The purpose of the present study is to develop several types of English teaching/learning models in view of cross-curricular approach in Korean elementary school. Brewster(1992)' model is suitable for younger children as well as the 1st or 2nd graders. For 3rd or 4th graders, Halliwel1(1997)' model seems more proper type in Korean EFL situation. There has been studying for cross-curricular approach in elementary English education. Many studies has recently focused the characteristics of elementary students by cognitive and psychological perspectives. Among them, Park(1996)'s research talks about the elementary school students. Han(1996)'s research based on the notion of applied to other subjects. Kim(1999)'s also emphasized the importance of linking other subjects. Kim(2003) argued the need of integrating English with other subjects. The elementary education as the National Common Basic Curriculum(NCBC) has the essence of cross-curricular approach, so the English education will be linked with other subject matters more and more, not just as for Communicative function based English education but as both content and function based subject matter.

This paper aims to find out the current state of early English education in the world(including Korea) and to suggest its more desirable direction, with special reference to TEFL in elementary schools of Korea. In fact English teaching in elementary schools of Korea has been put into practice as an extracurricular activity since 1982. But in 1995 the Ministry of Education proclaimed a policy to establish a TEFL program as the regular course in elementary schools of Korea since 1997. In this connection, the writer surveyed several kinds of theories about early English education to verify the necessity and validity of Korea's elementary school English education. The logical result from these theories is that younger children are better equipped to learn foreign languages with efficiency than older children or adults. However, as most studies are based on logical inferences rather than on direct observation or experimental evidence, we are not sure that those theories are right. In this view, the writer put stress on the preparation of educational environments to establish a more desirable direction of early English education in Korea, since Korea's elementary school English education will be practiced under EFL environment, not ESL environment. The writer also pointed out some problems of educational finances, the curriculum development process and its content, teaching materials(textbooks and tapes), English teachers, teaching methods, evaluation, educational facilities. This paper concludes that we have to try to solve these problems to succeed in a TEFL program in elementary schools of Korea and suggests several things for a more desirable direction of Korea's elementary school English education.

English has been taught as a compulsory subject at elementary schools since 1997 starting with third graders, to sixth graders. We have seen active research on teaching methods for elementary English, but little has been done from the learners' perspective. It is very proper time for English educators to review what the elementary students think about their English classes. The purpose of the present study is as following. First, we tried to find out how the students' attitude toward and interest in English have changed over the four-year English education. Second we attempted to suggest the ways to promote the students' interests, and to increase understanding and participation in English classes. We also suggest that curriculum developers need to consider the students' lower interests and understanding in English classes as they move to higher grades, and that classroom teachers need to have a better understanding of what their students do and feel in the English classes.

English teaching in the elementary school of Korea had been put into practice as an extracurricular activity from 1982 till 1996. But a TEFL program as a regular course in the elementary school of Korea has been practiced since 1997, according to the language policy to establish early English education in all the elementary schools of Korea. The purpose of this study is to identify the current state of English teaching in the elementary school of Korea, to investigate its problems and to suggest some remedies for its improvement. For this purpose this study includes the analysis and result of the survey. The survey result points out that English teaching in the elementary school of Korea is not satisfactory and has some problems in many fields. In this connection the present study suggests some remedies for the improvement of English teaching in the elementary school of Korea.

본 연구는 초등 자녀를 둔 학부모들의 SW교육에 대한 인식·수요 조사를 기반으로 초등학생 대상 SW-영어 융합교육 프로그램을 개발하고 설계하기 위한 사전 연구이다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 초등학생을 자녀로 둔 학부모 120명을 대상으로 설문을 하였다. 연구 결과, 대부분의 학부모는 SW교육의 중요성 및 초등 5·6학년 대상 SW 의무교육 지정에 대해서 높은 인식을 가지고 있었다. 하지만, 현행의 17시간의 의무교육 시수가 부족하다고 인식하였으며, 동시에 저학년부터 SW교육이 시작되길 희망하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, SW-영어 융합교육의 필요성을 인식하고 SW교육과 영어교육을 동시에 배우는 SW-영어 융합캠프에 대한 참여관심도가 높았다. 특히, 참여시 2주간의 교육 기간 선호와 SW교육과 영어교육 비율은 6(SW):4(영어)를 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 지역별 분류에서도 저학년부터 SW교육 도입의 의견과 SW-영어 융합캠프 참여시 2주간의 교육 기간을 선호와 일일 2시간 교육이 적당하다고 하였다. 한편, 지역별 SW교육 기관의 선호 측면에서는 다른 양상을 보였다. 서울·경기지역은 초등학교 방과 후 수업을 가장 많이 선호하였으며, 충청지방은 인근 대학 연계 SW교육을 가장 많이 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 각 교육기관 및 교육자들은 SW-영어 융합교육에 대한 프로그램 설계 및 지역별 요구에 알맞은 다양한 프로그램 개발을 모색해야 할 것이다.

그동안의 소프트웨어교육과 타 교과의 연계 융합에 대한 연구는 주로 수학과 과학교과에 편중되어왔다. 이는 학생의 교과에 대한 다양한 선호와 학습 성격 유형 등을 만족시키지 못하여 학습 격차를 유발할 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 컴퓨팅 사고를 적용할 수 있는 다양한 융 복합적 문제의 해결과정을 다루어야 함을 감안할 때 바람직하지 않다. 그리하여 기존의 수학과학적 접근에서 벗어난 언어적인 접근인 영어교과와의 연계를 통해 학생들의 다양한 성향과 선호를 포용하고, 영어교과와 소프트웨어교육의 새로운 언어를 배우는 과정과 방법상의 유사점을 접목시켜 교육 효과의 향상을 도모하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 초등 영어교과와 소프트웨어교육의 교수학습모델 분석을 토대로 연계에 적합하도록 기존의 영어교과와 소프트웨어 교수학습모델을 변형하여 수업모형을 개발하였다. 이후 초등학교 영어교과내용 중 소프트웨어교육에 적용 가능한 학습 요소를 추출하여 개발된 수업모형에 적용한 프로그램을 설계하여 실제적인 학습 활용 방안을 모색하였다.

초등영어교육이 듣기, 말하기 위주의 음성언어 중심 교육 원칙을 중요시하고 있으나 현재의 학습환경에서는 비디오나 오디오를 따라하는 수준에서 지도되고 있다. 음성언어 중심 영어학습은 ESL환경에서 배우는 것이 가장 효과적이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 학교교육에서 배운 영어를 웹에서 학습할 수 있는 기회를 갖도록 멀티미디어 컨텐츠를 제작하여 제공하도록 하고 있다. 또한 화상회의 시스템이나 전자우편을 통하여 언제든지 다시 사용해 볼 기회를 갖게 함으로써 영어학습에 대한 강화가 실생활에서 일어날 수 있도록 하는 방안에 대해 연구하였다.

2015 개정 교육과정의 궁극적인 목표는 창의융합형 인재육성이다. 본 연구에서는 과학 애니메이션을 활용한 영어 융합 수업을 통해 초등학교 6학년 학생들의 영어 듣기와 읽기 능력(이하 영어 능력)이 얼마나 향상되었는지를 검증하고자 하였다. 실험반(27명) 학생들은 영어수업 시작 전 융합수업을 받은 반면 통제반(28명) 학생들은 그 시간에 전 시간에 배운 수업을 복습하였다. 실험 시작 전, 2018년 3월에 C 교육청에서 실시한 초등학교 6학년 진단평가를 통해 동질집단인 것을 확인하였고 10개월의 실험기간 종료 후 2017년 3월 C 교육청에서 실시한 중학교 1학년용 진단평가를 통해 학생들의 영어능력 향상 여부를 알아보았다. 실험 결과, 융합수업을 받은 학생들의 영어 능력이 향상된 것으로 나타났다. 뿐만 아니라 실험 전 후 영어학습에 대한 정의적 태도에 관한 설문조사 결과, 흥미도와 자신감 측면에서 향상이 있었음도 확인할 수 있었다.

본 논문의 목적은 한국 초등학교 영어 교육에서 문화 요소의 효율적 지도방법을 안내하고자 한다. 논문의 목적을 위해서 초등영어 문화교육에 관한 많은 연구들을 분석하였다. 국제화 시대에 의사소통을 위한 영어교육은 다양한 타 문화에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 이루어져야 한다. 그러나 한국 초등학교 학생들은 영어권 나라의 문화에 노출되거나 접근하는데 어려움이 있다. 초등영어 문화교육이 잘 이루어지지 못하는 데는 다음과 같은 이유가 있다. 첫째, 영어교사들이 목표 문화에 대한 자신감이 없고 자신들 스스로 문화교육을 위한 충분한 경험과 지식이 없다고 간주한다. 영어교사들 역시 문화요소에 대해 배우지 못했고 문화요소가 강조되지 않았었다. 둘째, 교과서와 교사용 지도서에 문화 관련된 적절한 교수내용이 없다. 그러므로 필수적인 문화 요소는 영어교육 전문가들에 의해서 채택되고 교과서와 교사용 지도서에 수록되어야 한다. 교과서와 교사용 지도서는 체계적으로 연관성을 가져야 한다. 초등 영어 교사들은 다양한 문화를 경험하고 이해할 수 있는 기회를 늘려야 할 것으로 본다. 언어는 문화의 일부이고 문화는 언어의 일부이다. 제 2언어 습득은 제 2문화 습득이기도 하다. 초등 영어 교과서에서 문화요소를 심도 있게 다루고 문화에 대한 이해와 경험을 갖춘 교사가 양성 되었을 때 진정한 의사소통을 위한 영어교육이 이루어 질 수 있다.

The Purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the Smart reading program, Smartree, in an elementary English class. Recently in Korea, the use of smart technologies in education has become an issue with the introduction of a new educational platform and increased social interaction between teachers and students. The Smart learning paradigm is converging with technology and social learning. This study examines an English reading method using smart technology and how it affects the improvement of elementary students' reading ability, we also suggest effective reading methods related to Smart learning suitable for this new educational trend. The results showed that the use of a tablet PC based Smartree reading program had meaningful effects on both improvements of cognitive reading ability and changes in affective attitude.
