  • For the development of $^{99m}Tc-labelled$ antimony sulfide colloid and hydroxyethyl starch, various experiments such as preparation of colloid, control of the distribution of particle size, establishment of labelling conditions, determination of labelling yield and radiochemical purity, examination of stability, and organ imagings of rabbits etc. were carried out. 1) Antimony sulfide colloid was readily prepared by the reaction of aqueous solution of antimony potassium tartrate with hydrogen sulfide generated by treating ferrous sulfide with dilute sulfuric acid. The colloid could be stabilized by adding small amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone. 2) Electron microscopy analysis exhibited the distribution of colloid size in the range of $1\sim15nm$ with a major portion of 9 m. The colloid solution was sterilized by membrane filtration $(0.2{\mu}m)$ and then stored at $4^{\circ}C$. This sterilized colloid was so stable that it was usable at least for one year. 3) The antimony sulfide colloid was labelled by adding sodium $pertechnetate-^{99m}Tc$ solution to the reaction vial, followed by adding hydrochloric acid and then boiled for 30 min. The optimal pH of the reaction mixture was found to be in the range of $1.3\sim1.4$. Instant thin layer chromatography (ITLC) analysis showed high labelling yield of above 99.5%. This labelled colloid maintained high radio-chemical purity of above 99% until 10 hours after labelling. 4) Animal studies showed high uptake of $^{99m}Tc-Sb_2S_3$ colloid at lymph vessels and nodes indicating a suitable agent for lymphoscintigraphy. Satisfactory results were also abtained in other clinical studies. 5) Hydroxyethyl starch (HES $0.6\sim1.0%$) was labelled with $Na^{99m}TcO_4$ in the presence of $SnCl_2$ with high labelling yield of above 99.5%. The optimal pH of the reaction mixture was in the range of $1.8\sim2.0$. $^{99m}Tc-HES$ maintained high radiochemical purity of above 99% until 10 hours after labelling. 6) Animal studies showed that $^{99m}Tc-HES$ migrated more rapidly from the injection sites into the lymph vessels than $^{99m}Tc-Sb_2S_3$ colloid while less amount of the former was uptaken at lymph nodes than that of the latter. Similar phenomenon was also observed in other clinical studies. As a result, $^{99m}Tc-Sb_2S_3$ colloid was found to be more effective lymphoscintigraphic agent than $^{99m}Tc-HES$.

  • In this study, the effects of MTBE contents as oxygenates in gasoline on exhaust emissions and fuel economy in MPI and GDi vehicles have been investigated. Various oxygen contents have been selected such as 0, 1.0, 2.3 and 2.7 wt%. FTP-75 and HWFET modes as fuel economy test methods which are widely used in Republic of Korea and US were applied to investigate exhaust emissions from the test vehicles. Emissions of CO, NMHC and NOx did not show significant correlation with oxygen contents in gasoline fuels, although having slight difference with these contents. In addition, CO2 emissions were not significantly changed with respect to oxygen content. But in case of warm-up and FTP-75 and HWFET modes including high speed regimes, CO2 emissions showed inverse correlation with oxygen contents. Particulate number concentration was inversely proportional to the oxygen contents, having the minimum value at the condition of 2.3 wt%. In case of fuel economy through carbon balance method, the highest value has been obtained at 2.3 wt% and there was positive correlation with oxygen contents and fuel economy.

  • Numerical simulations of CIEMAT column test in Spain are performed to investigate the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behavior of MX80 bentonite pellets using TOUGH2-FLAC3D. The heater power and injection pressure of water in the numerical simulations are identical to those in the laboratory test. To investigate the applicability of the thermo-hydraulic (TH) model used in TOUGH2 code to prediction of the coupled TH behavior, the simulation results are compared with the observations of temperature and relative humidity with time. The tendencies of the coupled behavior observed in the test are well represented by the numerical models and the simulator in terms of temperature and relative humidity evolutions. Moreover, the performance of the models for the reproduction and prediction of the coupled TH behavior is globally satisfactory compared with the observations. However, the calculated stress change is relatively small and slow due to the limitations of the simple elastic and swelling pressure model used in numerical simulations. It seems that the two models are insufficient to realistically reproduce the complex coupled THM behavior in the bentonite pellets.

  • The Ulchin 3&4, which are 2825 MWt PWRs, adopted Safety Depressurization System (SDS) to mitigate the beyond design basis event of Total Less of Feedwater(TLOFW). In this study the results and methodology of the analyses for the determination of SDS bleed capacity are discussed. The SDS design bleed capacity has been determined from the CEFLASH-4AS/REM simulation according to the following design criteria : 1) Each SDS flow path, in conjunction with one of two High Pressure Safety Injection (HPSI) pumps, is designed to have a sufficient capacity to prevent core uncovery if one SDS path is opened simultaneously with the opening of the Pressurizer Safety Valves (PSVs). 2) Both SDS bleed paths are designed to have sufficient total capacity with both HPSI pumps operating to prevent core uncovery if the Feed and Bleed (F&B) initiation is delayed up to thirty minutes from the time of the PSVs lift. To verify the results of CEFLASH-4AS/REM simulation a comparative analysis kas also been per-formed by more sophisticated computer code, RELAP5/MOD3. The TLOFW event without operator recovery and TLOFW event with F&B are analyzed. The predictions by the CEFLASH-4AS/REM of the transient too phase system behavior are in good qualitative and quantitative agreement with those by the RELAP5/MOD3 simulation. Both of the results of analyses by CEFLASH-4AS/REM and RELAP5/MOD3 have demonstrated that decay heat removal and core inventory make-up can be successfully accomplished by F&B operation during now event for the Ulchin 3&4.

  • In this paper, we applied coupled non-isothermal, multiphase fluid flow and geomechanical numerical modeling using TOUGH-FLAC coupled analysis to study the complex thermodynamic and geomechanical performance of underground lined rock caverns (LRC) for compressed air energy storage (CAES). Mechanical stress in concrete linings as well as pressure and temperature within a storage cavern were examined during initial and long-term operation of the storage cavern for CAES. Our geomechanical analysis showed that effective stresses could decrease due to air penetration pressure, and tangential tensile stress could develop in the linings as a result of the air pressure exerted on the inner surface of the lining, which would result in tensile fracturing. According to the simulation in which the tensile tangential stresses resulted in radial cracks, increment of linings' permeability and air leakage though the linings, tensile fracturing occurred at the top and at the side wall of the cavern, and the permeability could increase to $5.0{\times}10^{-13}m^2$ from initially prescribed $10{\times}10^{-20}m^2$. However, this air leakage was minor (about 0.02% of the daily air injection rate) and did not significantly impact the overall storage pressure that was kept constant thanks to sufficiently air tight surrounding rocks, which supports the validity of the concrete-lined underground caverns for CAES.

  • Cases of TBM tunnelling have been consistently increasing worldwide. In many recent subsea and urban tunnelling projects, TBM excavation has been preferably considered due to its advantages over drill and blast tunnelling. Difficult ground conditions are highly probable to appear in subsea and urban tunnels because of the shallow working depth and alluvial characteristics. Under the difficult ground conditions, ground reinforcement measures should be considered including grouting, while it is of great importance to select the optimal grout material and injection method to cope with the ground condition. The benefits from TBM excavation, such as fast excavation, increased safety, and reduced environmental impact, can be achieved by applying appropriate ground reinforcement with the minimum overrun of cost and time. In this report, various grouting methods were reviewed so that they can be applied in difficult ground conditions. In addition, domestic and international cases of successful ground reinforcement for difficult grounds were introduced for future reference.

  • The composition of the reduced fuel produced in the electrolytic reduction process of pyroprocessing affects the concentration change of $UCl_3$, an important operating variable of the electrorefining process. In this study, we examined the concentration change of $UCl_3$ in the electrorefiner according to the content of TRU and RE elements in the reduced fuel and the concentration of $Li_2O$ introduced in the electrorefiner accompanied with the reduced fuel. Considering only the TRU and RE elements, the concentration of $UCl_3$ decreased with increasing the number of electrorefining operation batch. In order to operate one campaign (20 batches) of electrorefining process, it was found that additional injection of $UCl_3$ should be conducted more than 3 times. On the other hand, the concentration of $UCl_3$ in the electrorefiner changed significantly depending on the concentration of $Li_2O$ and, accordingly the number of operable electrorefining batches decreased rapidly, showing that the concentration of $Li_2O$ is an important operating variable in electrorefining. Therefore, the results of this study show that to maintain the concentration of $UCl_3$ in the electrorefiner, the operation mode should be set by taking into account the effect of $Li_2O$ as well as the TRU and RE elements contained in the reduced fuel.

  • In the engineering barriers of high-level radioactive waste disposal, gases could be generated through a number of processes. If the gas production rate exceeds the gas diffusion rate, the pressure of the gas increases and gases could migrate through the bentonite buffer. Because people and the environment can be exposed to radioactivity, it is very important to clarify gas migration in terms of long-term integrity of the engineered barrier system. In particular, it is necessary to identify the hydro-mechanical mechanism for the dilation flow, which is a very important gas flow phenomenon only in medium containing large amounts of clay materials such as bentonite buffer, and to develop and validate new numerical approach for the quantitative evaluation of the gas migration phenomenon. Therefore, in this study, we developed a two-phase flow model considering the mechanical damage model in order to simulate the gas migration in the engineered barrier system, and validated with 1D gas flow modelling through saturated bentonite under constant volume boundary conditions. As a result of numerical analysis, the rapid increase in pore water pressure, stress, and gas outflow could be simulated when the dilation flow was occurred.

  • CCU (Carbon Capture & Utilization) has a potential technology for the reduction and usage of carbon dioxide which is greenhouse gas emitting from a fossil fuel buring. To decompose the carbon dioxide, a three phase gliding arc plasma-catalytic reactor was designed and manufactured. Experiments of carbon dioxide reduction was performed by varying the gas flow rate with feeding the $CO_2$ only as well as the input power, the catalyst type and steam supply with respect to the injection of the mixture of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$. The $CO_2$ decomposition rate was 7.9% and the energy efficiency was $0.0013L/min{\cdot}W$ at a $CO_2$ flow rate of 12 L/min only. Carbon monoxide and oxygen was generated in accordance with the destruction of carbon dioxide. When the injection ratio of $CH_4/CO_2$ reached 1.29, the $CO_2$ destruction and $CH_4$ conversion rates were 37.8% and 56.6% respectively at a power supply of 0.76 kW. During the installation of $NiO/Al_2O_3$ catalyst bed, the $CO_2$ destruction and $CH_4$ conversion rates were 11.5% and 9.9% respectively. The steam supply parameter do not have any significant effects on the carbon dioxide decomposition.

  • This paper presents a case study of an enhanced geothermal system(EGS) demonstration project conducted in $Gro{\ss}$ $Sch{\ddot{o}}nebeck$, Northerm Germany, focusing on hydraulic stimulation. The project was conducted with doublet system in sandstone and volcanic formations at 4 - 4.4 km depth. Under normal faulting to strike-slip faulting stress regime, hydraulic stimulations were conducted at injection and production wells by massive waterfrac and gel-proppant fracturing. Injectivity index increased from $0.97m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ to $7.5m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ and productivity index increased from $2.4m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ to $10.1m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ by a series of hydraulic stimulations at both wells. After circulation tests through injection and production wells, however, productivity index decreased from $8.9m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ to $0.6m^3/(hr^*MPa)$ in two years. Slip tendency analysis for the stimulation in volcanic layer estimated the required pressure for shear slip and its preferred orientations and it showed reasonable match with actual stimulation results. Through the microseismicity observation for the stimulation of volcanic formation, only 80 seismic events with its moment magnitudes in -1.8<$M_W$<-1.0 were observed, which are unexpectedly low for EGS hydraulic stimulation.
