  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were to compare total energy expenditure (including PAL and RMR) of Korean farmers between the farming season and off farming season and to assess the accuracy of estimated energy requirement (EER) prediction equation reported in KDRIs. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Subjects were 72 Korean farmers (males 23, females 49) aged 30-64 years. Total energy expenditure was calculated by multiplying measured RMR by PAL. EER was calculated by using the prediction equation suggested in KDRIs 2010. RESULTS: The physical activity level (PAL) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the farming season (male $1.77{\pm}0.22$, female $1.69{\pm}0.24$) than the off farming season (male $1.53{\pm}0.32$, female $1.52{\pm}0.19$). But resting metabolic rate was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the off farming season (male $1,890{\pm}233kcal/day$, female $1,446{\pm}140kcal/day$) compared to the farming season (male $1,727{\pm}163kcal/day$, female $1,356{\pm}164kcal/day$). TEE ($2,304{\pm}497kcal/day$) of females was significantly higher in the farming season than that ($2,183{\pm}389kcal/day$) of the off farming season, but in males, there was no significant difference between two seasons in TEE. On the other hand, EER of male and female ($2,825{\pm}354kcal/day$ and $2,115{\pm}293kcal/day$) of the farming season was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those ($2,562{\pm}339kcal/day$ and $1,994{\pm}224kcal/day$) of the off farming season. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that there is a significant difference in PAL and TEE of farmers between farming and off farming seasons. And EER prediction equation proposed by KDRI 2010 underestimated TEE, thus EER prediction equation for farmers should be reviewed.

  • Most seismic sea waves in the East Sea originate from earthquakes occurring near the Japanese west coast. While the waves propagate in the East Sea, they are deformed by refraction, diffraction and scattering. Though the Boussinesq equation is most applicable for such wave phenomena, it was not used in numerical modelling of seismic sea waves in the East Sea. To examine characteristics of seismic sea waves in the East Sea, numerical models based on the Boussinesq equation are established and used to simulate recent tsunamis. By considering Ursell parameter and Kajiura parameter, it is proved that Boussinesq equation is a proper equation for seismic sea waves in the East Sea. Two models based on the Boussinesq equation and linear wave equation are executed with the same initial conditions and grid size ($1min{\times}1min$), and the results are compared in various respects. The Boussinesq equation model produced better results than the linear model in respect to wave propagation and concentration of wave energy. It is also certified that the Boussinesq equation model can be used for operational purpose if it is optimized. Another Boussinesq equation model whose grid size is $40sec{\times}30sec$ is set up to simulate the 1983 and 1993 tsunamis. As the result of simulation, new propagation charts of 2 seismic sea waves focused on the Korean east coast are proposed. Even though the 1983 and 1993 tsunamis started at different areas, the propagation paths near the Korean east coast are similar and they can be distinguished into 4 paths. Among these, total energy and propagating time of the waves passing over North Korea Plateau(NKP) and South Korea Plateau(SKP) determine wave height at the Korean east coast. In case of the 1993 tsunami, the wave passing over NKP has more energy than the wave over SKP. In case of the 1983 tsunami, the huge energy of the wave passing over SKP brought about great maximum wave heights at Mukho and Imwon. The Boussinesq equation model established in this study is more useful for simulation of seismic sea waves near the Korean east coast than it is the Japanese coast. To improve understanding of seismic sea waves in shallow water, a coastal area model based on the Boussinesq equation is also required.

  • In this article we prove the existence of the solution to the mixed problem for Euler-Bernoulli beam equation with memory condition at the boundary and we study the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding solutions. We proved that the energy decay with the same rate of decay of the relaxation function, that is, the energy decays exponentially when the relaxation function decay exponentially and polynomially when the relaxation function decay polynomially.

  • In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for a class of nonlinear sixth-order wave equation. The global existence and the finite time blow-up for the problem are proved by the potential well method at both low and critical initial energy levels. Furthermore, we present some sufficient conditions on initial data such that the weak solution exists globally at supercritical initial energy level by introducing a new stable set.

  • In this paper, we consider a viscoelastic plate equation with p-Laplacian $u^{{\prime}{\prime}}+{\Delta}^2u-div({\mid}{\nabla}u{\mid}^{p-2}{\nabla}u)+{\sigma}(t){\int}_{0}^{t}g(t-s){\Delta}u(s)ds-{\Delta}u^{\prime}=0$. By introducing suitable energy and Lyapunov functionals, we establish a general decay estimate for the energy, which depends on the behavior of both ${\sigma}$ and g.

  • In this paper, we addressed a modeling for the magnetic levitation stage. This planar magnetic levitator employs four permanent magnet liner motors. Each motor generates vertical force for suspension against gravity, as well as horizontal force for propulsion. Therefore. this stage can generate six degrees of freedom motion by the combination of forces. We derived a mechanical dynamics equation using Lagrangian method and electromechanical dynamics equation by using Co-energy method. Based on the derived dynamics, we can analyze the stage motion that is subject to the input currents and forces.

  • Effective range of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction was studied by numerical analysis instead of empirical method. Numerical analyses were carried out with commercial FEM code, ABAQUS, and verified by comparing the numerical results with field tests of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction. Most of material properties were evaluated by data from laboratory and in-situ tests. Vertical effective range was estimated by distribution curve of plastic strain energy dissipated through soil layers under dynamic load and these results were in good agreement with field tests. Based on verification, the effects of governing properties of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction such as number of hit can be determined by numerical analyses. In addition, vertical effective range can also be determined by Menard's empirical equation using the external work at converging time of plastic strain energy in numerical analysis. This implies that the minimum energy of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction for improvement can be determined by Menard's equation.

  • This simulator is developed for the analysis of a MOSFET based on Thermally Coupled Energy Transport Model(TCETM). The simulator has the ability to calculate not only stationary characteristics but also non - stationary characteristics of a MOSFET. It solves basic semiconductor devices equations including Possion equation, current continuity equations for electrons and holes, energy balance equation for electrons and heat flow equation, using finite difference method. The conventional semiconductor device simulation technique, based on the Drift-Diffusion Model (DDM), neglects the thermal and other energy-related properties of a miniaturized device. I, therefore, developed a simulator based on the Thermally Coupled Energy Transport Model (TCETM) which treats not only steady-state but also transient phenomena of such a small-size MOSFET. In particular, the present paper investigates the breakdown characteristics in transient conditions. As a result, we found that the breakdown voltage has been largely underestimated by the DDM in transient conditions.

  • To describe turbulent wake behind a submarine, it is very important to know turbulent kinetic energy distributions in the wake. To get the distribution is to solve the turbulent kinetic energy equation, and to solve the equation, it is needed both information of ${\lambda}$ and ${\sigma}$ which define physical characteristics of the wake. This paper gives analytical solution of the equation, which is driven from $8^{th}$ order polynomial fitting, as a function of given ${\lambda}$, even though there is no information of ${\sigma}$. In comparison between numerical solution(i.e. exact solution) and analytical solution, the relative errors between them are less than to 5% in the range of 0 < ${\xi}$ < 0.95 in most given ${\lambda}$.
