The purpose of this study is to suggest the design guidance of education facilities by analysing Alvaro Siza's education facilities of which considered having idiosyncratic spatial characteristics. Focusing on the his planning of learning and transitional space of education facilities, this study aims at eliciting the spatial characteristics of his architecture. In doing so, this study tries to figure out his basic method of reification of his basic architectural concept which is articulated in learning space and transitional space of education facilities by introducing the boundary element and penetration of light in order to support student's learning activity and foster abundant cognitive experiences. Therefore, this study presents the feasible supplementary design method for future education facilities to be appropriate not just for quantitative factors, but for qualititative aspects such as user's psychological fulfillment, and emotional satisfaction.
Recently, as emotional elements have been applied to many fields including marketing, architecture, and design, new understanding on and interest in sensibility are emerging. The sensibility, as opposite meaning to the reason, has been excluded from academic object, and researches in sensibility have been diversified for the meaning, scope, application methods and even application target of sensibility without consistency. This study aims to redefine meaning of sensibility by examining documents related to sensibility, and to examine the features of sensibility in design, especially in space design. Consequently, sensibility was defined to function as a filter which deals with numerous stimulative informations intuitively and uniformly while human gives significance to a stimulus. According to the examination on apparent features of sensibility and studies of sensibility engineering, the sensibility occurs not only by visual and physical stimulus but also by meaningful stimulus, and both are known to have mutual influence on each other. In space design, spaces of many purposes can be categorized into the spaces of routine and out of routine following the empirical time, and physical stimulus and interesting factor pursued by these spaces are inversely proportional. This study is meaningful insofar as it enabled to explain interaction between physical stimulus, meaning, and other factors within sensibility as a comprehensive concept by redefining its concept.
Purpose - Recently the importance of green consumption and corporate social responsibility has been increasing, thereby enhancing the importance of green consumption space as well. The retail space, as a representative consumption space, is now consuming more energy by introducing bigger retail space, 24-hour operation, cutting-edge equipment, and manless checkout system. Especially for retailers, who are constantly interacting with consumers, not only the economic consideration but also the consumer experience via retail service and physical retail space is crucial for their success. Therefore, this study intends to understand the main factors of motivating consumer perception about green retail space. In addition, we further investigate the mediating and moderating variables to encourage revisit intention and green retail space image. Research design, data, and methodology - In order to test our hypotheses with two models, we conducted a survey using questionnaires. In model 1, 356 respondents were surveyed to determine whether consumers' green attitudes and behaviors enhance environmentally friendly perception on retail space properties. In model 2, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 69 consumers who have experience in green retail space. Questionnaire surveys were conducted with on-line panels in Korea and analyzed using regression model and Hayes' PROCESS macro. Results - We found that consumers with green attitude put more importance on the attributes of green retail space. Also, the utility of the green retail space was found to be significant in emotional and social benefits. And, the consumers, who perceived the importance of green retail space, show higher revisit intentions. The emotional and social utilities have significant positive effects on revisit intention through green retail space image. Conclusions - This study demonstrates that a green retail space can induce positive consumer utility, thereby increasing green retail space image and revisit intention. Thus, in order to increase the image and revisit, retailers should communicate green messages with consumers, enhance green attributes of retail space, and target green consumers. To do so, we suggest that various marketing efforts such as publicity and education are needed to appeal experiential green products and retail space to consumers.
The purpose of this study is to propose how the interior of the child psychiatric therapy Environment should be designed according to different problems that children have. For the purpose, this research has been conducted with a literature review and an empirical survey. The subjects of the survey were 100 children, 58 male and 42 female, who were using child psychiatric therapy centers located in Busan. Findings are as follows: (1) Children with behavior problem($C_b$) showed a significantly higher satistaction with the entrance and the information in a given child psychiatric therapy space than children with emotional problem ($C_e$) did. (2) Spatial attitude of $C_e$ and $C_b$ were significantly differed. (3) Colors that were being preferred by $C_e$ were cold colors, for example, blue and indigo. While, $C_b$ were preferring warm colors such as red and yellow. (4) There was difference in the image of a entrance and classrooms at the child psychiatric therapy center that children had in mind, the two groups of children were quite differently feeling about the size and noise of the therapy space.
This research is based on the environmental psychology model of Albert Mehrabian & JAMES a. Russell. The purpose of this research is to search a method of planning a spatial image improving the degree of access that is audience's dependent response to a display space image of a museum for children. A museum for children is the place for education with experience and its main audience is children and parents. It indicates with a basis of the environmental psychology model that a designer needs to consider the emotional response of children and parents in designing the space. The space design starts from a plan of space image that is delivered to audience through the five senses. Image on the space means visual image as people acquire information mostly through the sense of sight. Visual image consists of shape, the feel of a material, and color that is the most influential factor to the sensibility of audience. Therefore, firstly, this research measures the degree of audience's approach and avoidence on image of display space. In addition, this research suggests the improvement method by analyzing differences on the access of each space and audience based on visual image. Secondly, four factors are extracted through factor analysis based on the result of adjective survey result.
This study investigated composition elements and estimation of image in lobby from user viewpoint that is the central space of local cultural institution, and spectator mainly utilizes. Progress process of study develops investigation device including literature investigation, professional panel and lobby space image measurement tool through on-the-spot probe and, executed supporting research to spectator. As the result of the study, first, lobby space image exerts absolute effect to local cultural institution image-building, and is grasped on constituent that floor, ceiling, entrance and lighting and decoration is important in image-building of lobby space. Second, the image of the important lobby space was grasped in order of convenient image(M = 3.98) bright image(M = 3.87), and cozy image(M = 3.80). Third, the results on investigating semantic structure of the lobby image, emotional factor, styling factor, spatial factor, and peculiar factor are composed of important factors that decides image of lobby space. Fourth, as the result of image analysis for lobby space, the degree of satisfaction for the local cultural institution was entirely low against the importance. In particular, the image for convenience, individuality, locality and dignity was not sufficient in all the three places. Therefore, lobby design of local cultural institution shall also suggest more various lobby space image from culture oriented viewpoint.
The communication environment made by digital technologies has made it possible to exchange information and deliver messages fast and easily among people of various classes in virtual space beyond time and space. Net-generation, who is accustomed to this virtual space, couldn't be satisfied with the linear text-oriented language any more, and began to make signs by use of computers in order to differentiate itself from others and to express its desires. Among the signs, emoticon created by joint of popular culture and digital communication centering around young generation is a new visual sign and emotional sign that can deliver a sender's feelings contained in a message. This paper has studied social phenomena, their relationships with emoticon and background of its creation through documentary review of media development, changes in the communication environment and popular culture. Furthermore, it has analyzed the meaningful action and roles of emoticon as a sign in terms of semiotics and also, studied a possibility of using emoticon as a new emotional sign. The study results say that emoticon can play the roles of a non-linguistic sign just like general signs that make mutual exchange through meaningful action, and also that it can be used to effectively deliver messages not only in virtual space, but also in advertising, posters, magazines and CI. However, emoticon is better at emotional expressions yet than other textual signs or visual signs, but in order to position itself as a universal and popular sign, emotional expressions should be clear, any difference in understanding messages should be removed, and message delivery should be more efficient.
The use of environmentally friendly finishing materials allows us to create a space where we can feel nature and to have stability and peace in the city center. In this paper, we examined the sensitivity of people to the three café spaces where wooden finishing materials are used in the space elements that change according to people's demands for environmentally friendly space due to pollution of living environment. First, we examined the wood and finishing materials and emotional vocabulary through literature review and previous research. Second, the values of L *, a *, b* and sR, sG and sB values were extracted by using a line spectrophotometer (Ci6X). Third, we conducted a 7 - point scale questionnaire based on the extracted 13 pairs of emotional vocabulary. Using SPSS 21, frequency analysis by descriptive statistics, crossover analysis by visiting purpose and intention, and emotional lexical factor analysis were performed. Through the study, the following points were found. First, CB (The Coffee Bean), SB (Starbucks) and HS (Hollys Coffee) showed differences in CB (65%), SB (40%) and HS (37%) in the spatial analysis. Second, CB gave color similar to the color of wall and furniture wood, but HS changed the color or brightness of wood finishing color of furniture. HS or SB showed favorable use of wood color scheme. Third, SB (26.3%) and HS (19.7%) were selected by taste. Fourth, there were differences in the items of CB, 'local-exotic' and SB 'dark-bright' in the factor value. The use of wood finishing materials differed in the atmosphere evaluation depending on the spatial factors and the color of the furniture. However, in this study, there are many factors that are insufficient in the accuracy of the ratio of the applied wood finishing material to the space element and the amount of the survey. If we further study the evaluation of emotional image according to the ratio of wood finishing materials, we think that it is necessary to study now that interest in environmentally friendly is increasing.
Today, people are bombarded with information, high-technology and multimedia. With that in mind, museum can no longer attract visitor with traditional concept, so it must find some solution or stimulation to attract their attention back. New museum is becoming a experimental space for new culture, new education, and most of all a place to fulfill one's satisfaction of life. Over the past centuries, Guggenheim Foundation has done a great job in providing place for art and place to get emotional stimulation. Out of all of their museums, Frank L. Wright's Solomon R. Guggenheim in New York and frank O. Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao had most unique character yet share similar feature to be recognized as the architectural landmark of the 20th & 21st century Although there are close to 50 years of gap between two museums, their unique, attractive, site-specific, emotional value comes from the two most innovative architect of the past and present century. For Wright the Guggenheim was his last project but it had one of the greatest impact on his career and for Gehry the museum gave him confidence that anything is possible. This study will focus on the spatial organization as well as the architectural formation of both museum to compare and analyze. The goal of the research is to give fundamental data which will reveal emotional elements as well as concepts from each work. The content of this research will mainly focused on their architectural philosophy and it will reveal their concept on human emotion as well as the characteristics of the spatial organization. The result of the study will be a valuable reference for people designing art & cultural facilities in the future.
This paper is a research about the expression and characteristics of sense space by a phenomenological approach through body from an anthropocentric point of view. The phenomenological expression elements of sense space have been abstracted by putting the characteristics of body perception into shape through the phenomenological approach. This research aims to provide the expression and characteristics of sense space that can be applied by phenomenological elements of emotional expression, and analyze their application level by phenomenological body perception in space through corresponding examples. As a result of this research, the expressions of sense space approach - such as migration of moving lines, reiteration and segmentation of region, spatial flexibility, transferal of sense, stimulation of combined senses, symbolic abstraction of memory, perception of environment and space, time by light, phenomenal water space, time expression by surrounding environments etc. - and the characteristics of sense space according to each expression have been obtained through the phenomenological expression elements in sense space such as expansive perception by consecutive scenes, spatial and sensory experience, embodiment of place, phenomenal change by time. It aims to grope for a new approach and possibility to the embodiment and expression of sense space through the expression of sense space approach based on the phenomenological body perception.
