  • The purpose of this study is to investigate activities of sharing learning objectives in mathematics lesson and by doing that, to draw some conclusions on sharing learning objectives in elementary school mathematics lessons. To gather data, 82 pre-service teachers who participated in 4-week teaching practicum were asked to record their mathematics lesson and to transcribe their teaching activities. Specifically by analyzing the data, suggestions on how to share the learning objectives in elementary school mathematics were drawn.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the contents on statistics in elementary mathematics textbook according to 2009 school curriculum. And we analyzed the elementary mathematics textbook in the light of data collection, graph understanding level suggested by Cursio. Specially, we analyzed the contents within the framework of evaluation norm suggested in 2015 school curriculum. We expect that this study will be a fundamental reference for the development of textbook according to 2015 school curriculum.

  • The University of Education trains the teachers who are experts in the education and expects them to achieve the purpose of the education in the field. The goal of this study is to apprehend the characteristics of the belief and the faith of the elementary teacher and of the university student who are preliminary elementary teachers, about the mathematics and the mathematical teaching and learning and also to figure out what differences those belief and faith shows as the year goes by. In order to find the characteristics of the belief and faith, we have set up three research-problems and have found the answers of that by analyzing the replies of several multiple choice questions and essay questions we have invested for. We also have collected several information through the interviews and inspection. As a result, we have analyzed and charted the outcome of the statistical analysis of the answers about each questions and have discussed the remarkable features of those results which showed significant changes in the belief of elementary teachers about the mathematics and mathematical teaching & learning after taking the courses of "Life & Mathematics".

  • Although student-centered teaching practices have been advocated in mathematics education reform, implementing them at the classroom level remains challenging. This exploratory case study examined two unevenly successful student-centered approaches to see how teachers understand and characterize reform, and to articulate issues in implementing reform ideas. The comparison and contrast between the classrooms showed similar classroom social norms but dramatically different mathematical practices. This affords the possibility of exploring the challenges of reform for teachers and other personnel who are attempting to move teaching practices towards the student-centered ideals.

  • Mathematics and science are very closely related. Among the science areas, physic is strongly linked with mathematics. As the related mathematics skills were alloted later than the science contents in the national curriculum, students often suffer from science classes. Accordingly, an opinion have been claimed to teach the related mathematics skills prior to the science classes. However, it would be hard to arrange all science and mathematics contents in order. Instead of that, in this research, we taught students mathematics contents that are crucial for learning speed through science classes. We called that teaching strategy an integrated science and mathematics class. Then, we examined students' achievement in science as well as skills of mathematics to know the effectiveness of the strategy. We found that the average mathematics score of the whole class went up meaningfully. We also found that their science achievement was above than basic level. Moreover, the homeroom teacher of the students observed 3 aspects which showed the students were better than previous students. Finally, we divided the students into 4 groups by their science and mathematics achievement score and interviewed each group. As a result, we knew that interesting and confidence in science and mathematics quite exerted influence on their achievement.

  • The aim of the study presented in this paper was to explore South Korean elementary teachers' knowledge regarding educational theory in mathematics. An independent t-test and ANOVA are applied to examine elementary teachers' knowledge regarding educational theory in mathematics. Findings of this study suggest that there is a negative correlation between the teachers' knowledge regarding educational theory in mathematics and their teaching experiences as well as the teacher certification level. However, there is a little affect of the teachers' gender and educational backgrounds on the teachers' knowledge regarding educational theory in mathematics. The results of this quantitative study may broaden our understanding of the South Korean elementary teachers' knowledge for teaching mathematics, which have a deep impact on their teaching practice.

  • This study focused on the classification of triangles by angles in elementary school mathematics. We examined Korean national mathematics curriculum from the past to the present. We also examined foreign textbooks and the Euclid's . As a result, it showed that the classification is not indispensable from the mathematical and the perceptual viewpoint. It is rather useful for students to know the names of triangles when studying upper level mathematics in middle and high schools. This study also suggested that the classification be introduced in elementary school mathematics in the context of reasoning and inquiring as shown foreign textbooks, and example topics for the reasoning and inquiring.

  • Long division was one of the major issues in math war II started from 1990's in US. In this paper, we investigated this concretely and examined present teaching condition of long division in Korea. Firstly, Long division is not only a mechanical way to get the answer but also a realization of core conception in elementary mathematics. Futhermore it is a connecting link between elementary and middle mathematics education. Secondly, it is needed to use the term 'long division' to provide the concrete teaching guidelines. Thirdly, a minor algorithm, like an 'partial quotient method', is necessary to introduce in order to help understanding long division.
