In this paper, the energy-based plastic-damage model previously proposed by the authors [International Journal of Solids and Structures, 43(3-4): 583-612] is first simplified with an empirically defined evolution law for the irreversible strains, and then it is extended to its rate-dependent version to account for the strain rate effect. Regarding the energy dissipation by the motion of the structure under dynamic loadings, within the framework of continuum damage mechanics a new damping model is proposed and incorporated into the developed rate-dependent plastic-damage mode, leading to a unified constitutive model which is capable of directly considering the damping on the material scale. Pertinent computational aspects concerning the numerical implementation and the algorithmic consistent modulus for the unified model are also discussed in details, through which the dynamic nonlinear analysis of damping structures can be coped with by the same procedures as those without damping. The proposed unified plastic-damage model is verfied by the simulations of concrete specimens under different quasistatic and high rate straining loading conditions, and is then applied to the Koyna dam under earthquake motions. The numerical predictions agree fairly well with the results obtained from experimental tests and/or reported by other investigators, demonstrating its capability for reproducing most of the typical nonlinear performances of concrete under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions.
The dynamic character of a system of the governing differential equations for the one- dimensional two-fluid model, where the momentum flux parameters are employed to consider the velocity and void fraction distribution in a flow channel, is investigated. In response to a perturbation in the form of a'traveling wave, a linear stability analysis is peformed for the governing differential equations. The expression for the growth factor as a function of wave number and various flow parameters is analytically derived. It provides the necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of the one-dimensional two-fluid model in terms of momentum flux parameters. It is demonstrated that the one-dimensional two-fluid model employing the physical momentum flux parameters for the whole range of dispersed flow regime, which are determined from the simplified velocity and void fraction profiles constructed from the available experimental data and $C_{o}$ correlation, is stable to the linear perturbations in all wave-lengths. As the basic form of the governing differential equations for the conventional one-dimensional two-fluid model is mathematically ill posed, it is suggested that the velocity and void distributions should be properly accounted for in the one-dimensional two-fluid model by use of momentum flux parameters.s.
The Low Carbon Path Calculator is an excel-based model to project greenhouse gas emissions from 2009 to 2050, which is based on the 2050 Pathways Calculator developed by the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Scenarios are developed to reduce GHG emissions in Korea at 50% based on 2005 levels by 2050 using a Low Carbon Path Calculator. They were classified in four different cases, which are high renewable, high nuclear, high CCS and mixed option scenarios. The objectives of this study are to compare scenarios in terms of GHG emissions, final energy, primary energy and electricity generation and examine the usefulness of that model in terms of identifying pathways towards a low carbon emission society. This model will enhance the understanding of the pathways toward a low carbon society and the level of the climate change policy for policy makers, stakeholders, and the public. This study can be considered as a reference for developing strategies in reducing GHG emissions in the long term.
With the increase of the production of energy from renewable, it becomes important to look at techniques to store this energy. Therefore, a single winding bearingless flywheel motor (SWBFM) specially for flywheel energy storage system is introduced. For the control system of SWBFM, coupling between the torque and the suspension subsystems exists inevitably. It is necessary to build a reasonable radial force mathematical model to precisely control SWBFM. However, SWBFM has twelve independently controlled windings which leads to high-order matrix transformation and complex differential calculation in the process of mathematical modeling based on virtual displacement method. In this frame, a Maxwell tensor modeling method which is no need the detailed derivation and complex theoretical computation is present. Moreover, it possesses advantages of universality, accuracy, and directness. The fringing magnetic path is improved from straight and circular lines to elliptical line and the rationality of elliptical line is verified by virtual displacement theory according to electromagnetic torque characteristics. A correction function is taken to increase the model accuracy based on finite element analysis. Simulation and experimental results show that the control system of SWBFM with radial force mathematical model based on Maxwell tensor method is feasible and has high precision.
This paper expands an analytical performance model of 802.11 to accurately estimate throughput and energy demand of 802.11-based wireless sensor network (WSN) when sensor nodes employ Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, one of block forward error correction (FEC) techniques. This model evaluates these two metrics as a function of the channel bit error rate (BER) and the RS symbol size. Since the basic recovery unit of RS codes is a symbol not a bit, the symbol size affects the WSN performance even if each packet carries the same amount of FEC check bits. The larger size is more effective to recover long-lasting error bursts although it increases the computational complexity of encoding and decoding RS codes. For applying the extended model to WSNs, this paper collects traffic traces from a WSN consisting of two TIP50CM sensor nodes and measures its energy consumption for processing RS codes. Based on traces, it approximates WSN channels with Gilbert models. The computational analyses confirm that the adoption of RS codes in 802.11 significantly improves its throughput and energy efficiency of WSNs with a high BER. They also predict that the choice of an appropriate RS symbol size causes a lot of difference in throughput and power waste over short-term durations while the symbol size rarely affects the long-term average of these metrics.
Hydrogen is attracting attention as an alternative energy source as an eco-friendly fuel without emitting environmental pollutants. In order to use hydrogen as an energy source, technologies such as hydrogen production and storage must be used, and new storage methods are being studied. In this study, the behavior of hydrogen in the storage tank were numerically studied under high-pressure hydrogen discharge conditions in a Type III hydrogen tank. Numerical results were compared with the experimental value and the results were quantitatively analyzed to verify the numerical implementation. With the results of pressure and temperature values under a given discharge condition, the Redich-Kwong gas model showed the adequate models with the smallest error between numerical and experimental results.
In this paper, enhanced stand-alone operation and development of Matlab/Simulink model of emergency diesel based hybrid energy system is presented. Simulations based on the remote community or islands were performed for PV-diesel-battery hybrid system. Modeling of PV-diesel-battery integrated system is done to perform under the solar radiation and load conditions on Matlab/Simulink platform. The models of diesel generator unit, battery energy storage system, PV and frequency-power control are developed and simulation studies have been carried out under various conditions using Matlab/Simulink and SimPowerSystem. It is demonstrated that the proposed system can provide reliable and good quality power to the customers in diesel synchronous generator-based hybrid energy systems.
The methodology and feasibility analysis model for small hydropower plant has been studied and developed. It consists of two main part, the performance prediction model to estimate the performance characteristics and economics anaysis model to evaluate economical characteristics for surveyed sites. The performance characteristics and feasibility assessment for surveyed sites were analyzed, using developed models. Also, primary design specifications such as design flowrate, capacity, load factor were estimated and discussed for surveyed sites in Dan-yang and feasibility was suggested through analyzing the investment, unit cost and payback period.
This paper is concerned with an optimization design of Incremental Granular Model(IGM) based Genetic Algorithm (GA) as an evolutionary approach. The performance of IGM has been successfully demonstrated to various examples. However, the problem of IGM is that the same number of cluster in each context is determined. Also, fuzzification factor is set as typical value. In order to solve these problems, we develop a design method for optimizing the IGM to optimize the number of cluster centers in each context and the fuzzification factor. We perform energy analysis using 12 different building shapes simulated in Ecotect. The experimental results on energy efficiency data set of building revealed that the proposed GA-based IGM showed good performance in comparison with LR and IGM.
