A Study on the Functional Unit Trend of Carbon Dioxide Emission in the Construction Materials between 2000, 2003 and 2005 (건축재료의 이산화탄소 배출원단위 변화추이연구)

  • This study aimed at analyzing the trend of carbon dioxide emission for direct and indirect areas by using inter industry relations table between 2000, 2003 and 2005 in the key building materials and components. Results of this study are as follows; First, the material and components for this study was selected in 20 industries of products such as sand, gravel, cement, concrete articles, rebar, and steel bar. Second, among the 20 selected key building materials, the group with the highest carbon-dioxide emission was shown in ready-mixed concrete, concrete articles, and primary aluminum goods. Third, as a result of analyzing the changes to the units of carbon dioxide emission according to passage of time, the number of items which is changed in such as sustained increase or decrease over time was insignificant in carbon-emission change trend.

Trend of exhaust emission control of diesel engine vehicles in Korea (국내 경유자동차 배출물 규제동향)

  • This short report describes the trend of exhaust emission control of the diesel engine vehicles in Korea, which originally was motivated from the newly proposed Emission Control Regulation of Diesel Engine Vehicles possible to be activated in 1991 by Korean Environmental Protection Agency. This short survey report has been prepared by the special working group of The Korea Society of Automotive Engineers (KSAE) on this particular subject. This report includes (1) estimation of portions of contribution of diesel engine vehicle emission to total air pollution, (2) comparison of proposals of new articles/regulations/laws in Korea with those of other selected countries such as USA, European countries, and Japan, (3) comparison of vehical emission control regulations in Korea with those in other selected countries, (4) technical aspects of possibilities of reduction of diesel engine vehicle emissions, (5) additional administrational aspects of technology development program, (6) social impact resulted from the severe emission control regulation on diesel engine vehicles, and (7) proposals, prepared by the special working group of the KSAE, on the emission control regulation of diesel engine vehicles, which can possibly bring better cleaner air released from the air pollution resulted from diesel engine exhaust emissions in real sense with minimal financial contribution, with optimal technological efforts, with less social impacts, within five to ten year period.

  • Diesel engines are the major sources of pollutants in the cities and each country is trying to enforce their emission regulations to reduce the diesel emissions. Expecially Commercial diesel engines have large displacement and they are the major sources of diesel emissions in the cities. This paper introduces the major countries' Diesel Engine Regulations and explains the emission reduction technologies that are currently applied and will be applied in the future.

An investigation and forecast on CO2 emission of China: Case studies of Beijing and Tianjin

  • $CO_2$ emission is increasingly focused by public. Beijing and Tianjin are conceived to be a new economic point of growth in China. However, both of them are suffering serious environmental stress. In order to seek for the effect of socioeconomic factors on the $CO_2$ emission of this region, a novel methodology -symbolic regression- is adopted to investigate the relationship between $CO_2$ emission and influential factors of Beijing and Tianjin. Based on this method, $CO_2$ emission models of Beijing and Tianjin are built respectively. The models results manifested that Beijing and Tianjin own different $CO_2$ emission indicators. The RMSE of models in Beijing and Tianjin are 255.39 and 603.99, respectively. Further analysis on indicators and forecast trend shows that $CO_2$ emission of Beijing expresses an inverted-U shaped curve, whilst Tianjin owns a monotonically increasing trend. From analytical results, it could be argued that the diversity rooted in different development orientation and the mixture of different natural and industrial environment. This research further expands the investigation on $CO_2$ emission of Beijing and Tianjin region, and can be used for reference in the study of carbon emissions in similar regions. Based on the investigation, several policy suggestions are presented.

Greenhouse Gas and Pollutant Emission from Light-Duty Vehicles Regarding the Relative Positive Acceleration (주행패턴의 상대 가속도에 따른 중소형 자동차의 온실가스 및 대기오염물질 배출 특성)

  • Although driving patterns strongly influence greenhouse gas and air pollutant emission rate from light duty vehicles, emission measurements have been mainly based on chassis dynamometer testing with one standard driving pattern. And there has been limited work on quantifying the independent effect of driving parameters on emission rate because of multidimensional nature of real-world driving pattern. The objective of this study is to obtain the quantitative effect of relative positive acceleration (RPA) on vehicle emission rate. RPA has been used to define the occurrence of acceleration demanding large amounts of power in certain driving distance and shown to be a significant affecting parameter for real-world emission rate. 40 driving patterns have been developed with fixed driving parameters to investigate independent effect of RPA. For the same values of average vehicle speed and power, the trend in carbon dioxide emission rate and fuel consumption with respect to RPA is very clear. Emission rate of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter also increase with respect to RPA, but the trend is less clear. Carbon dioxide emission from diesel vehicle appear to be more affected by high accelerations compared to that from gasoline vehicle because of high intake air restriction during acceleration caused by turbocharger and intercooler. The results have implications for the possible reduction of environmental effects through better traffic planning and management, driver education and car design.

Estimation of Mercury Emission from Major Sources in Annex D of Minamata Convention and Future Trend (국내 비의도적 주요 배출원의 지역별 수은 대기 배출량 산정 및 미래 활동도 변화와 최적가용기술 적용 시 배출량 추이)

  • This study discusses the present status of mercury emission and distribution from major anthropogenic sources in Korea and the future trend of mercury emission by activity changes and application of BATs. Atmospheric mercury emission from major anthropogenic sources based on Annex D of Minamata convention was estimated to around 4.89 tonne in 2012. Emission ratios of cement clinker production, coal-fired power plant, waste incineration and non-ferrous metal smelting were 68.68%, 24.75%, 6.29% and 0.28%, respectively. High mercury emission regions were characterized by the presence of cement clinker production facilities and coal-fired power plants. Prediction of future activities was carried out by linear regression of the previous year data. The (total) mercury emission was estimated to decrease up to 48% Under the scenario of BATs to be applied and the change of future activities. Emissions from coal-fired powerplants and cement clinkers were expected to decrease significantly.

Evaluation of Emission Reduction Program for In-use Diesel Vehicles Using PM10 Concentrations of Road-side and Background Monitoring Network (도로변 및 배경농도 측정망 PM10 자료를 이용한 노후 운행경유차 배출가스 저감사업 효과 해석)

  • Emission reduction program for in-use diesel vehicles (ERPDV) has been enacted since 2004 over the Seoul metropolitan area, and diesel emission reduction is forced to fulfill this regulation. This study was performed to evaluate the ERPDV using $PM_{10}$ concentrations of both road-side monitoring and national background network during the period of 2004-2010. In order to assess the pure road emission, we first eliminated the long range transport effect by deducting the trend of annual national background concentrations from the road-side $PM_{10}$ concentrations, and then analyzed the time series of the resultant $PM_{10}$ concentrations over Seoul metropolitan area. The annual rates of variations of road-side $PM_{10}$ with the deduction of trend of background level show -3.2, +0.4, and -2.4 ${\mu}g/m^3$/year, in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyonggi province, respectively. There are steadily decreasing trend in Seoul with all of statistic parameters such as mean, mediam, 5%ile, 10%ile, 25%ile, 75%ile, 90%ile, and 95%ile concentrations. Incheon shows some fluctuations with positive with no significant trend, and Gyonggi province shows overall decreasing but not consistent. Student-t test shows 95% significant level of ERPDV effect in Seoul, but there exists no significant level greater than 90% in both Incheon, and Kyonggi province. Total annual averaged trend over the whole Seoul metropolitan area is estimated to lie in approximately $-2.9{\mu}g/m^3$/year in this study, implying the intimate involvement of ERPDV to a large extent. This is also suggesting that the further research cost-effectiveness of ERPDV with consideration of the long range transport process would be needed over the Seoul metropolitan area.
