Transparent Conductors for Photoelectric Devices

  • Transparent conductors are commonly used in photoelectric devices, where the electric energy converts to light energy or vice versa. Energy consumption devices, such as LEDs, Displays, Lighting devices use the electrical energy to generate light by carrier recombination. Meanwhile, solar cell is the only device to generate electric energy from the incident photon. Most photoelectric devices require a transparent electrode to pass the light in or out from a device. Beyond the passive role, transparent conductors can be employed to form Schottky junction or heterojunction to establish a rectifying current flow. Transparent conductor-embedded heterojunction device provides significant advantages of transparent electrode formation, no need for intentional doping process, and enhanced light-reactive surface area. Herein, we present versatile applications of transparent conductors, such as NiO, ZnO, ITO in photoelectric devices of solar cells and photodetectors for high-performing UV or IR detection. Moreover, we also introduce the growth of transparent ITO nanowires by sputtering methods for large scale application.

  • As a national enterprise has been expanded over and over, the worldwide energy consumption has been growing necessarily. Moreover, as recently energy spendings are on the increase in countries such as BRICs, it has resulted that a rise in the price of both oil and mineral resources and instability between supply and demand become serious issue in the world resources market. The recent high price of oil and mineral resources have a deep influence on economy and threaten energy security and even national prosperity of Korea. In addition to these, exhaustion of fossil fuels and the enhanced greenhouse effect which results from gases emitted as a result of fossil fuels has been in serious questions which occur a great deal of effort to secure clean energy resources all around the world. As it is considerably possible for Korea that the Kyoto protocol may come into effect on and after 2013, it is essential to require the technological development to promote energy efficiency as well as to develope safe and renewable energy resources. The wind energy technology which converts kinetic energy into electrical energy has been in the focus of the world's attention. In this study, two-dimensional numerical analyses were conducted to observe subsidence aspects of the sea bottom on differently applied loads and various ground conditions.

Measurement of low energy beta radiation from Ni-63 by using peeled-off Gafchromic EBT3 film

  • Ni-63 is pure beta source which emits low energy beta particles. The Ni-63 sources were fabricated to develop the beta-voltaic battery which converts decay energy into electrical energy for power generation. Activity distribution of the source was important factor of power producibility of the beta-voltaic battery. Liquid scintillation counter widely used for measurement of low energy beta emitters was not suitable to measure activity distribution. In this study, we used the peeled-off Gafchromic™ EBT3 film to measure the activity distribution of the Ni-63 source. Absorbed dose was increased proportionally to the source activity and exposure duration. The low energy beta particles could transport the energy into the active layer without the polyester protective layer. Also, Activity distribution was measured by using the peeled-off EBT3 film. Two-dimensional dosimetric distribution was suitable to measure the activity distribution. To use the peeled-off EBT3 film is user-friendly and cost-effective method for quality assurance of the Ni-63 sources for the beta-voltaic battery.

  • With the increased demand of clean energy and global warming measures, the renewable energy development has been increased recently. The TCP (Tidal Current Power) is one of the ocean renewable energy sources. Having the high tidal energy source in Korea, there are many potential TCP sites with strong current speed. The rotor, which initially converts the energy, is a very important component because it affects the efficiency of the entire system. The rotor performance is determined by various design parameters including number of blades, shape, sectional size, diameters and etc. However, the interactions between devices also contribute significantly to the energy production. The rotor performance considering the interaction needs to be investigated to predict the exact power in the farm. This paper introduces the optimum design of TCP turbine and the performance of devices considering the interference between rotors.

  • 본 논문은 기계적 에너지를 전기에너지로 변환하는 압전소자를 이용한 에너지 수확 시스템 내에서 전력변환을 수행하는 새로운 AC/DC 공진형 자려(自勵) 부스트 컨버터를 제안한다. AC/DC 공진형 자려 부스트 컨버터의 자려 스위칭을 위한 게이트 회로는, MOSFET 특성을 이용하여 압전소자 출력전압의 최대값을 검출하고 LC 공진회로의 특성을 이용하여 영전압 스위칭을 하며, 승압형 전력변환을 수행하기 위해서 별도의 전원을 필요로 하지 않는다. 제안된 컨버터 회로의 동작원리를 설명하고, 기존 연구 개발된 토폴로지와 비교, PSPICE 시뮬레이션 및 실험을 통하여 유용성을 검증한다.

  • 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. (1) 유압 펌프, 유량조절 밸브(오리피스)등을 주된 구성 요소로 하는 구조가 간단하고, 운전.관리가 용이한 유압식 풍력.열 변환 장치를 개발하였다. (2) 실험 결과로부터 본 장치의 에너지 변환 효율이 매우 높음을 확인하였다. (3) 출력 에너지가 열 에너지이므로 온수 탱크를 사용하여 쉽게 에너지를 저장할 수 있음을 실험적으로 확인하였다. (4) 본 장치는 대량 생산되는 유압 부품들만을 사용하여 구성이 가능하므로 매우 저렴한 가격으로, 신뢰성이 우수한 장치를 제작할 수 있다

Performance Analysis of Multiple Wave Energy Converters due to Rotor Spacing

  • A numerical hydrodynamic performance analysis of the pitch-type multibody wave energy converter (WEC) is carried out based on both linear potential flow theory and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the unidirectional wave condition. In the present study, Salter's duck (rotor) is chosen for the analysis. The basic concept of the WEC rotor, which nods when the pressure-induced motions are in phase, is that it converts the kinetic and potential energies of the wave into rotational mechanical energy with the proper power-take-off system. This energy is converted to useful electric energy. The analysis is carried out using three WEC rotors. A multibody analysis using linear potential flow theory is performed using WAMIT (three-dimensional diffraction/radiation potential analysis program), and a CFD analysis is performed by placing three WEC rotors in a numerical wave tank. In particular, the spacing between the three rotors is set to 0.8, 1, and 1.2 times the rotor width, and the hydrodynamic interaction between adjacent rotors is checked. Finally, it is confirmed that the dynamic performance of the rotors slightly changes, but the difference due to the spacing is not noticeable. In addition, the CFD analysis shows a lateral flow phenomenon that cannot be confirmed by linear potential theory, and it is confirmed that the CFD analysis is necessary for the motion analysis of the rotor.

  • Hydrogen is bridge fuel with high energy content and environmentally friendly to satisfy the stringent IMO regulation relating to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. There is growing interest in hydrogen in numerous nations and regions illustrated by an extensive range of research and development in technology. Regarding maritime applications, researchers have recognized the utilization of hydrogen as a fuel for fuel cells, a device that converts the chemical energy of the fuel to electrical energy. Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), with high working temperature, is easy to combine with the waste heat recovery cycles/devices to increase output power and thermodynamic performances as well. Furthermore, the cold energy from liquid hydrogen supplied to SOFC can also be used to generate more power. In this study, we proposed a SOFC integrated system with the idea of combining the waste heat recovery from the SOFC exhaust stream and cold energy utilization from LH2. The designation is aimed to target small-scale vessel which uses electric propulsion for short distances voyage.

  • All matter above absolute zero emits thermal energy. Thermal imaging system converts the infrared radiation of a scene into a live picture of that scene : the thermal image is a pictorial representation of temperature differences. This paper has outlined the principles of thermal imaging and has briefly reviewed the history, and the present day and future technology.

  • Fuel cells power generating system converts the chemical energy of a fuel directly into electrical energy. The merits of fuel cells power generating system are pollution free and high energy conversion efficiency. Fuel cells power generating system includes the DC/AC converter. DC source obtained from stack is converted to the constant AC voltage or current by the inverter. In this paper, the power control techniques for the fuel cells power generating system are described.
