Methods: This study employed a qualitative research design. An interview was conducted with a mother whose newborn was hospitalized in the NICU, and the data were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological method. Results: Five main themes and 19 formulated meanings were indentified. The 5 themes were 'drowning in pain', 'just look outside the glass door', 'being a pillar', 'a deepening attachment', and 'prepare for nurturing with hope'. Conclusion: The results of this study provided an in-depth understanding of the experience of a mother with a newborn in the NICU. • This study was designed to compare mothers' beliefs of literacy development and home literacy environment and to explore how the children interacted with their mother during literacy activities and how they used the strategies to develop knowledge of literacy. The qualitative data was collected from multiple sources of naturalistic information and analyzed through triangulation of diverse methods including participant observations in the home, parental during literacy events, written logs kept by the mothers, the children's writing products, three emergent assessment forms, and photographs. The three preschoolers and their mothers provided different literacy experiences to support their children's emerging conventional literacy development. Child 1's mother highly valued the rich home literacy environment and the child 1's initiative interactions during literacy events. Child 3's home literacy context was very similar to her Montessori classroom's phonic approach and writing skills. Child 2 was provided with an inappropriate literacy environment at home through direct instruction and an emphasis on correct writing. All of the children were interested and attended to story. Child 1 interacted with her mother in expanded cycles as child's initiation, mother's clarification, and child's evaluation, compared with the child 2's simple cycle and the child 3's classroom-like cycle as mother's initiation, child's response, and mother's evaluation. The children and their mothers employed a number of diverse strategies to understand knowledge of literacy. Importantly parent education needs to emphasize the importance of playful one to one mother-child interaction, a functional holistic literacy environment., and strategies for expanding child's knowledge with parent as mediator.

(b) Closeness in teacher-child relationship was the strongest predictor for peer competence of children of employed mothers; maternal strategies promoting peer relationships was the strongest predictor for peer competence of children of unemployed mothers.

  • This study attempted to examine whether there is a relationship between parental stress and the accessible and mobilizable social capital of mothers raising young children by the mothers' employment status. The sample included 284 employed and 287 non-employed mothers who have children younger than the age of 5. Three research questions were as follows: 1) do the accessible and mobilizable social capital of mothers and parental stress differ by the mothers' employment status? 2) are the accessible and mobilizable social capital of employed mothers related to the level of parental stress? And finally, 3) are the accessible and mobilizable social capital of unemployed mothers related to the level of parental stress? The results showed that no significant difference was found in accessing social capital by the employment status of mothers. However, employed mothers were capable of mobilizing more social capital for childcare assistance than non-employed mothers. The parental stress of employed mothers was significantly lower than that of non-employed mothers. For employed mothers, their mobilizable social capital contributed to the reduction of parental stress. For non-employed mothers, their capability of accessing social capital significantly predicted lower levels of parental stress. These results indicate that the concept of social capital could be taken into consideration when explaining the parental stress of married mothers raising young children.

  • This study analysed the effect of mothers' work status on time use in child care and use of market child care services. There were two major questions: Do self-employed (and family worker without being paid) mothers have a flexible work schedule and so can they care her child(ren) well? If it is true, is the work status as self-employee related to non-market child care services? To answer these questions, 1,196 samples were selected from the Time Use Data of 1999, which had been administered by Korea National Statistical Office. Major results were as follows: First, a mother who is family workers without being paid made time to care children frequently more than wage earners. Second, according to regression analysis, mothers' work status was one of the important variables to explain child care activity frequency. Third, among categories of child caring ('physical caring', 'non-physical caring', and 'caring of the others'), mothers spent more frequently in 'caring of the others', and had higher probability to use market child care services. But the more frequently a mother made time in 'non-physical caring' for her child, the lower probability to choose market child care services. In conclusion, it was certain that self-employed mothers benefit from a flexible time schedule at work places. But the relationship of child care activity frequency with use of market child care services was inconsistent.

  • Objective: This study pays attention to types of parental depression and differences in happiness and self-esteem of children in each group of parents. Methods: This study employed the 10th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children. Cluster analysis, covariance analysis, and Bonferroni verification were performed on the data of 1,282 parents with 9-year-old children. Results: A total of four parental depression groups were categorized: 'both depressed,' 'mother depressed,' 'father depressed,' and 'not depressed.' Children of the not depressed group showed the highest psychological well-being among the four groups. Children of the mother mildly depressed group had lower scores in happiness and self-esteem than those of the father mildly depressed group. Conclusion/Implications: This study was a new attempt to categorize parental depression together, breaking away from individual approaches such as mother's depression, father's depression, and mother's and father's depression and complementary approaches between couples. When examining the impact of parental depression on children's psychological well-being, it is necessary to consider depression of the father and mother as a unit.
