  • This paper investigates the energy absorption characteristics of thin-walled rectangular tubes. In the compact mode, the crushing process of a thin-walled tube is analyzed into 3 parts by the ratio of outward to inward fold length. The mean crush load and the half-wave folding length are determined by using minimum energy principle. The effective crush distance can be determined when half-wave folding length is known, and the number of folds is derived when crush distance is given. Thus when the crush distance is given, energy absorption capacity can be estimated with mean crush load and number of folds. And the theoretical value is proven experimentally.

  • Seedlayers with low surface energy which increases the density of nucleation sites in the initial growth region of the recording layer deposited on them was studied to reduce grain size in recording layer. The seedlayer with low surface energy was so effective to attain finer grain in magnetic upper-layers. The Ni-Fe-O intermediate layer with low surface energy was found to be effective in reduction of grain size as well as magnetic cluster size of Co-Cr-Ta-Pt recording layer. Furthermore, the reduction of grain size in Co-Cr-Ta-Pt recording layer on Ni-Fe-O intermediate layer with low surface energy led to decrease the noise level in the high recording density region.

  • A rail heating system can be classified as the method which uses a natural phenomena change in climate condition and the method which uses electric energy. The former uses a the sunshine and wind for frozen rail or snow. On the other hand, and the latter uses the electric energy. In this paper, to set up an effective thaw system in railway facilities using the electric energy, the component for thaw equipments, the installing method, the method for temperature regulation, and the maintenance technique will be analyzed and compared, which results in an introduction of an effective and economic scheme for respective railway systems. Although the portion of thaw system is not quite large in the entire railway facilities, a significant energy saving and cost reduction can be expected if the proper system is employed.

  • Temperature distribution measurements in the mockup apparatus of reactor vessel were performed to determine the effective thermal conductivity of porous media with different geometry and to obtain the experimental data for the heat transfer processes by natural convection occurring in the air duct. The temperature distributions at four separated sections with different arrangements of porous media have different slopes according to the geometrical configuration. From the measured temperature distribution, effective thermal conductivity have been derived using the least square fitting method. The test at air duct was performed to the high heat removal at 3.4kW/$m^2$ by the natural convection from the outer wall to the air. And also the temperature distributions in the air duct agree well with the 1/7th power-law turbulent temperature distribution. The obtained heat transfer data have been compared with the Shin's and Sieger's correlations.

  • Most high efficiency silicon solar cells use a passivated selective emitter. It have been an important research subject for crystalline silicon solar cells for decades. It is being used in production for high efficiency solar cells. Most of the selective emitter process require expensive extra masking, etching steps, and a double diffusion process making selective emitters not cost effective. In this paper, we study method for single diffusion step selective emitter process as an alternative to not cost effective double diffusion process. Cost effective selective emitter that the efficiency should be increased significantly (mare than 0.2%) and that the process should simple, robust and cheap.

  • We studied experimentally and theoretically the vertical range of the confined electric field in the gap area of metamaterials, which was analyzed for various gap widths using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. We measured the resonant frequency as a function of the thickness of poly(methyl methacrylate) in the range 0 to 3.2 μm to quantify the effective detection volumes. We found that the effective vertical range of the metamaterial is determined by the size of the gap width. The vertical range was found to decrease as the gap width of the metamaterial decreases, whereas the sensitivity is enhanced as the gap width decreases due to the highly concentrated electric field. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with the finite-difference time-domain simulation results. Finally, a numerical expression was obtained for the vertical range as a function of the gap width. This expression is expected to be very useful for optimizing the sensing efficiency.

  • The most important factor in the wireless sensor network is the use of effective energy and increase in lifetime of the individual nodes in order to operate the wireless network more efficiently. For this purpose, various routing protocols have been developed. The LEACH such a protocol, well known among typical cluster routing protocols. However, when a cluster head is selected, the energy consumption may not be equal because it does not take into account the energy of the nodes. In this paper, we seek to improve the cluster head selection method according to residual energy of each sensor node. This method then adaptively applies the LEACH algorithm and the cluster head section algorithm with consideration of node energy in accordance with the energy of the whole sensor field. Through the simulation, it was found that this proposed algorithm was effective.

  • This study is aimed at substantially reducing the particulate matter (dust) emission during the combustion of heavy fuel in boilers by addition of combustion improver. The combustion improver used were the oil-soluble organometallic compounds that were found to be more effective than the dispersing agents that are generally used for reducing the particulate emission. The dust reduction effect was found to depend on the active materials (metals) as well as on the organic ligand part of organometallic compounds. Acetylacetonoate and naphthenate of Fe and Ca were found to be most effective for dust reduction. Addition of Fe and Ca organometallic compounds as combustion improver in concentration of 30 ppm (metal basis) to heavy fuel oil, caused dust reduction by 50 wt% to 80 wt%.

  • The objective of the work was to evaluate the impact of lighting energy to cooling and heating consumption in medium scale office building, when currently installed fluorescent lights were replaced with various LED lighting fixtures. This evaluation comes from an integrated approach combining the proper indoor lighting environment and the thermal aspects of cooling & heating consumption in office building. These simulations were performed by coupling an appropriate luminaire analysis for energy consumption and a dynamic thermal simulation software (TRNSYS). To analyze comparative study of effects on the heating, cooling loads, and energy consumption of an LED lamp application, 2 types of LED lamp with low light power watt(LPW) 24W and high LPW 7.5W and a fluorescent lights(FL) with 37W are used respectively. Integrated building energy consumption decreased up to 3.2% when fluorescent lamps were replaced with LEDs. Thus, the high LPW of LED(7.5W) replaced with the same number of FL shows an effective energy saving and cost- effective luminary.

  • The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute acquired the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory phantom for calibration of germanium detectors used for in vivo measurement of radionuclides deposited in human lungs. The manufacturer inscribed concentric circles as a phoswich detector positioning guides on the phantom's torso plate and its overlay plates, and provided the effective thickness of the chest wall for each plate measured at locations over the circles. However, since the germanium detectors are of different sizes, the areas considered for phoswich detectors were no. longer applicable for the locations of the germanium detectors on the phantom. Therefore, we re-evaluated the effective thickness of the phantom to determine if the manufacturer' s data are valid for germanium detectors in use for in vivo lung counting or if new values must be implemented. Differences no more than 3% in effective thickness were found between the germanium detector regions to be used at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and the phoswich detector regions prescribed by the manufacturer.
