Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) is a well-known and effective power management technique. While there has been research on slack distribution, voltage allocation and other aspects of DVS, its effects on non-voltage-scalable devices has hardly been considered. A DC-DC converter plays an important role in voltage generation and regulation in most embedded systems, and is an essential component in DVS-enabled systems that scale supply voltage dynamically. We introduce a power consumption model of DC-DC converters and analyze the energy consumption of the system including the DC-DC converter. We propose an energy-optimal off-line DVS scheduling algorithm for systems with DC-DC converters, and show experimentally that our algorithm outperforms existing DVS algorithms in terms of energy consumption.
A cloud system has to deal with highly variable workloads resulting from dynamic usage patterns in order to keep the QoS within the predefined SLA. Aside from the aspects regarding services, another emerging concern is to keep the energy consumption at a minimum. This requires the cloud providers to consider energy and performance trade-off when allocating virtualized resources in cloud data centers. In this paper, we propose a resource provisioning approach based on dynamic thresholds to detect the workload level of the host machines. The VM selection policy uses utilization data to choose a VM for migration, while the VM allocation policy designates VMs to a host based on its service reputation. We evaluated our work through simulations and results show that our work outperforms non-power aware methods that don't support migration as well as those based on static thresholds and random selection policy.
The importance of the concept of safety culture has increased in the security of high-risk facility after Chernobyl accident in 1986. This paper elaborated the concept of safety culture and its main factors by Causal Loop Diagram. Due to the decline of safety culture, the occurrence of incidents and accidents require more and more corrective actions to the members of high-risk facilities and thereby increasing their workloads. Employees who must complete the task within the given time have to have time pressures and don't comply with the rules and procedures. Also, a schedule pressure is a big stress for employees, causing mistakes in precision work. In order to improve these problems, CLD of the safety culture in this paper suggests hiring more workers, re-allocation of given workloads and strengthen the learning, communication capabilities and safety leadership. In addition, the two real accident cases were analyzed to test the feasibility of the System Dynamic simulation model through the process of structuring the fault trees on the stationary black out accident in Kori unit 1 in South Korea and Kleen Energy power station explosion in US. The simulation results show that the various safety factors cause the serious accident combined with mechanical failure and safety culture will reduce the possibility of the accidents in these high-risk organizations. This simulation model can contribute to analyzing the impact of the organizational and human factors of safety culture and can provide the alternatives in high-risk facilities.
In this study, the last 10 years of news data on fine dust was collected and 80 topics are selected through LDA analysis. As a result, weather-related information made up the main words for the topic, and we can see that fine dust becomes a big issue below 10 degrees Celsius. The frequency of exposure to the media and the maximum concentration of fine dust are correlated with positive. Topics related to fine dust reduction measures and the government's comprehensive measures over the past decade, topics related to products such as air purifiers related to fine dust, topics related to policies protecting vulnerable people from fine dust, and topics on fine dust reduction through R&D were found to be major topics. Measures against fine dust as a social issue can be seen to be closely related to the government's policy.
This study identified key patents on U.S. underground water technology through patent network analysis. As a result, there were many technologies that used the technology to remove heavy metals to prevent contamination of groundwater. While patents between groundwater technology patents were in charge of intermediaries, the connectivity between groundwater technologies is not high. The patented technologies related to groundwater were largely distinguishable by pumping, monitoring, and decontamination. Monitoring includes techniques that enable identification of physical and biological properties, such as the type of contaminants, as well as geographic characteristics for analysis of groundwater flow, flow or water quality. Pollution purification technology refers to the process of physiochemical and biological purification for soil and groundwater. U.S. technology cases showed that the U.S. had high technology in water treatment area. And patent protection were also needed to cope with water shortages caused by climate change.

The "Hydrogen Economic Activation Road map" was announced in 2019, and hydrogen demand is expected to exceed 470,000 tons per year in 2022 and keep increasing. Under this circumstance, it has become important to understand the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with various hydrogen production pathways. In this study, the evaluation of life cycle GHG emissions regarding the hydrogen produced as by-product from coke oven gas (COG) in steel mill is conducted. To cover the possible range of operations, three literatures were reviewed and their data of inputs and outputs for the process were adopted for calculation. Life cycle inventories and emission factors were mostly referred to GaBi and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines, respectively. When there are multiple products from a single process, the energy allocation method was applied. Based on these sources and the assumptions, the life cycle emission values of COG-based hydrogen were found to be 3.8 to 4.7 kg/CO2-eq./kg-H2.

It is necessary to determine the current and future energy consumption by farm households for the rational specification of energy related policy in the Korean agricultural sector. Especially, It is important to identify the consumption by source of energy and by the crops. On the other hand, the world has tried to reduce the production of greenhouse gases and, in line with this, the Korean government established related legislations to contribute to this reduction (30% reduction in emissionsby 2020). The reduction target of the agricultural sector is specified as 5.2% of the national total. This study focuses on sampling design to determine the energy consumption and emission of greenhouse gases, and suggests several alternatives to improve the confidence level and to make a dent survey and estimation errors. The population for the energy consumption survey of the agricultural sector was derived from agricultural census data. In the case of commodities with high skewness, we cut the sample range to within the statistical significant range. The number of samples in each class is specified using the Neyman allocation method and 95% significance level. The estimation results are compared with the population to verify the statistical significance and several management methods of sampling errors are suggested.

The 7th education reform in 1997 has led changes in the way buildings were constructed and such changes drove educational facilities to steadily consume more energy every year. Also, these facilities take several years' estimated expenditure as well as the increased unit price of electricity into account when planning their annual operating budget. Such circumstances may adversely affect the establishment of their budget plan since improper allocation of operating costs could take place. To propose educational facilities' operating budget management plan on electrical energy consumption, this study developed a model that help oversee the facilities' consumption of electrical energy. For the model development, the primary core variables related to electrical energy factors from the aspects of surroundings, physics, policy, etc. were derived from taking both literature research and the characteristics of these facilities into account. The secondary core variables were then derived using the correlation analysis. Lastly, the electric energy use prediction model was developed by performing regression analysis based on the derived secondary core variables.
Recently, with the development of the 4th Industrial Revolution era and the popularization of technologies the maker movement is spreading worldwide in various ways for education, entrepreneurship, and solving social problems. This paper introduces a case of establishing and operating a maker space in Tanzania, East Africa, one of the developing countries. iTEC Tech-shop was established in the first half of 2018 at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha, Tanzania by Innovative Technology and Energy Center (iTEC), and has been operating for nearly two years. With the allocation of empty warehouse space from NM-AIST, physical facilities were established through the purchase and installation of equipment and hand tools. Based on the advice from Idea Factory of Seoul National University and Fab-Lab Seoul, iTEC Tech-shop operational system were established. Through a total of 7 technical workshops, iTEC Tech-shop provided training courses for about 180 local personnel. In addition, the smart Techshop test-bed project was promoted in order to improve the operation level along with securing sustainability of the Techshop. The case of the iTEC Tech-shop could be a useful case for institutions or organizations promoting the maker movement to developing countries.
Since national GHG reduction target by 2020 has been presented in Korea, the role of railroad has been reinforced within transport system due to the allocation of reduction target into sector. So, it is necessary to manage activity data systematically for the calculation of GHG emission in railroad. Now, the activity data of diesel consumption for NIR(National Inventory Report) are provided from oil supply and demand statistics. On the other hands, the activity data collected directly from railroad operating companies are used for GHG & Energy Target Management Act. This study aimed to assess the GHG emissions using two kinds of activity data related to the diesel consumption of railroad in 2009 and 2010. As a result, GHG emissions based on oil supply and demand statistics was 636 thousands ton $CO_{2e}$, but the activity data collected from railroad operating companies showed 649 thousands ton $CO_{2e}$ in 2009. Also, the gap of $CO_{2e}$ emission was increased in 2010. These trends were caused because oil supply and demand statistics included total diesel sales volume during 1 year and the activity data collected from railroad operating companies were the amount of diesel consumption only at railcar operation and maintenance step. In conclusion, it is important to develop the management and verification system of activity data with high reliability to substitute oil supply and demand statistics in railroad sector.
