Dynamics of Industry-wide versus Firm-specific Benefits when Firms Collaborate on Building an Industry Infrastructure

  • Firms often collaborate on building an infrastructure, which benefits all the firms in the industry, although in unequal magnitudes. Then a difficult and tricky issue is concerned with 'free riding.' Should there be only 'common, i.e., industry-wide' benefits in such collaboration, the literature indicated that the free rider problem is unavoidable, In this paper, however, we suggest that while collaborating, the firm also learns firm-specific knowledge, experience, and know-how, which can be directly utilized for its own internal improvement. That is, the collaboration between firms provides them with not only 'industry-wide,' but also 'firm-specific' benefits, Our analysis shows that if there indeed exist two types of benefits simultaneously, depending on the balance between the two, the free rider problem can be mitigated or even eliminated.

  • The nonlinear characteristics for the hinge of a deployable missile control fin are investigated experimentally. The nonlinearity is caused by a worn or loose hinge and manufacturing tolerance and cannot be eliminated completely. The structural nonlinearity has an effect on the static and dynamic characteristics of the control fin. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the accurate nonlinear model for the hinge of the control fin. In the present study the existence of nonlinearities in the hinge is confirmed from the frequency response experiments such as tip random excitation and base sine sweep. Using the system identification method, especially, “Force-State Mapping Technique”, the types of nonlinearities are identified and the nonlinear hinge model of the control fin is established.

  • Development trend and current status were surveyed for pre-heat-treated high strength cold heading quality (CHQ) wire and it's forming technology. Spheroidizing, quenching, and tempering heat treatments are eliminated by adapting the pre-treated wire, which could reduce energy consumption rate and green house gas emission rate during produce parts requiring high strength. There are some challenging problems to expand application area such as enhancing forming tool life, and preventing delayed failure. Domestic research movement concerning the development and application of the new high strength wire was introduced.

  • In electropolishing, the ion from the surface of the metal is eliminated by means of an electrical potential and current. Electropolishing is being generally known as a replacement for mechanical finishing. In addition to making a surface smoother, it is a more visible means of brightening, deburring, cleaning, stress-relieving and improving the physical characteristics of most metals and alloys. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to investigate the characteristic of electropolishing STS304 and A12024 in terms of current density, polishing time and electrode gap, etc.

A Study on the Risk Assessment and Improvement of Musculoskeletal Burden Works in the Semiconductor Manufacturer (반도체 제조회사의 근골격계부담작업 유해요인조사 실태와 개선방안)

  • In Korea, companies which have work-related musculoskeletal burden works should have conducted legal risk assessments every three years from 2004 onwards. However, due to problems with the legal definition of work-related musculoskeletal burden works, some companies may have been exempted from the risk assessment even though their workers still experience work-related musculoskeletal pain. For example, the manufacturing process used by a particular semiconductor manufacturing company involved a great deal of legal musculoskeletal bueden works. However, this company eliminated the musculoskeletal burden works by continuously introducing automated processes, and finally, in 2016, all work which was legally defined as musculoskeletal burden work were removed from the company's manufacturing process. Nevertheless, in a 2016 survey, 9.6% of the company's workers still complained of musculoskeletal pain, and in a 2019 survey this proportion actually increased to 15.7%. This incident demonstrates the limitations and problems of the current legal risk assessment of work-related musculoskeletal burden work. Therefore, this study proposes two improvements to solve these problems. Firstly, it is necessary to broaden the current legal definition of work-related musculoskeletal burden works. For example, vibration risk factors and push/pull tasks that are currently missing from the definition should be included. Secondly, it is proposed that a survey on musculoskeletal pain should be conducted for all workers, regardless of whether they are engaged in musculoskeletal burden works. The results of this study could be used to improve the legal risk assessment of work-related musculoskeletal burden works.

Process Characteristics of Atmospheric Pressure Plasma for Package Substrate Desmear Process (패키지 기판 디스미어 공정의 대기압 플라즈마 처리 특성)

  • When the drill hole diameter for the package substrate is under $100{\mu}m$, the smear in the drill hole cannot be eliminated by wet desmear process only. We intended to change the substrate's hydrophobic characteristics to hydrophilic characteristics by adapting the atmospheric pressure plasma prior to the wet desmear process. Atmospheric pressure plasma process was made as the inline type equipment which is adequate for the package substrate's manufacturing process and remote DBD type electrodes were used for the equipment. As the result of atmospheric pressure plasma processing, the contact angle of the substrate was enhanced from 71 degree to 30 degree. Dielectric film thickness, drill hole diameter and surface roughness were measured to evaluated the characteristics of the wet desmear process in case of plasma processing and in case of none. By the measurement, it was analyzed that the process uniformity within the whole panel was largely enhanced. Also, it was verified that the smear in the drill hole was eliminated efficiently which was analyzed by the SEM image of the drill hole.

Effect of Ozone and Gamma Irradiation for Eliminating the Contaminated Microorganisms in Food Materials for Kimchi Manufacturing (김치 원부재료의 오염 미생물 제거를 위한 오존 및 감마선 조사의 영향)

  • Food materials for kimchi manufacturing were treated by ozone or gamma irradiation to reduce the number of contaminated microorganisms before the manufacturing of kimchi. Counts of total aerobic bacteria, yeast and mold were $10^6{\sim}10^7 and 10^3{\sim}10^4\;CFU/g$ in the food materials, respectively. After treatment with ozone $(3{\sim}6\;ppm), the total aerobic bacteria were reduced to 1 log cycle or more, in a dose-dependent manner. In comparison, gamma irradiation was superior to ozone treatment. Especially, irradiation of 5 kGy fully eliminated the yeast and mold attached in the food materials for kimchi manufacturing. The contents of ascorbic acid and total and reducing sugar were not affected by ozone or gamma irradiation. Taken together, it is suggested that microorganisms contaminated on materials for kimchi manufacturing could be substantially reduced by ozone (up to 6 ppm) and gamma irradiation (up to 5 kGy), without effect on the nutritional contents.

An Experimental Study on Sink Mark Formation in Compression Molded SMC Parts with Rib (리브를 가진 일체형 SMC 압축성형재의 Sink Mark 형성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Compression molding of SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) in a thin plaque with substructures like a rib is involved with the formation of surface defect along the centerline over the rib area called by sink mark depending on process parameters. The surface quality of the external panels in automotive manufacturing is so critical that this kind of defect should be eliminated during manufacturing stages. The effect of process parameters on sink mark formation and the distribution of chopped fiberglasses in the compression molded thin plaque with a rib was experimentally investigated in the present study. In order to estimate the effect of the molding parameters such as molding temperature, mold closing speed, depth of the rib, corner radius of the rib, and final molded part thickness of flat portion on the depth of sink mark and the distribution of fiberglasses in the molded SMC part with the rib under the present experimental conditions, the molding parameters used in experiments were non-dimensionalized equation for predicting the depth of sink mark was determined through dimensional analysis based on the experimental data. The orientation and distribution of fiberglasses and fillers which directly affect the formation and depth of sink mark were investigated by taking the photographs of the cross-sectional area of the molded specimen using scanning electron microscope. The experimental results proposed from this investigation are useful in understanding the formation of sink mark and predicting the depth of sink mark in compression molding of SMC with substructures.

Determination of Lock-in Frequency in Accordance with Material of Target for Defect Measuring by Lock-in Mid-IR Thermography (위상잠금 중파장 적외선 열화상 기법에 의한 결함 계측에서 측정 대상체의 재질에 따른 위상잠금 주파수 연구)

  • Three types of samples with defects were measured by lock-in med-IR (infrared) thermography with various lock-in frequencies for different materials. The lock-in method can be used to detect defects when an external energy source is applied to the object, the non-uniformity of the incident thermal energy distribution is eliminated, and the camera's measurement cycle is synchronized with the load cycle of the incident energy source. For inspecting samples with defects, results of thermal images are analyzed when three types of materials, i.e., SM45C, STS316L, and AL6061 are tested and three lock-in frequencies, i.e., 0.08, 0.1, and 0.12 Hz are applied. In this study, the optimal lock-in frequencies were determined by comparing the results of each material and lock-in frequency measured using the mid-IR camera.

Development of Strain-gauge-type Rotational Tool Dynamometer and Verification of 3-axis Static Load (스트레인게이지 타입 회전형 공구동력계 개발과 3축 정적 하중 검증)

  • In this task, the tool dynamometer design and manufacture, and the Ansys S/W structural analysis program for tool attachment that satisfies the cutting force measurement requirements of the tool dynamometer system are used to determine the cutting force generated by metal cutting using 3-axis static structural analysis and the LabVIEW system. The cutting power in a cutting process using a milling tool for processing metals provides useful information for understanding the processing, optimization, tool status monitoring, and tool design. Thus, various methods of measuring cutting power have been proposed. The device consists of a strain-gauge-based sensor fitted to a new design force sensing element, which is then placed in a force reduction. The force-sensing element is designed as a symmetrical cross beam with four arms of a rectangular parallel line. Furthermore, data duplication is eliminated by the appropriate setting the strain gauge attachment position and the construction of a suitable Wheatstone full-bridge circuit. This device is intended for use with rotating spindles such as milling tools. Verification and machining tests were performed to determine the static and dynamic characteristics of the tool dynamometer. The verification tests were performed by analyzing the difference between strain data measured by weight and that derived by theoretical calculations. Processing test was performed by attaching a tool dynamometer to the MCT to analyze data generated by the measuring equipment during machining. To maintain high productivity and precision, the system monitors and suppresses process disturbances such as chatter vibration, imbalances, overload, collision, forced vibration due to tool failure, and excessive tool wear; additionally, a tool dynamometer with a high signal-to-noise ratio is provided.
