This paper presents a finite element formulation for the three-dimensional hierarchical solid element using Integrals of Legendre polynomials. The proposed hexahedral solid element is composed of four different modes including vertex, edge, face, and internal mode, respectively. The eigenvalue and patch test have been carried out to confirm the zero-energy mode and constant strain condition. In addition to these, a posteriori error estimation has been studied for the p-adaptive finite element analysis that is based on a smoothing technique to compute a post-processed solution from the finite element solution. The uniform p-refinement and non-uniform p-refinement are compared in terms of convergence rate as the number of degree of freedom is increased. The simple cantilever beam is tested to show the performance of the proposed solid element.

Lithium batteries are widely used in mobile electronic devices due to their higher voltage and energy density, lighter weight and longer life cycle compared to other secondary batteries. In particular, high demand for lithium batteries is expected for electric cars. In case of lithium batteries used in electric cars, driving distance must be calculated accurately and discharging should not be done below the level of making it impossible to crank. Therefore, accurate information about state of charge (SOC) becomes an essential element for reliable driving. In this paper, a new method of estimating the SOC of lithium polymer batteries by using AC impedance is proposed. In the proposed method, parameters are extracted by fitting a curve of impedance measured at each frequency on the equivalent impedance model and extracted parameters are used to estimate SOC. Experiments were conducted on lithium polymer batteries with similar capacities made by different manufacturers to prove the validity of the proposed method.
In this work, a PWR reactor core dynamics is identified online by a recursive least squares method. Based on this identified reactor model consisting of the control rod position and the core average coolant temperature, the future average coolant temperature is predicted. A model predictive control method is applied to design an automatic controller for thermal power control in PWRs. The basic concept of the model predictive control is to solve an optimization problem for a finite future at current time and to implement as the current control input only the first optimal control input among the solutions of the finite time steps. At the next time step, the procedure to solve the optimization problem is then repeated. The objectives of the proposed model predictive controller are to minimize both the difference between the predicted core coolant temperature and the desired one, and the variation of the control rod positions. Also, the objectives are subject to maximum and minimum control rod positions and maximum control rod speed. Therefore, the genetic algorithm that is appropriate to accomplish multiple objectives is used to optimize the model predictive controller. A 3-dimensional nuclear reactor analysis code, MASTER that was developed by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), is used to verify the proposed controller for a nuclear reactor. From results of numerical simulation to check the performance of the proposed controller at the 5%/min ramp increase or decrease of a desired load and its 10% step increase or decrease which are design requirements, it was found that the nuclear power level controlled by the proposed controller could track the desired power level very well.
The life-cycle prediction of the sub-module which is the unit system of MMC is very important from the viewpoint of maintenance and economic feasibility of HVDC system. However, the life-cycle prediction that considers only the type, number and combination of parts is a generalized result that does not take into account the operating condition of the sub-module, and may significantly differ from the life-cycle of the actual one. Therefore, we design a fault tree for the purpose of reflecting the operation characteristics of the full-bridge sub-module and apply the MIL-HDBK-217F to the failure rate of the basic event to predict the life-cycle of the full-bridge sub-module. It compares the life-cycle expectancy of the conventional failure rate analysis with the proposed fault-tree analysis and compares the lifetime according to whether the redundancy of the full-bridge sub-module is considered.

The seismic control effect of reinforced concrete structures with low energy dissipating capacity due to stiffness degradation is investigated through nonlinear time history analysis. The primary structure is idealized as a SDOF system of modified Takeda hysteresis rule and an elasto-perfectly-plastic nonlinear spring is added to represent a hysteretic damping device. Based on statistics of the numerical analysis, equivalent linearization techniques are evaluated, and empirical equations for response prediction are proposed. As a result, estimation of the ductility demand with proposed empirical equations is more desirable than the equivalent linearization techniques. The optimal yield strengths based on empirical equations are significantly different from the optimal yield strength of elasto-perfectly-plastic systems. Also, the results indicate that the reduction effect of the ductility demand is more remarkable for smaller natural periods.

Liquid storage tank is one of the major infrastructures and generally used to store gases, drinking and utilizing water, dangerous fluids, fire water and so on. According to the recent reports and experiences, the tank structures are damaged in many earthquakes due to their low energy dissipating capacity. Therefore, many researchers have been tried to know the dynamic properties of the tanks including liquids. However, vary limited experimental studies are carried out using relatively small tank models. In this study, a series of shaking table tests are performed with maximum 2 m cubic rectangular liquid storage tanks made of steel to measure the natural frequency and estimate damping coefficient of impulsive and convective mode of the tanks. Especially, the damping values under different shapes and excitation methods are estimated by logarithmic decrement method and half power band-pass method and compared with current design code and standards such as ASCE 7, Eurocode 8 and NZS. Test results show that the impulsive mode damping is around 2% which is proposed by general standards and codes but the impulsive mode damping is 0.13% average that is slightly lower than the code recommendation.
This article suggests the radionuclides which should be considered more important to the offsite consequence assesment during a nuclear power plant accident. For this purpose, the relative importance to the early health effects of released radionuclides on the major organs during the accident is estimated under the assumption of the same release fraction. The inventories of the 25 elements, 54 nuclides selected in the Reactor Safety Study are calculated by ORIGEN 2 code. The organs of interest in the estimation are G. I. track, bone marrow, thyroid and lung. The result shows the relative potential importance of radionuclides as follows: For G.I. track, Np, Ce, Ru, Y, and Zr are of importance in sequence, Np, I, La, Sr, Ba for bone marrow, I and Te for thyroid, Cm, Ce, Ru, Pu, Zr for lung. In addition to iodine and noble gases, therefore, the potential contribution of those nuclides listed above to the offsite consequences should not be overlooked for some accidents of particular sequence.
If the Universe is dominated by cold dark matter and dark energy as in the currently popular ${\Lambda}CDM$ cosmology, it is expected that large scale structures form gradually, with galaxy clusters of mass $M{\geq}10^{14}M_{\odot}$ appearing at around 6 Gyrs after the Big Bang (z ~ 1). Here, we report the discovery of 59 massive structures of galaxies with masses greater than a few times $10^{13}M_{\odot}$ at redshifts between z = 0.6 and 4.5 in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey fields. The massive structures are identified by running top-hat filters on the two dimensional spatial distribution of magnitude-limited samples of galaxies using a combination of spectroscopic and photometric redshifts. We analyze the Millennium simulation data in a similar way to the analysis of the observational data in order to test the ${\Lambda}CDM$ cosmology. We find that there are too many massive structures (M > $7{\times}10^{13}M_{\odot}$) observed at z > 2 in comparison with the simulation predictions by a factor of a few, giving a probability of < 1/2500 of the observed data being consistent with the simulation. Our result suggests that massive structures have emerged early, but the reason for the discrepancy with the simulation is unclear. It could be due to the limitation of the simulation such as the lack of key, unrecognized ingredients (strong non-Gaussianity or other baryonic physics), or simply a difficulty in the halo mass estimation from observation, or a fundamental problem of the ${\Lambda}CDM$ cosmology. On the other hand, the over-abundance of massive structures at high redshifts does not favor heavy neutrino mass of ~ 0.3 eV or larger, as heavy neutrinos make the discrepancy between the observation and the simulation more pronounced by a factor of 3 or more.

In general, geothermal energy pile and horizontal ground heat exchangers are installed in shallower depths than conventional vertical ground coupled heat pumps. Consequently their heat exchange performance is strongly governed by thermal conductivity of soil layer. Previous studies have shown that the thermal conductivity of soil above ground water table significantly affects the heat exchange rate because of partially saturated condition in soil and consequent variation of soil thermal conductivity. This paper presents a study result on the prediction of thermal conductivity of weathered granite soils. For weathered granite soils sampled from 5 locations, thermal conductivity tests were conducted with varying porosity and degree of saturation. The existing thermal conductivity models in literatures appeared inappropriate to the weathered granite soils. Hence, an empirical equation was proposed in this paper and its validity was examined by applying it to thermal conductivity test results obtained for weathered granite soils in this study and from literatures.
Irrigation control plays an important role in improving productivity of paprika which is very sensitive to moisture condition. Among environmental factors, light intensity and distribution are not easily controlled and showed a big difference depending on season and region. For adequate irrigation control, therefore, transpiration and irrigation amounts considering light environmental data should be estimated. In current study, modified transpiration model was used for more precise estimation of transpiration. Seasonal transpiration and irrigation amounts at different regions were compared by using light environmental data provided from Korea Meteorological Administration. The transpiration amount in summer was rather smaller than those in spring and autumn seasons in Korea due to large deviations in light intensity as well as rainy period in summer. Irrigation system capacities at various regions could be recommended by using the transpiration amount in the spring having the longest photoperiod in the year. These results will be useful to the design of irrigation system and optimization of input energy in greenhouse.
