  • The problem of odor and environmental pollution caused by livestock manure is spreading greatly as a social issue. To reduce the odor of livestock raised in livestock farms and improve the farm environment, raw materials of Abelmoschus manihot Jinhuakui were put into feed additives to measure the state of odor. It is characterized by being non-toxic and sweet, and Abelmoschus manihot Jinhuakui, which contains abundant nutrients that are beneficial to health in all parts such as roots, stems, and flowers, is a medicinal plant that cannot be discarded. In particular, it has the effect of helping bowel movements because it stimulates bowel movements. Ammonia levels were investigated through the KS X 3279 national standard-applied smart livestock IoT hub sensor pack installed at Flower Garden and Ugil Farm. The purpose of this paper is to reduce the odor that is the most problematic on farms and improve the environment, and it is planned to expand research into deodorants after feed additives. It is hoped that the research results will solve the livestock problem and help livestock farmers.

  • With the commercialization and full-timeization of the livestock industry, civil complaints continue to increase, and the livestock industry is facing a crisis due to social problems such as odor caused by livestock manure, soil pollution, water pollution, and environmental pollution. In order to increase productivity in livestock farms, the amount of livestock manure generated is increasing due to excessive use of protein feed and high-density breeding environment, and complaints such as odor and water pollution due to management problems are increasing rapidly. Livestock odor has emerged as a serious social problem, and due to growing complaints, conflicts between the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Environment are even causing the livestock industry to lower its status. There is an urgent need for solutions to identify problems in the livestock industry and improve policies. This study aims to develop a " Abelmoschus Manihot Jinhuakui " brand that can improve the intestinal environment of livestock, reduce odors caused by livestock excrement, and improve the productivity of livestock farms in order to improve the increasingly serious odor problem in livestock sites. For Jeju livestock farms, which place more importance on the environment by securing tourists, eco-friendly feed additives were applied to the experiment, the results were derived, and the focus was on solving fundamental problems of odor generation through the development and packaging of feed additive brands. We aim to fundamentally solve the odor problem of domestic livestock farms, secure eco-friendly livestock farms, and contribute to reducing livestock odors and increasing productivity through research results that reduce ammonia levels in each livestock farm.

  • Livestock odor is comprised of mixed type of odorous compounds. Among these, ammonia ($NH_3$) and hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) are the two known major odor causing substances. Because high odor concentration reduces productivity of livestock and causes damage to the surrounding communities, quantitative analysis is needed to manage the odor inside and outside the livestock facilities. It is also necessary to evaluate odor dispersion according to the distance between the receptors taking into account the influence of odor source and weather condition. Therefore, in this study, we tried to evaluate the internal environment and odor dispersion from experimental pig house considering weather conditions. An experimental farm was specifically selected to eliminate the interference of odors generated by adjacent farms. $NH_3$ and complex odor were quantitatively analyzed using a gas detector and air dilution sensory method. The concentration of $NH_3$ and complex odor in pig house showed a distinct concentration difference according to the cleaning and ventilation conditions. $NH_3$ concentration and complex odor was lower than emission standard in the pig house and at the site boundary. The average $NH_3$ concentration (P1~P3) and the $NH_3$ concentration at the site boundary (S1) were strongly correlated with R=0.77. While the correlation for complex odor inside and at the site boundary had R=0.52. The correlation coefficient between $NH_3$ and the complex odor was 0.80.

  • Urban sanitary sewer systems can aid in preventing inundation, and can improve civil health by effectively disposing stormwater and wastewater. However, since sewage odor can cause adverse effects, numerous technical and administrative studies have been conducted for reducing such odor. European countries and the United States of America (USA) built modern sewer systems in the late 19th century, and have since been endeavoring to eliminate sewage odors. Several cities of the USA, such as Los Angeles (LA) that has a separate sewer system and San Francisco (SF) that has a combined sewer system, have produced and distributed odor control master plan manuals. Features common in the odor reduction plans of both these cities are that the odor reduction programs are operated in all the respective local regions and are supported by administrative systems. The primary aspectual difference between the two said programs is that the city of LA employs a sewage air purification system, whereas the city of SF controls the emission of major odor causing compounds. Compared to the existing sewer odor reduction systems of these two cities, South Korea is still in the initial phase of development. Through technical studies and policy implementations for sewer odor reduction, a foundation can be laid for improving the civil health quality.

  • These experiments were made to investigate the characteristics of cocoon pupas. The proximate composition and fatty acids were analyzed. In order to eliminate the unfavorable odor of cocoon pupas, alkaline treatment and extraction of fat were conducted. The results were as follows. 1) The unfavorable odor can be eliminated through the extraction of fat. Boiling with n-hexane for 1 hour was the best. 2) The cocoon pupas were contaminated with $10^8$ bacterial counts/g at the first eating state. When they were stored at room temperature for 6 days, bacterial counts did not increase inure than $10^8$, but they were putrefacted with bad odor. 3) The powder of defatted cocoon pupas prepared for food material contained around 1.3% moisture, 76.0% protein, 0.8% crude fat, and 4.8% ash. 4) It was not efficient to eliminate unfavorable odor by alkaline treatment. 5) The fatty acids of cocoon pupas are composed of 0.35% myristic acid, 20.90% palmitic acid, 0.5% palmitoleic acid, 7.11% stearic acid, 32.20% oleic acid, 5.48% linoleic acid and 30.31% linolenic acid.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the applicability of a manhole-filter odor eliminator that is installed on a manhole to remove hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) contained in the sewage of urban streets; $H_2S$ is the very cause of offensive odor from such sewage. An analysis of the capability of impregnated activated carbon, which is contained in the manhole filter, to adsorb hydrogen sulfide shows that some 99.8% of hydrogen sulfide can be removed. A performance evaluation of the manhole-filter odor eliminator, which was made on Manhole Section 4 known as the representative malodorous manhole section of Seoul, Korea, indicates that more than 97% of hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), one of typical malodor-generating substances, can be eliminated. The results and findings of the study as described above suggest that the applicability of the manhole-filter odor eliminator to eliminate offensive odor generated from sewer manholes is satisfactory.

  • Because sensing odor varies depending on each person, even if the odor is released in line with the legal emission permission concentration levels, it can still become a social issue if a civil complaint is made. The purpose of this research is to study the possibility of putting Mn-Cu metallic oxide catalysts into practical use to economically eliminate acetaldehyde which produces a odor in the industrial process. An optimal operating parameter to eliminate acetaldehyde was deduced through a performance evaluation in the research laboratory and the performance was verified by applying the parameter into an actual facility as an on-the-site experiment through a Scale-up of pilot size. The operating temperature of the metallic oxide catalysts researched so far was at the minimum close to $220^{\circ}C$, and the $220^{\circ}C$ elimination efficiency was 50% or below. However, having experimented by using a Mn-Cu metallic oxide catalyst in this research, optimum elimination efficiency showed when space velocity (GHSV) was equal to or below 6,000 $hr^{-1}$. The average elimination efficiency was 61.2% when the catalyst controlling temperature was $120^{\circ}C$, 93.3% when the catalyst controlling temperature was $160^{\circ}C$, and 94.9% when catalyst controlling temperature was $180^{\circ}C$, thereby reflecting high elimination efficiency. The specific surface area of the catalyst was $200m^2/g$ before use, however, was reduced to $47.162m^2/g$ after 24 months and therefore showed that despite the decrease in specific surface area as time passed, there was no significant influence on the performance. Having operated Mn-Cu metallic oxide catalyst systems for at least two years on a site where there was no inflow of toxins like sulfur compounds and acidic gases, we were able to confirm that elimination efficiency of at least 90% was maintained.

  • In this paper, we propose method of correlation coefficients between sensors by statistical analysis that selects optimal sensors in odor recognition system of selective multi-sensors. The proposed sensor decision method obtains odor data from Metal Oxide Semiconductor(MOS) sensor array and then, we decide optimal sensors based on correlation of obtained odors. First of all, we select total number of 16 sensors eliminated sensor of low response and low reaction rate response among similar sensors. We make up DB using 16 sensors from input odor and we select sensor of low correlation after calculated correlation coefficient of each sensor. Selected sensors eliminate similar sensors' response therefore proposed method are able to decide optimal sensors. We applied to floral scent recognition for performance evaluation of proposed sensors decision method. As a result, application of proposed method with floral scent recognition using correlation coefficient obtained recognition rate of 95.67% case of using 16 sensors while applied floral scent recognition system of proposed sensor decision method confirmed recognition rate of 94.67% using six sensors and 96% using only 8 sensors.

  • In this paper, in order to eliminate Limnoperna fortunei inhabiting the water conduction pipeline, prechlorination at the intake station was employed to improve the degradation of water quality due to the high pH of raw water taken at the downstream of Paldang Dam, algal growth, etc.. With the prechlorination concentration of 1.0mg/L at the intake station, the pH in the water well at the treatment plant decreased by 0.4, and with 1.5mg/L, by 0.6. Also, it eliminated Chlorophyll-a by about 95%, and the population of algae by about 49%. Such disinfection by-products (DBPs) as Trihalomathanes (THMs), Haloacetic Acids (HAAs), and Chloral Hydrate (CH) were under the quality standard for potable water, showing no change by the prechlorination, while raising the prechlorination rate from 1.0 up to 1.5mg/L, the DBPs in the water well increased by 1.5 to 3.1 times. As a consequence of testing Kyungan Stream, a branch stream flowing into Lake Paldang, the prechlorination (0.57mg/L, 1.14mg/L, 1.71mg/L) had no effect of eliminating the taste and odor compounds and total organic carbon (TOC) which is the DBPs precursor. As for the efficiency of Geosmin elimination by the rates of prechlorination and powder activated carbonation (PAC), it was found that the higher the concentration of PAC was (30ppm>20ppm>10ppm), the higher the efficiency was; the higher the rate of prechlorination was, the lower the efficiency by PAC was. Therefore, when taste and odor occur from raw water, suspending prechlorination at the intake or lowering the rate was proved to be more effective in eliminating the taste and odor compounds by PAC.

  • In the course of anaerobic storage of excess sludge, odors due to chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide are produced. These odors cause many problems. Many methods have been developed to eliminate odors, but all current methods are not only costly, but also largely ineffective. In this paper, we investigate the process of transformation of sludge microorganism cultures through intense aeration under nutrient-poor conditions, in terms of the selective adjustment and control of microorganism culture. The aerated sludge is subsequently returned to the adjusting pool, where the microorganisms inhibit odors, thus the excess sludge itself will act as an odor inhibitor. The process can be verified in terms of viability, in that the degradation capacity of the sludge was maintained after the intensely-aerated sludge was returned to the treatment system.
