Parametric Analysis and Design of SDOF Vibration-Type Triboelectric Generator

  • A triboelectric generator uses the principles of static electrification and electrostatic induction to convert mechanical energy into useful electrical energy. In this work we study a single degree of freedom (SDOF) vibration type triboelectric generator that is initiated by a vibrating source at its base. The system is modeled in Abaqus and the design parameters are systematically explored by their effect on the output. The relationships between the parameters: input force, input frequency, mass, spring stiffness and gap between the plates, are analyzed. Finally, based on initial experiments, and simulation results, a design methodology is formulated. The methodology will provide guidance for application specific design of reliable and effective vibration type triboelectric generators.

  • In this paper, a study has been performed for development of dynamic voltage restorer(DVR) system using EDLC (Electric Double Layer Capacitor) to solve voltage sags which are considered the dominant disturbances affecting power quality. With the prolific use of semiconductor devices in electrical equipment, modern-day loads are becoming increasingly sensitive to the sags and the disturbances prove to be costly to industries. As a technology-driven custom power installation, the Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is recognized to be most effective equipment that can be used to counter the voltage sag problem. Hence, this paper proposes the high-performance optimal design of On-Line type DVR system which can efficiently compensate the instantaneous voltage sag and instantaneous interruption of the utility voltage source.

Glycogen Metabolism in Vibrio vulnificus Affected by malP and malQ

  • Vibrio vulnificus needs various responsive mechanisms to survive and transmit successfully in alternative niches of human and marine environments, and to ensure the acquisition of steady energy supply to facilitate such unique life style. The bacterium had genetic constitution very different from that of Escherichia coli regarding metabolism of glycogen, a major energy reserve. V. vulnificus accumulated more glycogen than other bacteria and at various levels according to culture medium and carbon source supplied in excess. Glycogen was accumulated to the highest level in Luria-Bertani (3.08 mg/mg protein) and heart infusion (4.30 mg/mg protein) complex media supplemented with 1% (w/v) maltodextrin at 3 h into the stationary phase. Regarding effect of carbon source, more glycogen was accumulated when maltodextrin (2.34 mg/mg protein) was added than when glucose or maltose (0.78.1-14 mg/mg protein) was added as an excessive carbon source to M9 minimal medium, suggesting that maltodextrin metabolism might affect glycogen metabolism very closely. These results were supported by the analysis using the malP (encoding a maltodextrin phosphorylase) and malQ (encoding a 4-${\alpha}$-glucanotransferase) mutants, which accumulated much less glycogen than wild type when either glucose or maltodextrin was supplied as an excessive carbon source, but at different levels (3.1-80.3% of wild type glycogen). Therefore, multiple pathways for glycogen metabolism were likely to function in V. vulnificus and that responding to maltodextrin might be more efficient in synthesizing glycogen. All of the glycogen samples from 3 V. vulnificus strains under various conditions showed a narrow side chain length distribution with short chains (G4-G6) as major ones. Not only the comparatively large accumulation volume but also the structure of glycogen in V. vulnificus, compared to other bacteria, may explain durability of the bacterium in external environment.

  • We developed micro power generation system using piezoelectric materials. In our system, the ambient vibrating energy is converting to electric energy by deflection of piezoelectric beams. The system consists of energy generating parts, converting enhancement parts, electric regulation and charging parts, and interface with small-energy-consuming mobile devices. The geometry of piezoelectric beams, the source of vibrating energy, and the electric load of target application determine the characteristics of generating electric power, such as impedance, voltage, current and power density. Therefore, we made a model for analysis of generating power with given information such as piezoelectric materials, geometry, vibration type, and mass. With this model, we can calculate capacitance of piezoelectric beams, generating voltage, current, and power. To obtain maximum energy transfer efficiency, we approached this study in the view of material, electrical, and mechanical engineering

Performance Evaluation and Economic Estimation of Ground Source Heat Pump Cooling and Heating System (지열 냉난방 시스템의 성능 및 경제성 평가)

  • Performance evaluation and economic estimation were conducted on the water to water GSHP (Ground Source Heat Pump) installed in existing building. Ground heat exchanger was a closed vertical loop type and sized to be 5 boreholes and 100m depth per borehole. Operation efficiency of the system shows that, COP increased from 3.0 to 4.2 with entering water temperature in heating operation, however, COP decreased from 5.0 to 3.7 in cooling operation. Economic estimation was analyzed by LCC (Life Cycle Cost) method and it showed that GSHP could save 68% of cost compare to the conventional oil source. Thus, despite of the large amount of initial cost, GSHP has a economic advantage to the other energy sources.

  • As energy becomes an important source of power for national competitive force, not only Government administrations but also private sectors are striving to save energy. The purpose of this study is to compare and evaluate energy consumption of the corridor with and without window when improving the energy environment by installing door and window on the open area of entrance for one-side corridor type apartment. The energy usage was examined through this improvement process and the energy consumption amount was compared and analyzed by simulation before and after the installation. It is desired for this study to contribute to the government's green remodeling project.

Economic Analysis of Cooling-Heating System Using Ground Source Heat in Horticultural Greenhouse (시설원예의 지열냉·난방시스템 경제성 분석)

  • Government Geothermal Cooling-Heating Projects has made efforts to reduce GHG(Greenhouse Gas) emissions and to manage cost of greenhouse farm households. This study evaluated the economic benefits of heating load rate of change by comparing Geothermal Cooling-Heating System with the existing system(greenhouse diesel heating) in the Government Geothermal Cooling-Heating Projects. Economic analysis results shows that, 1) When installing the Cooling-Heating system according to the ratio of 70% heating load in policy standards, the geothermal cooling-heating system has economic efficiency with greenhouse type or scale independent because the investment cost is recovered within 7 years. And It was more economic efficiency the ratio of 50% heating load than70% heating load. 2) When installing the Cooling-Heating system according to the glass greenhouse of the ratio of 90% heating load, pay period of investment cost is recovered within 5 years. Therefore it is necessary to apply flexible heating sharing according to greenhouse type or scale.

Flexible Thermoelectric Device Using Thick Films for Energy Harvesting from the Human Body

  • A flexible thermoelectric device using body heat has drawn attention as a power source for wearable devices. In this study, thermoelectric thick films were fabricated by cold pressing method using p-type antimony telluride and n-type bismuth telluride powders in accordance with specific loads. Thermoelectric thick films were denser and improved the electrical and thermoelectric properties while increasing the load of the cold pressing. The thickness of the specimen can be controlled by the amount of material; specimens were approximately 700 um in thickness. Flexible thermoelectric devices were manufactured by using the thermoelectric thick films on PI (Polyimide) substrate. The process is cheap, efficient, easy and scalable. Evaluation of power generation performance and flexibility on the fabricated flexible thermoelectric device was carried out. The flexible thermoelectric device has great flexibility and good performance and can be applied to wearable electronics as a power source.

Hydrogen ion effect on the formation of DLC thin film by negative carbon ion beam (탄소 음이온빔으로 증착되는 DLC 박막 제조에 미치는 수소 이온의 영향)

  • We investigated the effect of hydrogen ion beam on the formation of DLC thin film, which is deposited on the Si substrate with negative carbon ion by $Cs^+$ ion sputtering and positive hydrogen ion by Kauffmann type ion source. The amount of hydrogen in the DLC films increased as increasing hydrogen gas flow rate from 0 sccm to 12 sccm. As increasing hydrogen flow rate, $sp^2$bonding structure increased. The reason is that the hydrogen ions have relatively high energy, although total amount of hydrogen is very small compared with that of CVD process. These results suggest that the physical energy transfer plays a dominant role on the formation of DLC film.

Case Study on the Energy Consumption Unit of District Apartments (지역난방 공동주택의 에너지원별 원단위 사례분석)

  • This study investigated the total energy consumption and the energy consumption by type of 31 apartment complexes in Daejeon. The energy is supplied to the apartments from district heating, and can be divided into hot water, electricity, and gas. Hot water is used in for space heating and for domestic hot water (DHW), and electricity is used for plugs, cooling, ventilation, and public utilities (street lights, pumps, elevators, etc.). All gas supplied from district heating is used for cooking. As a result, the consumption unit of each energy source of independent dwelling areas was calculated to be $103.7kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$ ($15,692kWh/H{\cdot}a$) for thermal energy, $48.0kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$ ($4,646kWh/H{\cdot}a$) for electricity, and $10.5kWh/m^2a$ ($1,015kWh/H{\cdot}a$) for gas, so the entire consumption was calculated to be $162.3kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$ ($15,692kWh/H{\cdot}a$).
