  • The existing embedded tester used TCP and shared file system for log processing. In addition, the existing processing method was treated as 1-N structure. This method wastes resources of the tester for exception handling. We implemented a log processing message layer that can be distributed by messaging system. And we compare the transmission method using the message layer and the transmission method using TCP and the shared file system. As a result of comparison, transmission using the message layer showed higher transmission bandwidth than TCP. In the CPU usage, the message layer showed lower efficiency than TCP, but showed no significant difference. It can be seen that the log processing using the message layer shows higher efficiency.

  • The SPARTAN-3E development kit is equipped with an FPGA which holds 500 thousand logic gates and a bus system platform using MicroBlaze microprocessor system. This kind of embedded systems can be used to gather information from sensor nodes and send over to the main server periodically through the network gateway, using the microprocessor-based embedded system, so that edlers living alone under sensor coverage can send their moving information and can be applied to get help in the event of emergency situations. In this paper, we designed a simple embedded system based on a CPU and flash memories using such FPGAs which can be used to monitor those elderlies living alone. The developed hardware system can be directly combined with the web-based elders-living-alone monitoring system, making the system more efficient.

  • Recently TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) technology, which processes TCP/IP on a network adapter instead of the host CPU, has become an important approach to reduce TCP/IP processing overhead in the host CPU. There have been two approaches to implementing TOE: software TOE, in which TCP/IP is processed by an embedded processor on a network adapter; and hardware TOE, in which all TCP/IP functions are implemented by hardware. This paper proposes a hybrid TOE that combines software and hardware functions in the TOE. In the hybrid TOE, functions that cannot have guaranteed performance on an embedded processor because of heavy load are implemented by hardware. Other functions that do not impose as much load are implemented by software on embedded processors. The hybrid TOE guarantees network performance near that of hardware TOE and it has the advantage of flexibility, because it is easy to add new functions or offload upper-level protocols of TCP/IP. In this paper, we developed a prototype board with an FPGA and an ARM processor to implement a hybrid TOE prototype. We implemented the hardware modules on the FPGA and the software modules on the ARM processor. We also developed a coprocessing mechanism between the hardware and software modules. Experimental results proved that the hybrid TOE prototype can greatly reduce the load on a host CPU and we analyzed the effects of the coprocessing mechanism. Finally, we analyzed important features that are required to implement a complete hybrid TOE and we predict its performance.

  • Guest operating systems running over the virtual machines share a variety of resources. Since CPU is allocated in a time division manner it consequently leads them to having the unknown physical time. It is not regarded as a serious problem in the server virtualization fields. However, it becomes critical in embedded systems because it prevents guest OS from executing real time tasks when it does not occupy CPU. In this paper we propose a hypercall to register a timer service to notify the timer request related real time. It enables hypervisor to schedule a virtual machine which has real time tasks to execute, and allows guest OS to take CPU on time to support real time. The following experiment shows its implementation on Xen-Arm and para-virtualized Linux. We also analyze the real time performance with response time of test application and frames per second of Mplayer.

  • Recently, an increasing number of embedded processors such as ARM Mali begin to support GPGPU programming frameworks, such as OpenCL. Thus, GPGPU technologies that have been used in PC and server environments are beginning to be applied to the embedded systems. However, many embedded systems have different architectural characteristics compare to traditional PCs and low-power consumption and real-time performance are also important performance metrics in these systems. In this paper, we implement a parallel AES cryptographic algorithm for a modern embedded GPU using OpenCL, a standard parallel computing framework, and compare performance against various baselines. Experimental results show that the parallel GPU AES implementation can reduce the response time by about 1/150 and the energy consumption by approximately 1/290 compare to OpenMP implementation when 1000KB input data is applied. Furthermore, an additional 100 % performance improvement of the parallel AES algorithm was achieved by exploiting the characteristics of embedded GPUs such as removing copying data between GPU and host memory. Our results also demonstrate that higher performance improvement can be achieved with larger size of input data.

  • This paper proposes the real time lip reading method in the embedded environment. The embedded environment has the limited sources to use compared to existing PC environment, so it is hard to drive the lip reading system with existing PC environment in the embedded environment in real time. To solve the problem, this paper suggests detection methods of lip region, feature extraction of lips, and awareness methods of phonetic words suitable to the embedded environment. First, it detects the face region by using face color information to find out the accurate lip region and then detects the exact lip region by finding the position of both eyes from the detected face region and using the geometric relations. To detect strong features of lighting variables by the changing surroundings, histogram matching, lip folding, and RASTA filter were applied, and the properties extracted by using the principal component analysis(PCA) were used for recognition. The result of the test has shown the processing speed between 1.15 and 2.35 sec. according to vocalizations in the embedded environment of CPU 806Mhz, RAM 128MB specifications and obtained 77% of recognition as 139 among 180 words were recognized.

  • On mobile devices, image sequences are widely used for multimedia applications such as computer vision, video enhancement, and augmented reality. However, the real-time processing of mobile devices is still a challenge because of constraints and demands for higher resolution images. Recently, heterogeneous computing methods that utilize both a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU) have been researched to accelerate the image sequence processing. This paper deals with various optimizing techniques such as parallel processing by the CPU and GPU, distributed processing on the CPU, frame buffer object, and double buffering for parallel and/or distributed tasks. Using the optimizing techniques both individually and combined, several heterogeneous computing structures were implemented and their effectiveness were analyzed. The experimental results show that the heterogeneous computing facilitates executions up to 3.5 times faster than CPU-only processing.

  • Recently, Open Computing Language (OpenCL) has been proposed to provide a framework that supports heterogeneous computing platforms. By using an OpenCL framework, digital communication systems can support various protocols in a unified computing environment to achieve both high portability and high performance. This article introduces a parallel software decoder of Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes for China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB) on a heterogeneous platform. Each step of LDPC decoding has different parallelization characteristics. In this paper, steps suitable for task-level parallelization are executed on the CPU, and steps suitable for data-level parallelization are processed by the GPU. To improve the performance of the proposed OpenCL kernels for LDPC decoding operations, explicit thread scheduling, loop-unrolling, and effective data transfer techniques are applied. The proposed LDPC decoder achieves high performance by using heterogeneous multi-core processors on a unified computing framework.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a method for installing strain gauges on moving, lubricating oil-filled, and sealed parts, such as drive shafts of equipment, including construction machinery. A measuring device was constructed using an embedded CPU and an IoT sensor to measure the strain of the strain gauge, which allowed for the measurement of axial torque and axial force, and subsequent analysis. To verify the performance of the developed device, the axial torque and axial force of the forklift were measured during operation using a strain gauge attached to the inside of the drive shaft. This study confirmed the possibility of measuring and analyzing the strain of a moving part, such as the inside of a drive shaft, which is sealed and filled with hydraulic oil.
