This paper suggests a new cipher mode of operation which can recover cryptographic synchronization. First, we study the typical cipher modes of operation, especially focused on cryptographic synchronization problems. Then, we suggest a statistical cipher-feedback mode of operation. We define the error sources mathmatically and simulate propagation errors caused by a bit insertion or bit deletion. In the simulation, we compare the effects of changing the synchronization pattern length and feedback key length. After that, we analyze the simulation results with the calculated propagation errors. finally. we evaluate the performance of the statistical cipher-feedback mode of operation and recommand the implementation considerations.

The security of all cryptographic algorithms and protocols is based on the confidentiality of secret keys. Key management mechanism is an indispensable part of the cryptographic system and this deals with the generation, exchange, storage, use, and replacement of keys. Within the key management mechanism there are key derivation functions (KDFs) which derive one or more keys from a master key. NIST specifies three families of PRF-based KDFs in SP 800-108. In this paper, we examine the difference of security models between the KDFs and the encryption modes of operations. Moreover we focus on the provable security of PRF-based KDFs according to input types of counters, and show that the counter and feedback modes of KDFs using XOR of counters are insecure, while these modes using concatenation of counters are secure.

Camellia was jointly developed by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation in 2000. Camellia specifies the 128-bit message block size and 128-, 192-, and 256-bit key sizes. In this paper, a modified round operation block which unifies a register setting for key schedule and a conventional round operation block is proposed. 16 ROMs needed for key generation and round operation are implemented using only 4 dual-port ROMs. Due to the use of a message buffer, encryption/decryption can be executed without a waiting time immediately after KA and KB are calculated. The suggested block cipher Camellia algorithm is designed using Verilog-HDL, implemented on Virtex4 device and operates at 184.898MHz. The designed cryptographic core has a maximum throughput of 1.183Gbps in 128-bit key mode and that of 876.5Mbps in 192 and 256-bit key modes. The cryptographic core of this paper is applicable to security module of the areas such as smart card, internet banking, e-commerce and satellite broadcasting.

This paper represents a forgery attack on new authenticated encryption mode $NAE^{[1]}$ which was proposed at JCCI 2003. NAE is a new authenticated encryption mode which is combined with CFB mode and CTR mode. And it provides confidentiality. In this paper, we show that it is possible to make a valid ciphertext-tag pair only by modifying a ciphertext.

In this paper a design of high performance cryptographic processor which implements AES Rijndael algorithm is described. To eliminate performance degradation due to round-key computation delay of conventional processor, the on-the-fly precomputation of round key based on modified round structure is adopted. And on-the-fly round key generator which supports 128, 192, and 256-bit key has modular structure. The designed processor has iterative structure which uses 1 clock cycle per round and supports three operation modes, such as ECB, CBC, and CTR mode which is a candidate for new AES modes of operation. The cryptographic processor designed in Verilog-HDL and synthesized using 0.251$\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS cell library consists of about 51,000 gates. Simulation results show that the critical path delay is about 7.5ns and it can operate up to 125Mhz clock frequency at 2.5V supply. Its peak performance is about 1.45Gbps encryption or decryption rate under 128-bit key ECB mode.

This paper describes an efficient hardware design of WiBro security processor (WBSec) supporting for the security sub-layer of WiBro wireless internet system. The WBSec processor, which is based on AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) block cipher algorithm, performs data oncryption/decryption, authentication/integrity, and key encryption/decryption for packet data protection of wireless network. It carries out the modes of ECB, CTR, CBC, CCM and key wrap/unwrap with two AES cores working in parallel. In order to achieve an area-efficient implementation, two design techniques are considered; First, round transformation block within AES core is designed using a shared structure for encryption/decryption. Secondly, SubByte/InvSubByte blocks that require the largest hardware in AES core are implemented using field transformation technique. It results that the gate count of WBSec is reduced by about 25% compared with conventional LUT (Look-Up Table)-based design. The WBSec processor designed in Verilog-HDL has about 22,350 gates, and the estimated throughput is about 16-Mbps at key wrap mode and maximum 213-Mbps at CCM mode, thus it can be used for hardware design of WiBro security system.

A symmetric block cryptosystem uses an identical cryptographic key at encryption and decryption processes. HIGHT cipher algorithm is 64-bit block cryptographic technology for mobile device that was authorized as international standard by ISO/IEC on 2010. In this paper, block cipher HIGHT algorithm is designed using Verilog-HDL. Four modes of operation for block cipher such as ECB, CBC, OFB and CTR are supported. When continuous message blocks of fixed size are encrypted or decrypted, the desigend HIGHT core can process a 64-bit message block in every 34-clock cycle. The cryptographic processor designed in this paper operates at 144MHz on vertex chip of Xilinx, Inc. and the maximum throughput is 271Mbps. The designed cryptographic processor is applicable to security module of the areas such as PDA, smart card, internet banking and satellite broadcasting.

In this paper CPLD design of cryptographic coprocessor which implements SEED algorithm is described. To satisfy trade-off between area and speed, the coprocessor has structure in which 1 round operation is divided into three subrounds and then each subround is executed using one clock. To improve clock frequency, online precomputation scheme for round key is used. To apply the coprocessor to various applications, four operating modes such as ECB, CBC, CFB, and OFB are supported. The cryptographic coprocessor is designed using Altera EPF10K100GC503-3 CPLD device and its operation is verified by encryption or decryption of text files through ISA bus interface. It consists of about 29,300 gates and performance of CPLD chip is about 44 Mbps encryption or decryption rate under 18 Mhz clock frequency and ECB mode.

PIPO lightweight block ciphers were announced in ICISC'20. In this paper, a single-block optimization implementation and parallel optimization implementation of PIPO lightweight block cipher ECB, CBC, and CTR operation modes are performed on a 32-bit RISC-V processor. A single block implementation proposes an efficient 8-bit unit of Rlayer function implementation on a 32-bit register. In a parallel implementation, internal alignment of registers for parallel implementation is performed, and a method for four different blocks to perform Rlayer function operations on one register is described. In addition, since it is difficult to apply the parallel implementation technique to the encryption process in the parallel implementation of the CBC operation mode, it is proposed to apply the parallel implementation technique in the decryption process. In parallel implementation of the CTR operation mode, an extended initialization vector is used to propose a register internal alignment omission technique. This paper shows that the parallel implementation technique is applicable to several block cipher operation modes. As a result, it is confirmed that the performance improvement is 1.7 times in a single-block implementation and 1.89 times in a parallel implementation compared to the performance of the existing research implementation that includes the key schedule process in the ECB operation mode.

In this paper, the block cipher algorithms, 3-DES(Triple Data Encryption Standard), AES(Advanced Encryption Standard), SEED, HASH(SHA-1), which are domestic and international standards, have been implemented as an integrated cryptographic engine for smart card applications. For small area and low power design which are essential requirements for portable devices, arithmetic resources are shared for iteration steps in each algorithm, and a two-level clock gating technique was used to reduce the dynamic power consumption. The integrated cryptographic engine was verified with ALTERA Excalbur EPXA10F1020C device, requiring 7,729 LEs(Logic Elements) and 512 Bytes ROM, and its maximum clock speed was 24.83 MHz. When designed by using Samsung 0.18 um STD130 standard cell library, the engine consisted of 44,452 gates and had up to 50 MHz operation clock speed. It was estimated to consume 2.96 mW, 3.03 mW, 2.63 mW, 7.06 mW power at 3-DES, AES, SEED, SHA-1 modes respectively when operating at 25 MHz clock. We found that it has better area-power optimized structure than other existing designs for smart cards and various embedded security systems.
