Objective: Qianbei-Pockmarked goats are affected by a disorder locally referred to as 'Ruanguzheng Disorder', which is characterized by emaciation, lameness, muscular relaxation, stiffness of the extremities, and abnormal curvatures of the long bones. Our objective was to determine the relationship between the disorder and phosphorus deficiency. Methods: Tissue samples were collected from affected and healthy animals, while soil and herbage samples were collected from affected and healthy pastures. Biochemical parameters were determined using an automatic biochemical analyzer (OLYMPUS AU 640, Olympus Optical Co., Tokyo, Japan). Mineral contents in soil, forage, and tissue were determined using a Perkin-Elmer AAS5000 atomic absorption spectrophotometer (Perkin-Elmer, Norwalk, CT, USA). Results: The results showed that phosphorus contents in herbages from affected pastures were markedly lower than those from healthy areas (p<0.01), and the ratio of calcium to phosphorus in the affected herbages was 12.93:1. The phosphorus contents of wool, blood, tooth, and bone from affected animals were also markedly lower than those from healthy animals (p<0.01). Serum phosphorus values in affected animals were much lower than those in healthy animals, while serum alkaline phosphatase values from affected animals were markedly higher than those from healthy animals (p<0.01). Inorganic phosphorus values from affected animals were approximately half of that in the control group. Supplementation of disodium hydrogen phosphate prevented and cured the disorder. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that Ruanguzheng disorder in Qianbei-Pockmarked goats is primarily caused by phosphorus deficiencies in herbage due to fenced pastures and natural habitat fragmentation.
A monitoring was performed to survey the mortalities that had occurred in the aquaculture farms of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) in South Korea from 2015 to 2017. The indirect inquiry for entire farms and the sample survey for selected farms were carried out. The aquatic organism disease inspectors, who have a national license for the diagnosis and prevention of aquatic organism diseases and a have close relationship with the farms, investigated the rates and causes of mortalities according to the standard manual. The mortality rate by sample survey of farms in 2015, 2016, and 2017 were 24.78% (Chunnam: 17.86%, Jeju: 28.69), 30.19% (Chunnam: 24.45%, Jeju: 32.65), and 21.59% (Chunnam: 10.57%, Jeju: 26.00%), respectively. The major cause of mortality was scuticociliatosis, and the mortality caused by viral hemorrhagic septicemia and emaciation disease (Jeju) were also high. Our results can contribute to effective establishment prevention of epidemics system and acquired status as a disease-cleansing country.

In recent years, myxosporean infection from the cultured olive flounders Paralichthys olivaceus, have been frequently observed in Jeju island, South Korea. This study aimed to compare histopathological and molecular-biological methods of examining myxosporean infection from these flounders. Samples were obtained from affected individuals exhibiting emaciation or abdominal distention and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) indicative of Parvicapsular anisocaudata, Enteromyxum leei and Kudoa septempunctata were initiated. Histopathological examination were conducted with H&E stained tissue sections, and then in-situ hybridization (ISH) reaction were processed with selected sections using P. anisocaudata, E. leei, K. septempunctata and Scuticociliate probes. Renal and intestinal tissue degeneration were common symptoms associated with all samples. Sever glomerular and renal tubular degeneration were evident, as were intestinal epithelial desquamation and spore formation in the epithelial cells. The results of conventional PCR analysis and ISH reactions revealed differences, and we suspect that various microparasites may have been associated with the symptoms manifested.

Background: There are few studies that have reported on the pharmacokinetic(PK) disposition of fluoroquinolones in patients with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis(MDR-Tb), even though fluoroquinolones are frequently co-prescribed to those patients. In this study, the PK disposition of ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone, was evaluated in patients with MD R -Tb. Methods: Twenty patients with MDR-Tb were given 2nd line Tb drugs including ofloxacin (300mg twice a day), prothionamide, cycloserine, para-aminosalicylic acid, kanamycin, and streptomycin. The patients were grouped according to their body mass index(BMI) as an index of emaciation (group A : 18.5$\leq$BMI <23, group B : BMI < 18.5). Blood samples were serially drawn and urine samples were collected upto 24 hours after the last dose of those drugs at steady state (over 1 month). The ofloxacin concentrations were determined using HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography). Results: The AUC of ofloxacin in group B was greater than that in group A ($31.4{\pm}8.9{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}h$ vs. $24.1{\pm}6.2{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}h$)(Check the symbols), (p<0.05). The total clearance(Cl/F) of ofloxacin was $0.16{\pm}0.03$ L/h/kg in group A, and $0.14{\pm}0.03$ L/h/kg in group B. The half-lives of ofloxacin in two groups were similar (group A : $5.3{\pm}0.8$ hours, group B : $5.7{\pm}0.9$ hours). In addition, the other PK parameters in two groups were also similar. Conclusions: The pharmacokinetics of ofloxacin in patients with MDR-Tb appears to be comparable with those of normal subjects, and the extent of emaciation appears to have an influence on the pharmacokinetics of ofloxaicn in chronic debilitated MDR-Tb patients.
The Full-length examination of the femur sometimes does not show all of the femur because of the limited width in collimator and size of detectors although it is located in the diagonal direction. Aim of this study is to identify usefulness of the method of combining images which obtained from two radiographic images containing the femoral head and condyle respectively. Our group interviewed 30 radiological technologists who used both palliative DR method and SM method in their examinations of the femur of patients who were carried to the emergency rooms in Gwang-ju city from August 2007 to November 2009. We evaluated twenty images according to the contraction of femoral neck, turning of knee joints and inclusion of the femur. The examination were performed by two radiologists and six radiological technologists who have more than ten years of career. The results are as follows: SM method was graded with higher score for examination time, number of examiners, emaciation, retake and patients' discomfort (p< 0.001) while the. SM method was scored higher than the palliative DR method in the palliative DR method for examination of long bone.

The purpose of this study is the develop a questionnaire for measuring Yin-Deficiency and examine the reliability and validity for its' value as a barometer for evaluating Yin-Deficiency. Questionnaire was developed according to the symptoms of Yin-Deficiency suggested in the 'Standardization of diagnostic terms and requirements of Korean Medicine', With and as a reference, each symptom has been worked on to be put on the questionnaire. Visual analogue scales(VAS) was used as a barometer for measuring frequency of manifestation of symptoms. A study was performed to measure validity and reliability of the final questionnaire for analysis. reliability of YinDQ was measured by Cronbach's alpha coefficient and test-retest method. This study utilized factor analysis and clinical validity for evaluation of validity. For the purpose of decreasing the amount of data-the number of factors, and at the same time minimize the loss of information factor analysis was performed Component factors were extracted using Principal Component Analysis. This study evaluated the clinical validity for examination of difference between the normal group and the patient group. Evaluation on the's internal consistency showed strong internal consistency with value of 0.8615. reliability from test-rest with three-week interval, followed by comparisons of the correlation coefficient and mean values of each item between the two. The Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.54-0.79. By factor analyse two factors with Eigen value of greater than 2.2 were selected. Factor 1 consists of items of 'irritable fever on the five Hearts', 'flushing of the zygomatic region in the afternoon', 'tidal fever', 'night sweats', and 'dryness on the mouth or the throat'. Factor two consists of items of 'emaciation', 'dizziness', 'insomnia', 'decreased amount of urine with yellowish color', and 'constipation'. The comparison between the patient group and the normal group showed significant differences for every ten questions. The results implies that YinDQ is a barometer with sufficient reliability and validity. The questionnaire for Yin-Deficiency may not be enough to replace the specific differential diagnosis by a doctor of Oriental medicine. Nevertheless, it can be effectively utilized as an assisting method in consultation or a method of measuring the degree of Yin-Deficiency in a group.

This study regarded irregular life styles such as nigh-shifts as contrary to the norm advised in the rules of Yang-saeng to analyze the problems brought about in relation to the concept of 'Yin-deficiency syndrome'. Yin-deficiency survey was given to sales workers on a big shopping mall in Seoul to compare the measurements of daytime workers to those of nigh-shift workers. The measurement of complaining symptoms related to Yin-deficiency of daytime workers and night-shift workers were compared, In comparison of the daytime workers and the night-shift workers, night-shift workers showed higher measurements than the daytime workers in the item of irritable fever on the five Hearts, flushing of the zygomatic region in the afternoon, tidal fever, dizziness, insomnia, yellow and scanty urination, and constipation. Especially tidal fever, insomnia, and constipation showed statistically significant difference. The total of ten items consisting of Yin-deficiency-related symptoms showed statistically significant high score in night-shift workers than the daytime workers. 'Factors for deficiency-type Heat' consisting of irritable fever on the five Hearts, flushing of the zygomatic region in the afternoon, tidal fever, and dried mouth and throat showed statistically significant high score in night-shift workers than the daytime workers. 'Accompanying factors' consisting of night sweats, emaciation, dizziness, insomnia, yellowish and scanty urination, and constipation also showed statistically and significantly high score in night-shift workers than the daytime workers. From the above results that night-shift workers show high degree of Yin-deficiency than daytime workers, and those overworking irregularly also show high degree of Yin-deficiency than those who work for adequate amount of time regularly implies that sitting up at night for work and sleeping at daytime, excessive work, and irregular life styles all function as high-risk factor for Yin-deficiency.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop a standard instrument of diagnosis and assessment for spleen qi deficiency pattern. Methods: Reports published in Korea and China related to spleen qi deficiency pattern were selected. Assessments of selected references were performed to select major symptoms of spleen qi deficiency pattern. Korean translation and review by a Korean linguist were performed to create a draft of [Standard instrument of diagnosis and assessment for spleen qi deficiency (for subject)]. The final [Standard instrument of diagnosis and assessment for spleen qi deficiency (for subject)] was completed after assessment on inclusion or exclusion, on importance of items and on validity of translation by an expert committee, consisting of professors from the National College of Korean Medicine. The present study was carried out to investigate the potential adverse effects of CKD-602 by a 5-day repeated intravenous dose in Sprague-Dawley rats. The test article, CKD-602, was administered intravenously to male and female rats at dose levels of 0.07, 0.22, 0.67, 2.0 and 6.0 mg/kg/day for 5 days consecutively. Mortalities, clinical findings, and body weight changes were monitored for the 14-day period after cessation of the administration. At the end of 14-day observation period, all animals were sacrificed and complete gross postmortem examinations were performed. There were 2 and 5 treatment related deaths in the 0.67 and 2.0 mg/kg/day dose groups of both genders, respectively. Treatment related clinical signs, including hair loss, skin paleness, decreased locomotor activity, emaciation, and changes in stool were observed in a dose-dependent manner from the third day after initiation of the injection. Decrease or suppression of body weight was also observed dose-dependently in males and females of the treated groups. Gross postmortem examinations revealed a dose-dependent increase in the incidence and severity of atrophy or hypertrophy and white membrane formation in the spleen, atrophy of the thymus, diffuse white spots and paleness of the liver, paleness of the lung, kidney and adrenal gland, and dark red discoloration and dark red contents in the alimentary tract. Based on these results, it was concluded that the 5-repeated intravenous injection of CKD-602 to male and female rats resulted in increased incidence of abnormal clinical signs and death, decreased or suppressed body weight, and increased incidence of abnormal gross findings. In the present experimental conditions, the $LD_{50}$ value was 2.07 (95% confidence limit not specified) mg/kg/day in both genders and the $LD_{10}$ value was 1.72 (95% confidence limit not specified) mg/kg/day in both genders.

The present study was carried out to investigate the potential acute toxicity of CKD-602 by a single intravenous dose in Sprague-Dawley rats. Ten males females were used in each test groups: a vehicle control, 34.7, 4l.7, 50.0, 60.0 and 72.0 mg/kg groups, and were given different single intravenous doses of CKD-602 to the test animals. Mortalities, clinical findings, and body weight changes were monitored for the 14-day period following the administration. At the end of l4-day observation period, all animals were sacrificed and complete gross postmortem examinations were performed. One, 1, 2, 8 and 9 cases of deaths occurred in the male dose groups of 34.7, 41.7, 50.0, 60.0 and 72.0 mg/kg, respectively, and 1, 5 and 9 cases in the female dose groups 50.0, 60.0 and 72.0 mg/kg, respectively. An increase in the incidence of clinical signs such as alopecia, skin pallor skin ulcerations, emaciation and change of fecal material was found in the both sexes of all treatment groups. A decrease or Suppression in the body weight was also observed in a dose-dependent manner. In autopsy, male and/or female rats of the treatment groups showed treatment-related gross findings such as splenomegaly, atrophy of the testis, epididymis, seminal vesicles, ovary, uterus and thymus which were dose-dependent in incidence and severity. Based on these results, it was concluded that a single intravenous injection of CKD-602 to rats caused significant toxicities in gastrointestinal, hematopoietic, and reproductive systems. The $LD_{50}$ value was 53.8 (95% confidence limit: 48.5~60.6) mg/kg for males and 60.l (95% confidence limit: 55.3~65.8) mg/kg for females. The $LD_{10}$ value was 39.9 (95% confidence limit: 3l.7~44.8) mg/kg for males and 50.3 (95% confidence limit: 40.6~54.8) mg/kg for females.
