  • This experimental study was carried out to obtain both low emissions and high thermal efficiency by rapid bulk combustion. Two kinds of experiments were conducted to obtain fundamental data on the operation of a RI engine by a radical ignition method. First, the basic experiments were conducted to confirm rapid bulk combustion by using a radical ignition method in a constant volume chamber (CVC). In this experiment, the combustion velocity was much higher than that of a conventional method. Next, to investigate the desirable condition of engine operation using radical ignition, an applied experiment was conducted in an actual engine based on the basic experiment results obtained from CVC condition. A sub-chamber-type diesel engine was reconstructed using a SPI type engine with controlled injection duration and spark timing, and finally, converted to a RI engine. In this study, the operation characteristics of the RI engine were examined according to the sub-chamber's specifications such as the sub-chamber volume and the diameter and number of passage holes. These experimental results showed that the RI engine operated successfully and was affected by the ratio of the passage hole area to the sub-chamber volume.

  • The emergency AC power supply system of the nuclear power plant is designed to supply the power to the nuclear power plant at the emergency operating condition. The safety function of the diesel generator at the nuclear power plant is to supply AC electric power to the safety system whenever the preferred AC power supply is unavailable. The reliable operation of onsite standby diesel generator should be ensured by a condition monitoring system designed to maintain, monitor and forecast the reliability level of diesel generator. The purpose of this paper is to improve the existing ultrasonic sensor used for condition diagnosis of engine fuel pump and cylinder head for the accurate diagnosis in actual engine condition of emergency diesel generator(EDG). As a result of this study, we could design and develop much more reliable ultrasonic sensor than existing ones.

  • Fuel reforming technology for the fuel cell vehicles could be adopted to internal combustion engine for the reduction of engine out emissions. Since syngas which is reformed from fossil fuel has hydrogen as a major component, it has abilities to enhance the combustion characteristics with wide flammability and high speed flame propagation. In this paper, syngas was feed to 2.0 liter gasoline engine during the cold start and early state of idle condition. Not only cold start HC emission but also $NO_x$ emission could be dramatically reduced due to the fact that syngas has no HC and has nitrogen up to 50% as components. Exhaust gas temperature was lower than that of gasoline feeding condition. Delayed ignition timing, however, resulted in increased exhaust gas temperature approximated to gasoline condition. It is supposed that the usage of syngas in the gasoline internal combustion engine is an effective solution to meet the future strict emission regulations by the reduction of cold start THC and $NO_x$ emissions.

  • A CNG dedicated engine one of the types in natural gas engine is assessed as the most effective mechanism for the reduction of exhaust emissions. This work described the measuring results of a CNG dedicated engine by the experiment, In this study the characteristics of the CNG engine was investigated and then measured exhaust gas by engine performance mode at maximum load condition with increasing the engine speed in the range of 1,000-2,200rpm. The exhaust emission was also measured at D-13 mode as well as AVL-8 mode.

  • An analysis program of specific impulse has been developed for a gas generator cycle rocket engine. The program has been verified by comparing the published performance data of the same cycle engine with RP-1 as fuel. A model for pressure drop of regenerative cooling and film cooling mass flow rate has been suggested to satisfy the necessary cooling condition with Jet-A1 as fuel. The engine mixture ratio is defined by the film cooling mass flow rate and the core mixture ratio. The optimal condition of the combustor pressure and engine mixture ratio has been found for maximum specific impulse.

  • The purpose of resilient mounting for marine engine is to prevent noise and ship damages caused by engine vibration. Although many researches for the resilient mounting system have been carried out, these results have limit to apply on the marine engine systems. Because marine engine generally have low speed operating range and have to consider misfiring condition. In this paper, we studied the effect of engine's misfiring on the resilient mounting systems. And the influences of design parameters, such as dynamic characteristics and location angles of resilient rubber mountings, were also examined on the single and double resilient mounting systems.

  • For the purpose of improving performances of a turbocharged diesel engine at low speed, this study investigates the effects of the injected air for the performances and flow characteristics in the intake and exhaust pipes by using the computer simulation with test bed. In the theoretical analysis, the whole flow system, including engine cylinders and intake and exhaust pipes, is calculated numerically by the method of filling and emptying. From the results of this study, the following conclusions may be summarized. Increasing injected air pressure into the pipe of compressor exit brings about the improvement in a performance and flow characteristics of intake and exhaust pipes under full load operating conditions at 1000 rpm of the engine speed, but shows trends of the inferior performances under no load operating conditions at 2000 rpm of the engine speed.

  • This paper presents the performance and emissions characteristics of a small spark-ignited gasoline engine. The engine used in this paper is a single cylinder, diaphragm carburetor, two-stroke, air-cooled 26cc SI engine for brush cutter. For the performance of the engine, RPM, torque, and fuel consumption were measured and HC, CO, and NOx measured for the emissions according to the change of the dynamometer load at wide open throttle (WOT) position. The results showed that the excess air ratio decreased and torque increased with increasing loads, the torque and brake specific fuel consumption were the optimum driving condition at the 7000 rpm, HC and CO emissions increased with increasing loads and with an decrease in excess air ratio over 7000 rpm.

  • A newly designed combustion chamber of diesel engine with a modified piston crown was prepared for the purpose of investigation for reduction of NO emission. It was intended to realize 2-stage combustion that is to keep fuel rich condition during early stage of combustion and fuel lean condition during next stage. The engine was tested on various conditions concerning exhaust gas emissions especially about NO emission and simultaneously fuel consumption rate. It was found that the engine with 2-stage combustion type piston emits significantly low NO at various speed and torque compared with conventional engines, but it raised points at issue in CO and smoke emissions with fuel consumption rate. The increasing of injection pressure on 2 stage combustion type diesel engine affects on CO and smoke emission considerably to reduce but slightly on NO to increase. The effect of 2-stage combustion was better at low speed than at high speed.

  • Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is the best concept able to provide low NOx and PM in diesel engine emissions. This new alternative combustion process is mainly controlled by chemical kinetics in comparison with the conventional combustion in internal combustion engine. However, HCCI engine's operation have an excessive rate of pressure rising during the combustion process. In this study, stratification condition of EGR exhaust gases was used to reduce the pressure rising during the combustion process in HCCI engine. Also, combustion characteristics and emissions characteristics were investigated using the detailed diesel surrogate reaction mechanism.
