In a pressurized heavy water reactor, following loss of the primary coolant, severe core damage would begin with the depletion of the liquid moderator, exposing the top row of internally-voided fuel channels to steam cooling conditions on the inside and outside. The uncovered fuel channels would heat up, deform and disassemble into core debris. Large inventories of water passively reduce the rate of progression of the accident, prolonging the time for complete loss of engineered heat sinks. The efficacy of available backup and ultimate heat sinks, available in a CANDU 6 reactor, in mitigating the consequences of a prolonged station blackout scenario was analysed using the MAAP4-CANDU code. The analysis indicated that the steam generator secondary side water inventory is the most effective heat sink during the accident. Additional heat sinks such as the primary coolant, moderator, calandria vault water and end shield water are also able to remove decay heat; however, a gradually increasing mismatch between heat generation and heat removal occurs over the course of the postulated event. This mismatch is equivalent to an additional water inventory estimated to be 350,000 kg at the time of calandria vessel failure. In the Enhanced CANDU 6 reactor ~2,040,000 kg of water in the reserve water tank is available for prolonged emergencies requiring heat sinks.

This work proposes a 15b 50MS/s CMOS pipeline ADC based on digital code-error calibration. The proposed ADC adopts a four-stage pipeline architecture to minimize power consumption and die area and employs a digital calibration technique in the front-end stage MDAC without any modification of critical analog circuits. The front-end MDAC code errors due to device mismatch are measured by un-calibrated back-end three stages and stored in memory. During normal conversion, the stored code errors are recalled for code-error calibration in the digital domain. The signal insensitive 3-D fully symmetric layout technique in three MDACs is employed to achieve a high matching accuracy and to measure the mismatch error of the front-end stage more exactly. The prototype ADC in a 0.18um CMOS process demonstrates a measured DNL and INL within 0.78LSB and 3.28LSB. The ADC, with an active die area of $4.2mm^2$, shows a maximum SNDR and SFDR of 67.2dB and 79.5dB, respectively, and a power consumption of 225mW at 2.5V and 50MS/s.
Feature normalization is a method to reduce the effect of environmental mismatch between the training and test conditions through the normalization of statistical characteristics of acoustic feature parameters. It demonstrates excellent performance improvement in the traditional Gaussian mixture model-hidden Markov model (GMM-HMM)-based speech recognition system. However, in a deep neural network (DNN)-based speech recognition system, minimizing the effects of environmental mismatch does not necessarily lead to the best performance improvement. In this paper, we attribute the cause of this phenomenon to information loss due to excessive feature normalization. We investigate whether there is a feature normalization method that maximizes the speech recognition performance by properly reducing the impact of environmental mismatch, while preserving useful information for training acoustic models. To this end, we introduce the mean and exponentiated variance normalization (MEVN), which is a compromise between the mean normalization (MN) and the mean and variance normalization (MVN), and compare the performance of DNN-based speech recognition system in noisy and reverberant environments according to the degree of variance normalization. Experimental results reveal that a slight performance improvement is obtained with the MEVN over the MN and the MVN, depending on the degree of variance normalization.
Intra-speaker variation, noise environments, and mismatch between training and test conditions are the major reasons for the speaker verification system unable to use it practically. In this study, we propose robust end-point detection algorithm, noise cancelling with the microphone property compensation technique, and inter-speaker discriminate technique by weighting cepstrum for robust speaker verification system. Simulation results show that the average speaker verification rate is improved in the rate of 17.65% with proposed end-point detection algorithm using LPC residue and is improved in the rate of 36.93% with proposed noise cancelling and microphone property compensation algorithm. The proposed weighting function for discriminating inter-speaker variations also improves the average speaker verification rate in the rate of 6.515%.

A significant portion (about 8% in human genome) of mammalian mRNA sequences contains AU(Adenine and Uracil) rich elements or AREs at their 3' untranslated regions (UTR). These mRNA sequences are usually stable. ARE motifs are assorted into three classes. The importance of AREs in biology is that they make certain mRNA unstable. We analyzed the occurrences of AREs and Alu, and propose a possible mechanism on how human mRNA could acquire and keep A REs at its 3' UTR originated from Alu repeats. Interspersed in the human genome, Alu repeats occupy 5% of the 3' UTR of mRNA sequences. Alu has poly-adenine (poly-A) regions at the end that lead to poly -thymine (poly-T) regions at the end of its complementary Alu. It has been discovered that AREs are present at the poly -T regions. In the all ARE's classes, 27-40% of ARE repeats were found in the poly -T region of Alu with mismatch allowed within 10% of ARE's length from the 3' UTRs of the NCBI's reference m RNA sequence database. We report that Alu, which has been reported as a junk DNA element, is a source of AREs. We found that one third of AREs were derived from the poly -T regions of the complementary Alu.
The Master-Slave manipulator is generally used as a remote handling device in the hot cell, in which the high level radio-active materials such as spent fuels are handled. This study describes a workspace mapping algorithm for a kinematically dissimilar master-slave system The algorithm provides the operator to guide the slave's end effector into unreachable regions which can appear due to the mismatch of workspace between the master and slave manipulator. A spaceball was used for the universal master device, and it can detect the slight fingertip force applied on the ball and also resolve the applied force. The spaceball device was also used to move 3D images instantaneously and simultaneou...
The analysis of thermally induced stresses in engineering structures is a very important and necessary task with respect to design and modeling of pressurized containers, heat exchangers, aircrafts segments, etc. to prevent them from failure and improve working conditions. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate elasto-plastic thermal stresses and deformations in a thin annular plate embedded into rigid container. To this end, analytical research devoted to mathematically and physically rigorous stress/strain analysis is performed. In order to evaluate the effect of logarithmic thermal gradients, commonly applied to structures which incorporate thin plate geometries, different thermal parameters such as temperature mismatch and varying constraint temperature were introduced into the model of elastic perfectly-plastic annular plate obeying the von Mises yield criterion with its associated flow rule. The results obtained may be used in sensitive to temperature differences aircraft structures where the thermal effects on equipment must be kept in mind.
The input and output impedances in a low voltage distribution system is one of the most important matters for power line communication because from the viewpoint of communication, the attenuation characteristic of the high frequency signals is greatly caused by impedance mismatch during sending and receiving. The frequency range is from 1MHz to 30MHz. Therefore, this paper investigates the input and output impedances in order to understand the characteristic of high frequency signals in the low voltage distribution system between a pole transformer and an end user. For power line communication, the model of Korea's low voltage distribution system is proposed in a residential area and then the low voltage distribution system is set up in a laboratory. In the low voltage distribution system, S parameters are measured by using a network analyzer. Finally, input and output impedances are calculated using S parameters.
The 5′-region of Potato virus X (PVX) RNA, which contains an AC-rich, single-stranded region and stem-loop structure 1 (SL1), affects RNA replication and assembly. Using Systemic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential enrichment (SELEX) and the electrophoretic mobility shift assay, we demonstrate that SL1 interacts specifically with tobacco protoplast protein extracts (S100). The 36 nucleotides that correspond to the top region of SL1, which comprises stem C, loop C, stem D, and the tetra loop (TL), were randomized and bound to the S100. Remarkably, the wild-type (wt) sequence was selected in the second round, and the number of wt sequences increased as selection proceeded. All of the selected clones from the fifth round contained the wt sequence. Secondary structure predictions (mFOLD) of the recovered sequences revealed relatively stable stem-loop structures that resembled SL1, although the nucleotide sequences therein were different. Moreover, many of the clones selected in the fourth round conserved the TL and C-C mismatch, which suggests the importance of these elements in host protein binding. The SELEX clone that closely resembled the wt SL1 structure with the TL and C-C mismatch was able to replicate and cause systemic symptoms in plants, while most of the other winners replicated poorly only on inoculated leaves. The RNA replication level on protoplasts was also similarly affected. Taken together, these results indicate that the SL1 of PVX interacts with host protein(s) that play important roles related to virus replication.
Background: Efficient gene editing technology is needed for successful knock-in. Homologous recombination (HR) is a major double-strand break repair pathway that can be utilized for accurately inserting foreign genes into the genome. HR occurs during the S/G2 phase, and the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) pathway is inextricably linked to HR to maintain HR fidelity. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of inhibiting MMR-related genes using CdCl2, an MMR-related gene inhibitor, on HR efficiency in HC11 cells. Methods: The mRNA and protein expression levels of MMR-related genes (Msh2, Msh3, Msh6, Mlh1, Pms2), the HR-related gene Rad51, and the NHEJ-related gene DNA Ligase IV were assessed in HC11 cells treated with 10 μM of CdCl2 for 48 hours. In addition, HC11 cells were transfected with a CRISPR/sgRNA expression vector and a knock-in vector targeting Exon3 of the mouse-beta casein locus, and treated with 10 μM cadmium for 48 hours. The knock-in efficiency was monitored through PCR. Results: The treatment of HC11 cells with a high-dose of CdCl2 decreased the mRNA expression of the HR-related gene Rad51 in HC11 cells. In addition, the inhibition of MMR-related genes through CdCl2 treatment did not lead to an increase in knock-in efficiency. Conclusions: The inhibition of MMR-related gene expression through high-dose CdCl2 treatment reduces the expression of the HR-related gene Rad51, which is active during recombination. Therefore, it was determined that CdCl2 is an inappropriate compound for improving HR efficiency.
