Radiation Grafting of Hydrophilic Monomers onto Polyester

  • Radiation grafting of acrylic acid and 4-vinylpyridine at room temperature has been studied by an impregnation method to improve the hygroscopic properties, the antistatic behavior and the dyeability of polyester fabric. Polyester fabric was impregnated with acrylic acid or aqueous emulsion of acrylic acid-4-vinylpyridine by immersion at 25$^{\circ}$or 7$0^{\circ}C$. The impregnated fabric was irradiated under nitrogen gas with ${\gamma}$-rays from Co-60. When acrylic acid grafted polyester fabric was treated with sodium carbonate, calcium acetate and potassium persulfate, tne rate of water absorption was increased and most parts of polyacrylic acid formed were extracted off from the fabric with 0.1% solution of sodium hydroxide at 10$0^{\circ}C$. In the case of the impregnation of a mixture of acrylic acid and 4-vinylpyridine the petcent of grafting has been shown to be proportional to the ratio of 4-VP/AA and radiation dost. Estimating by contact angle measurements of water on the various polymer surfaces, the antistatic behavior was decreased with the increase of grafting percent. The investigation of electron micrograph disclosed the existence of certain type of discontinuities in the acrylic acid grafted polyester fiber which was treated with various salts.

Parallelizing 3D Frequency-domain Acoustic Wave Propagation Modeling using a Xeon Phi Coprocessor (제온 파이 보조 프로세서를 이용한 3차원 주파수 영역 음향파 파동 전파 모델링 병렬화)

  • 3D seismic data processing methods such as full waveform inversion or reverse-time migration require 3D wave propagation modeling and heavy calculations. We compared efficiency and accuracy of a Xeon Phi coprocessor to those of a high-end server CPU using 3D frequency-domain wave propagation modeling. We adopted the OpenMP parallel programming to the time-domain finite difference algorithm by considering the characteristics of the Xeon Phi coprocessors. We applied the Fourier transform using a running-integration to obtain the frequency-domain wavefield. A numerical test on frequency-domain wavefield modeling was performed using the 3D SEG/EAGE salt velocity model. Consequently, we could obtain an accurate frequency-domain wavefield and attain a 1.44x speedup using the Xeon Phi coprocessor compared to the CPU.

Effect of Reductive Salts on Dissolution of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ in Acidic Solutions (산성용액 내에서${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$의 용해에 대한 환원성 염의 효과)

  • Effect of metallic salts added to the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3-HCl\;or\;{\alpha}-Fe_2O_3-H_2SO_4$ reaction systems were investigated by colorimetric and gravimetric determinations. While reductive salts exhibited remarkably enhanced reaction rate, non-reductive salts showed inhibitive results. We supposed that the improvement of dissolution rate of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ by the addition of $FeCl_2$, a reductive salt, to the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3-HCl$ system can be attributed to the formation of chloro-bridge between $Fe^{3+}\;and\; Fe^{2+}$, and therefore some partial electronic charge transfer from $Fe^{2+}\;to\;Fe^{3+}$ on the surface of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ will be easily achieved through the bridged bond. The transferred charge to the surface will reduce the positive charge of initial $Fe^{3+}$, and also result to reduce the lattice energy of that site. Assuming tothat there is a linear relationship between the lattice energy change and the change of activation energy of the reaction system, the transferred partial electronic charge to $Fe^{3+}$ of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ surface was calculated to be ca. 0.36e.

High Temperature Stability of Nitride Ceramic Materials in LiF-NdF3-Nd2O3 Molten Salts System (LiF-NdF3-Nd2O3 용융염에서 질화물계 세라믹재료의 고온안정성)

  • Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets have been used in a wide variety of applications because of their high magnetic flux density. So, demand for neodymium has been increasing in worldwide. In this study, an electrowinning process was performed in $LiF-NdF_3-Nd_2O_3$ high temperature molten salts. However, a corrosion resistant material for use in the molten salt must be found for stable operation because of the harsh corrosion environment of the electrowinning process. Therefore, for this paper, boron nitride(BN), aluminum nitride(AlN), and silicon nitride($Si_3N_4$) were selected as protective and structural materials in the high temperature electrolyte. To investigate the characteristics of BN, AlN, and $Si_3N_4$, in molten salts, materials were immersed in the molten salts for 24, 72, 120, and 192 hours. Also, surface condition and stability were investigated by SEM and EDS and corrosion products were calculated by HSC chemistry. As a result, among BN, AlN, and $Si_3N_4$, AlN was found to show the best protective material properties.

  • Analysis of foreign and domestic patents for pyroprocessing technology of spent nuclear fuels was carried out in this study. The current status of pyroprocessing technology development in such countries as Korea, USA, Japan and EU was analyzed by classifying the patents for 1975 through 2009 according to registration country, assignee, calendar year and technology area. The major assignees' activity indices were compared in order to find out whether there is any concentrated area of technical details. Technology competitiveness of the countries was also investigated from the information of patent citation number and family size. Furthermore, some essential unit technologies required for the commercialization of pyroprocessing were derived and examined in the aspect of the state of art as well as the trend of technology development.

Removal of Non-volatile Contaminant from Aquifer using Surfactant-enhanced Ozone Sparging (오존과 계면활성제를 이용한 대수층 내 비휘발성 물질 제거)

  • Surfactant-enhanced ozone sparging (SEOS), an advanced version of SEAS (surfactant-enhance air sparging) was introduced in this study for the first time for removal of non-volatile contaminant from aquifer. The advantages of implementing SEAS, enhanced air saturation and expanded zone of sparging influence, are combined with the oxidative potential of ozone gas. Experiments conducted in this study were tow fold; 1-dimensional column experiments for the changes in the gas saturation and contaminant removal during sparging, and 2-dimensional box model experiment for the changes in the size of zone of influence and contaminant removal. An anionic surfactant (SDBS, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate) was used to control surface tension of water. Fluorescein sodium salt was used as a representative of watersoluble contaminants, for its fluorescence which is easy to detect when it disappears due to oxidative degradation. Three different gases (air, high-concentration ozone gas, and low-concentration ozone gas) were used for the sparging of 1-D column experiment, while two gases (air and low-concentration ozone gas) were used for 2-D box model experiment. When SEOS was performed for the column and box model, the air saturation and the zone of influence were improved significantly compared to air sparging without surface tension suppression, resulted in effective removal of the contaminant. Based on the experiments observations conducted in this study, SEOS was found to maintain the advantages of SEAS with further capability of oxidative degradation of non-volatile contaminants.

Effect of Neutral Salts on the Reactive Dyeing of Silk (Ⅱ) - Effect of Anions - (중성염이 견의 반응염색에 미치는 영향 (Ⅱ) - 음이온의 영향 -)

  • Four kinds of neutral sodium salts with different anions, NaF, NaCl, NaBr, and NaI, were added to the dye bath to accurately understand the effect of anions on the reactive dyeing of silk with C. I. Reactive Black 5. The sodium cation lowered the negative surface potential of the silk and increased the dye-uptake on fille fabric as reported previously. However, because of the discrepancy in the anions′inhibition power from cation′s lowering the surface negative potential the amount of the dye on the silk fiber was different from each other in the order of $F^-\;>\;Cl^-\;>\; Br^-\;>\;I^-$. The activation energy($E_a$) for the dyeing was in the order of $F^-\;>\;Cl^-\;>\; Br^-\;>\;I^-$ but the dye-uptake on the fabric and the activation free energy(Δ$G^*$), the real energy barrier for the reaction, were in the order of $F^-\;>\;Cl^-\;>\; Br^-\;>\;I^-$ because the strength of the interaction of the anions with sodium cations was the same as the order of the latter. In other words $F^-$ exerted the weakest electrostatic force on $Na^+$and competed with the dyestuff anions least of all. The decrease in Δ$S^*$may be due to the looesly bonded activated complex of dyestuff anions, sodium cations and fiber molecules at transition state. It was clarified from the Bronsted equation that sodium salts with different anions also had fille ionic strength effect and the specific salt effect on the reactive dyeing.

Three-dimensional Wave Propagation Modeling using OpenACC and GPU (OpenACC와 GPU를 이용한 3차원 파동 전파 모델링)

  • We calculated 3D frequency- and Laplace-domain wavefields using time-domain modeling and Fourier transform or Laplace transform. We adopted OpenACC and GPU for an efficient parallel calculation. The OpenACC makes it easy to use GPU accelerators by adding directives in conventional C, C++, and Fortran programming languages. Accordingly, one doesn't have to learn new GPGPU programming languages such as CUDA or OpenCL to use GPU. An OpenACC program allocates GPU memory, transfers data between the host CPU and GPU devices and performs GPU operations automatically or following user-defined directives. We compared performance of 3D wave propagation modeling programs using OpenACC and GPU to that using single-core CPU through numerical tests. Results using a homogeneous model and the SEG/EAGE salt model show that the OpenACC programs are approximately 53 and 30 times faster than those using single-core CPU.

Frequency-domain Waveform Inversion using Residual-selection Strategy (잔여 파동장 분리 기법을 이용한 주파수영역 파형역산)

  • We perform the frequency-domain waveform inversion based on the residual-selection strategy. In the residual-selection strategy, we classify time-domain residual wavefields into several groups according to the order of absolute amplitudes. Because the residual wavefields are normalized after regularization of the gradient directions within each group, the residual-selection strategy plays a role in enhancing the small-amplitude wavefields, which contributes to improving the deep parts of inverted subsurface images. After classifying residuals in the time domain, they are transformed to the frequency domain. Waveform inversion is performed in the frequency domain using the back-propagation technique which has been popularly used in reverse-time migration. The residual-selection strategy is applied to the SEG/EAGE salt and IFP Marmousi models. Numerical results show that the residual-selection strategy yields better results than the conventional frequency-domain waveform inversion.

A Survey on the Electric Power Consumptions of Apartments located at Coastal Area : Yeongdo-gu, Busan, Korea (연안지역 아파트의 전력소비량 실태조사 - 부산광역시 영도구에 대한 사례연구 -)

  • Because of the heat island phenomenon and sea wind, there can be thermal conditions' differences around buildings at downtown and coastal area respectively in coastal city, like Busan, Incheon, Mokpo. For the final purpose of the buildings' energy saving design and operation considering of above mentioned environments differences, energy consumption including heating and cooling loads, electric loads are necessary to be accumulated and analyzed in as the database. As a part of this concept, this study aims to survey and analyze each loads of 22 apartments which has at least 100 households respectively and is located at Yeongdo island, Busan, Korea It is cleared that despite the residents living in this district can use sea wind as a natural ventilation and/or cooling methods, they mainly depends on the electric-driven air-conditioners for cooling with window-closed because of anti-salt problems of the sea wind. This leads the maximum power consumption of the surveyed-22-apartments to be appeared in August like that of inland buildings.
