  • We studied change in water contact angle on $TiO_2$ surfaces upon high-energy electron-beam treatment. Depending on conditions of e-beam exposures, surface OH-content could be increased or decreased. In contrast, water contact angle continuously decreased with increasing e-beam exposure and energy, i.e. change in the water contact angle cannot be rationalized in terms of the overall change in the surfacestructure of carbon-contaminated $TiO_2$. In the C 1s spectra, we found that the C-O and C=O contents gradually increased with increasing e-beam energy, suggesting that the change in the surface structure of carbon layers can be important for understanding of the wettability change. Our results imply that the degree of oxidation of carbon impurity layers on oxide surfaces should be considered, in order to fully understand the change in the oxide surface wettability.

  • In order to investigate the possibility of waste mushroom logs as biomass resource chemical and physical characteristics of normal woods and waste mushroom logs such as crystallinity value, energy consumption, total sugar yield after hydrolysis chemical compounds and molecular weight distribution after acid hydrolysis, were examined. In the results, crystallinity of waste mushroom logs which were three year passed after the inoculation was decreased drastically from 49% to 33% during the cultivation. Lignin contents as chemical compounds of normal woods and waste mushroom logs were 21.07% and 18.78%, respectively. By the results of measurement of energy consumption, the size reduction of normal woods required a significantly higher energy than that of waste mushroom logs. In the hydrolysis, total sugar yield by enzyme and acid hydrolysis were high in waste mushroom logs(53% 57.5%) than in normal woods(42.9%, 47.17%). According to the molecular weight distribution using GPC, low molecular weight compounds were distributed in waste mushroom logs. Based on these results, waste mushroom logs have enough potential as material for developing alternative energy because of easily conversion to sugar by various hydrolysis methods and requirement of low energy consumption during size reduction.

  • This study was conducted to examine the energy content and photosynthetic efficiency of Quercus mongolica stands in Korea. Study sites were located in Mt. Joongwang, Gangwon-do (1,000 m and 800 m above sea level), Mt. Baekwoon, Jeollanam-do (800 m a.s.l.), Mt. Halla, Jeju-do (1,000 m a.s.l.), Mt. Taehwa, Gyeonggi-do (350 m a.s.l.), and Mt. Wolak, Chungcheongbuk-do (300 m a.s.l.). Total energy content and annual energy accumulation in Q. mongolica stands were 2,916-6,435 GJ/ha and 284-441 GJ/ha, respectively. Lower latitude (N.L.) stands of Q. mongolica showed higher energy contents than higher latitude stands, but Quercus stands in Mt. Baekwoon had higher annual energy accumulation than those in Mt. Halla located at a lower latitude. During the growing season, the photosynthetic efficiency of 60 to 70-year-old Q. mongolica stands ranged from 1.19 to 1.34% while that of 35-year-old stands did from 1.87 to 1.95%. There were no significant differences in photosynthetic efficiency among the latitudes because solar radiation was higher in low latitudes.

  • We investigated the effects of operating variables, such as electrical. reactor and gas parameters on toluene removal and discharge property in the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) process. The toluene removal was initiated with the energy transfer to the reactor by loading of voltages higher than the discharge onset value. The energy transfer and toluene removal increased with the applied voltage. Higher removal rate was observed with smooth surface electrode despite of lower energy transfer compared with the coarse electrode, because more uniform discharge can be obtained on smooth surface state. The decrease of dielectric material thickness enhanced the removal efficiency by increasing the discharge potential. The toluene removal efficiency decreased with the increase of the inlet concentration. The increase of gas retention time enhanced the removal efficiency by the increase of energy density. The oxygen and humidity contents seem to exert significant influences on the toluene removal by dominating the generation of electrons, ions, and radicals which are key factors in the removal mechanism.

  • The optimum mixing conditions of silica and silane containing rubber composites were evaluated by investigating the properties of rubber composites prepared with a silica composition of 10, 20, 40, 60, and 80 g, respectively. The crosslinking rate decreased with increasing silica content, with he promoters being adsorbed on the silica surface with in the rubber composite. As a result, the increase in crosslinking time resulted in the destruction of the silica structure. The increase of the bound rubber content due to the destruction of the silica structure inhibited the chain motion of the polymer molecules and reduced the cohesion of the silica itself. Finally, the increase of silica content showed the increase of hardness, tensile strength, and storage modulus of rubber composites.

  • The notched Charpy and Izod impact tests arc the most prevalent techniques used to characterize the effects of high impulse loads on ploymeric materials. An analysis method for rubber toughened PVC is suggested to evaluate critical strain energy release rates(Gc) from the Charpy impact energy measurements. An Instrumented Charpy impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture properties in addition to total fracture properties and maximum critical loads. The stress intensity factor Kd was computed for varying amounts of rubber contents from the obtained maximum critical loads and also toughening effects were investigated as well.
