have different shapes and masking ratio, are applied to the engine intake system. The characteristics of the performance were estimated through mixture response test at various engine load and speed. The results show that NOx emission, one of indexes for stratification, increases considerably in spite of retarded spark timing due to the stratification which is caused by unequal flow distribution between the two intake ports. The mechanism of stratification by masking is different from axial stratification and the fuel entering through masked port plays a very important role in this stratification process. In conclusion, the port masking method could be easily applied to engine intake system and be very effective for inducing the stratified charging without the change of port design.

As a new concept in engines and a power source for future automotive applications, the HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engine has been introduced. Essentially a combination of spark ignition and compression ignition engines, the HCCI engine exhibits low NO$_x$ and PM emissions as well as high efficiency under part load. In this research, a 4 cylinder diesel engine was converted into a HCCI engine, and propane was used as the fuel. The main parameters for this research are fuel flow rate and the temperature of the intake manifold, and the effects of such on a HCCI engine's performance and exhaust was investigated.
This study aims at evaluation of component performance of a commercial micro gas turbine by detailed measurements of various system parameters. A test facility to measure performance of a micro gas turbine was set up. Performance parameters such as turbine exit temperature, exhaust gas temperature, engine inlet temperature, compressor discharge pressure and fuel flow rate were measured. Variations in measured data and estimated performance parameters were analyzed. In addition to overall engine performance, component characteristic parameters including the turbine inlet temperature, the compressor efficiency, the turbine efficiency, the recuperator effectiveness were estimated. Behaviors of the estimated characteristic parameters with operating condition change were examined.

The gasoline direct injection (GDI) system is considerably spreading in automotive market due to its advantages. Nevertheless, since GDI system emit higher particle matter (PM) due to its combustion characteristics, it is difficult to meet strengthened emission regulation in near future. For this reason, a combined GDI with MPI system, so-called, dual injection (DUI) system is being investigated as a supplemental measure for the GDI system. This paper focused on power and fuel consumption effect by injection mode strategy of DUI system in part load and idle engine operating condition. In this study, port fuel injectors are installed on 2.4 liters GDI production engine in order to realize DUI system. And, at each injection mode, DOE (design of experiment) method is used to optimize engine control parameters such as dual injection ratio, start of injection timing, end of injection timing, CAM position and so on. As a consequence, DUI mode shows slightly better or equivalent fuel efficiency compared to conventional GDI engine on 9 points fuel economy mode as well as MPI mode shows less fuel consumption than GDI mode during idle operation. Furthermore, DUI system shows improvement potential of maximum 2.0% fuel consumption and 1.1% performance compared to GDI system in WOT operating condition.

An experimental study on engine performance and emission characteristics for bio-alcohol fuels considered as RFS fuel. The Bio-alcohol fuel were mixed ethanol and butanol and used in a 1.8 liter mpi engine. The efficiency of the BSFC is excellent in the maximum torque operation condition and the part load operation condition. As the bio-alcohol mixing ratio increased, the lambda <1 and ignition timing advanced $5^{\circ}CA$. As the mixing concentration increased, NOx emission increase and $CO_2$ emission decreased.

An analytical study based on physical understandings and aero-thermodynamic theories was conducted to observe the performance characteristics and to derive the essential design parameters of dual ramjet(dual-combustion/dual-mode) propulsion for wide Mach number. The performances and operating limitations of the engines with two types combustors, such as constant pressure- and constant area- combustor, over various flight Mach numbers was investigated. Finally, the transition Mach number from ramjet to scramjet was carried out to optimize performance load balancing of ramjet and scramjet.
This study aims to analyze operating performance of a micro gas turbine with the aid of detailed measurements of various system parameters. In addition to embedded measurements, parameters such as exhaust temperatures, engine inlet temperatures and fuel flow rates are measured. Variations in measured data and estimated performance parameters are analyzed. Those data are processed to calculate losses along the power transmission line and the net gas turbine performance (power and efficiency based on the gas turbine shaft end) is isolated from the overall system performance. A method to estimate characteristic parameters such as component efficiencies, based on the comparison between measured and predicted performance data, is suggested and exemplified for the full load condition.

This study is mainly focused on the assessment of return, semi return, and returnless fuel supply system for an LPi engine. In order to compare the return type with returnless one with various LPG blends, combustion analysis and cyclic THC emission characteristic were tested at the part load operating condition of the LPi engine. Considering heat balance of each fuel supply systems, pressure and temperature increment of return type showed lower at the fuel rail during idle warm up operation. However, those of returnless type at LPG tank maintained stable and slow increment because the heat transfer from the LPi engine was minimized. Finally, hot restartability of each fuel supply systems were evaluated with the various LPG blends and fuel temperatures. As a result, semi return type has equivalent performance to return type considering combustion and emission characteristic, hot restartability performance for LPi engine.

A method to simulate the gas turbine transient behavior is developed. The basic principles of the method and main input data required are described. Calculation results are presented in terms of whole operating regime of the engine. The influence of initial parameters such as starting engine power, moment of inertia of the rotor, fuel schedule on performance characteristics of gas turbine during transient operation is shown. In addition, the effect of bleeding air on transient behavior is also considered. For validation of the developed computer code, a comparative analysis with experimental data obtained from a heavy duty gas turbine is made. Calculation results agree well with the experimental data for the range of operating regime studied and proved applicability of the developed technique to initial design stage of control system.
Present paper describes on/off design performance of a 50KW turbogenerator gas turbine engine for hybrid vehicle application. For optimum design point selection, relevant parameter study is carried out. The turbogenerator gas turbine engine for a hybrid vehicle is expected to be designed for maximum fuel economy, ultra low emissions, and very low cost. Compressor, combustor, turbine, and permanent-magnet generator will be mounted on a single high speed (82,000 rpm) shaft that will be supported on air bearings. As the generator is built into the shaft, gearbox and other moving parts become unnecessary and thus will increase the system's reliability and reduce the manufacturing cost. The engine has a radial compressor and turbine with design point pressure ratio of 4.0. This pressure ratio was set based on calculation of specific fuel consumption and specific power variation with pressure ratio. For the given turbine inlet temperature, a rather conservative value of $1100^\circK$ was selected. Designed mass flow rate was 0.5 kg/sec. Parametric study of the cycle indicates that specific work and efficiency increase at a given pressure ratio and turbine inlet temperature. Off design analysis shows that the gas turbine system reaches self operating condition at N/$N_{DP}$ = 0.53. Bleeding air for turbine stator cooling is omitted considering low TIT and for a simple geometric structure. Various engine performance simulations including, ambient temperature influence, surging at part load condition. Transient analysis were performed to secure the optimum engine operating characteristics. Surge margin throughout the performance analysis were maintained to be over 80% approximately. Validation of present results are yet to be seen as the performance tests are scheduled by the end of 1998 for comparison.
