  • Salient pole rotor type single phase switched reluctance motor is of simple and rigid structure, short shaft and simple driving circuit. Especially, the output power per unit volume of salient pole rotor structure is comparatively high because the magnetic fluxes of axial and radial direction are simultaneously used. Therefore, this motor will be used at small space and difficult maintenance situations. In this paper, the selecting method of proper pole arc, stator, and rotor dimension of salient pole rotor type single phase SRM is proposed.

  • A two-step alternating direction explicit method is developed to solve the space-dependent reactor kinetics equations in two space dimensions. As a special case in the general class of alternating direction implicit methods, this method is analysed for accuracy and stability. To test the validity of this method it is compared with the implicit-difference method used in the TWIGL program. It is shown that the two methods are closely related. The time dependent neutron fluxes of the pressurized water reactor (PWR), during control rod insertion, and, of the CANDU-PHW reactor, in case of postulated loss of coolant accident, are obtained from the numerical calculation results.

  • Wetlands are a critical component of the global carbon cycle and are essential in mitigating climate change. Accurately quantifying wetland carbon emissions is crucial for understanding and predicting the impact of wetlands on the global carbon budget. The uncertainty quantifying carbon in wetlands may comes from the ecosystem's hydrological, biochemical, and microbiological variability. The Community Land Model is a sophisticated and flexible land surface model that offers several configuration options such as energy and water fluxes, vegetation dynamics, and biogeochemical cycling, necessitating careful consideration for the alternative configurations before model implementation to develop a practical model framework. We conducted a systematic literature review, analyzing the alternatives, focusing on the carbon stock pools configurations and the parameters with significant sensitivity for carbon quantification in wetlands. In addition, we evaluated the feasibility and availability of in situ observation data necessary for validating the different alternatives. This analysis identified the most suitable option for our study site, the Binbong Wetland, in Korea.

  • Observing sub-mm continuum emission from cold dust can play an important role in measuring star formation rates of galaxies, especially in the case of AGN host ones, since AGNs contaminate FIR fluxes by dust heating. To measure star formation rates, we observed total 49 local AGN host galaxies(z<0.2) by SCUBA-2 camera at James Clerk Maxwell Telescope(JCMT) at 450㎛ and 850㎛. We performed several tests with the observed images to determine whether each source is detected, and adopted 3s as the flux upper limit in non-detection cases. Using these measurements and FIR archival data, we modeled spectral energy distributions of the galaxies to estimate star formation rates. The effect of AGN activity on host galaxy star formation will be discussed.

  • The powder mixture for fabricating the cermet membranes was prepared by mechanically mixing 60 vol.% vanadium with $Y_2O_3$-stabilized $ZrO_2$ (YSZ). The powder mixture was pressed into disks, which were then sintered in vacuum at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. As-sintered membrane was dense and mounted to a stainless steel ring with brazing filler. Hydrogen fluxes of V/YSZ membrane have been measured in the range of $200{\sim}350^{\circ}C$ with 100% $H_2$. The crack was formed in the both sides of membrane at $350^{\circ}C$ and pressure of 0.5 bar. During permeation experiment, vanadium of V/YSZ membrane reacted with hydrogen to form $V_2H$ which was the origin of crack formation.

  • GRS is an effective urban ecology restoration technique that can manage a variety of environmental functions such as ecological restoration, rainwater spill control and island heat effect from a low-impact development standpoint that can be utilized in new construction and retrofits. Recently, quantitative evaluation studies, both domestic and abroad, in the areas related to these functions, including near-earth surface climate phenomenon, heavy rainwater regulation, thermal environment of buildings, have been actively underway, and there is a trend to standardize in the form of technological standards. In particular, centered on the advanced European countries, studies of standardizing the specific insulation capability of buildings with green system that comprehensively includes the green roof, from the perspective of replacing the exterior materials of existing buildings, are in progress. The limitation of related studies in the difficulties associated with deriving results that reflect material characteristics of continuously evolving systems due in part to not having sufficiently considered the main components of green system, mechanisms of vegetation, soils. This study attempts to derive, through EnergyPlus, the effects that the vegetation-related indicators such as vegetation height, FCV, etc. have on building energy load, by interpreting vegetation and soil mechanisms through plant canopy model and using an ecological standard indicator LAI that represent the condition of plant growth. Through this, the interpretations that assume green roof system as simple heat insulation will be complemented and a more practical building energy performance evaluation method that reflects numerical methods for heat fluxes phenomena that occur between ecology restoration systems comprised of plants and soil and the ambient space.

  • $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-{\delta}}$ membranes were fabricated by solid-state reaction. We investigated sintering behavior and oxygen permeation flux as a function of time-on-stream, temperature and upstream oxygen partial pressure. The oxygen was permeated at temperatures form 750$^{\circ}$C to 950$^{\circ}$C by mixed conducting through oxygen vacancy diffusion in the dense membrane. The oxygen permeation flux through the membrane were about 0.1ml/$cm^3{\cdot}$min at 850$^{\circ}$C. A constant time was required for reaching stable oxygen flux, and oxygen partial pressure affected the oxygen permeation fluxes.

  • Thermal effects are significant loads for assessing concrete dam behaviour during operation. A new methodology to estimate thermal loads on concrete dams taking into account processes which were previously unconsidered, such as: the evaporative cooling, the night radiating cooling or the shades, has been recently reported. The application of this novel approach in combination with a three-dimensional finite element method to solve the heat diffusion equation led to a precise characterization of the thermal field inside the dam. However, that approach may be computationally expensive. This paper proposes the use of a new one-dimensional model based on an explicit finite difference scheme which is improved by means of the reported methodology for computing the heat fluxes through the dam faces. The improved model has been applied to a case study where observations from 21 concrete thermometers and data of climatic variables were available. The results are compared with those from: (a) the original one-dimensional finite difference model, (b) the Stucky-Derron classical one-dimensional analytical solution, and (c) a three-dimensional finite element method. The results of the improved model match well with the observed temperatures, in addition they are similar to those obtained with (c) except in the vicinity of the abutments, although this later is a considerably more complex methodology. The improved model have a better performance than the models (a) and (b), whose results present larger error and bias when compared with the recorded data.

  • An evaluation of the radiation shielding performance of high-Z-particle-loaded polylactic acid (PLA) composite materials was pursued. Specimens were produced via fused deposition modeling (FDM) using copper-PLA, steel-PLA, and BaSO4-PLA composite filaments containing 82.7, 75.2, and 44.6 wt% particulate phase contents, respectively, and were tested under broad-band flash x-ray conditions at the Sandia National Laboratories HERMES III facility. The experimental results for the mass attenuation coefficients of the composites were found to be in good agreement with GEANT4 simulations carried out using the same exposure conditions and an atomistic mixture as a model for the composite materials. Further simulation studies, focusing on the Cu-PLA composite system, were used to explore a shield design parameter space (in this case, defined by Cu-particle loading and shield areal density) to assess performance under both high-energy photon and electron fluxes over an incident energy range of 0.5-15 MeV. Based on these results, a method is proposed that can assist in the visualization and isolation of shield parameter coordinate sets that optimize performance under targeted radiation characteristics (type, energy). For electron flux shielding, an empirical relationship was found between areal density (AD), electron energy (E), composition and performance. In cases where ${\frac{E}{AD}}{\geq}2MeV{\bullet}cm{\bullet}g^{-1}$, a shield composed of >85 wt% Cu results in optimal performance. In contrast, a shield composed of <10 wt% Cu is anticipated to perform best against electron irradiation when ${\frac{E}{AD}}<2MeV{\bullet}cm{\bullet}g^{-1}$.
