  • The purpose of this study was to investigate and analysis the elementary teachers' and students' views about the difficulties in teaching and learning in geology units of elementary school science. For the purpose of this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted individually with seventeen elementary teachers who have serviced more than three years, and with sixteen elementary students located in Cheongju City. The interview questions were developed through Seidman's step to acquire a reliability in the interview data with triangulation, then in-depth interview questions were modified and completed through pre-interview after constructing the trustworthiness of interviewees. In-depth interviews were performed in applying the analytic induction method and the interviews were recorded. From the interviews, we found that elementary teachers' views about the difficulties in teaching geology units; teachers' inner difficulties, the difficulty of lab activities, the problems of rock samples, the problems of curriculum in geology units, the difficulty of the geological feature, the problems of the cramming education, the lack of the opportunity for the speciality, and so on. And the students have the views about the difficulties in learning geology units; the difficulty of the unit contents understanding, the problems of learning by heart, the lack of the interest, the lack of materials, the problems of rock samples, the difficulty of the field learning, and so on. Based on the results, the study suggested that an interesting lab activities should be included in the geology units and taught in the geological field trip to help elementary school students more fully comprehend contents of the geology units.

  • This study involved an investigation of prospective elementary teachers' preconceptions and experiences of diagrams and their ability to draw diagrams in solving math word problems. A questionnaire and two math word problems were administered to prospective elementary teachers who began to taking an introductory mathematics education course. The results from the analysis of their responses to the questionnaire items indicate that prospective elementary teachers appreciate the value of diagrams as tools for problem solving and communication. In addition, prospective elementary teachers have the will not only to teach their future students how to use diagrams but also to encourage them to draw diagrams in solving math word problems. However, the results also indicates that prospective elementary teachers neither use diagrams spontaneously in their math problem solving activities nor have confidence in drawing useful diagrams. Prospective elementary teachers also manifested low scores on the questionnaire items asking whether they were taught how to draw useful diagrams or encouraged by their teachers to use diagrams in their previous learning experiences. The results from the analysis of the diagrams that prospective elementary teachers drew in solving math word problems showed that most of them had difficulty drawing diagrams that represent their reasoning and solving process.

  • The purpose of this study is a review of previous studies and principles of eye-tracking techniques that are actively applied in recent elementary science education. Also it proposes to utilize the direction of eye tracking techniques in elementary science education research. Recent eye-tracking technology was developed, using the infrared pupil and the corneal reflection can be safely and accurately track the eye movements of the participants. Eye tracking has the advantage of higher temporal resolution, accessibility, convenience, objectivity, stability and safety. Analysis of the previous studies, there was a difference in the study design and analysis. The workshops and seminars are needed for accurate understanding of eye-tracking method in elementary science education research. In conclusion, the eye-tracking can be utilized such as effectiveness analysis of teaching materials and media, behaviors analysis of teachers and students in a real class, cognitive strategies and attention analysis of the student, discriminating tool of various education evaluation, etc.

  • In this study, the contents of elementary school science textbooks related to 'heat and temperature' are analyzed and alternative conceptions ofi"heat and temperature" among students enrolled in grades 4, 5 and 6 are investigated. 259 students were selected from a elementary school located in urban area. The relationships between students' alternative conceptions and the content of elementary science textbooks are also examined. Students' conceptions are analyzed from their answers to a paper-and-pencil test. The typical alternative conception of "heat and temperature" held by students was follows. They think that "heat" is a material and "temperature" is value of heat amount. They can't distinguish between "heat" and "temperature". Their explanation of "heat and temperature" is focused on hot or cool sensation and other observable characteristics of a material. A textbook analysis indicated that contents on "heat and temperature" were organized without the viewpoint of particle motion theory. This may be one of the causes of students' alternative conceptions.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service elementary teachers' attitudes towards science teaching using 'Dimensions of Attitude Toward the Teaching of Science (DAS)'. After confirming the factors and reliabilities of the translated questionnaire by pilot test (N=68), the survey was administered online at one national university of education in Korea (N=527). The pre-service teachers generally thought elementary science education is important and did not believe gender difference in students and in teachers. Science education majors than other majors, males than females, and those who completed high school science track than humanity track had more positive attitudes toward science teaching in elementary school. The extent of teacher education curriculum completion had a little effect on the pre-service teachers' attitudes toward science teaching. The implications for teacher education were discussed.

  • The focus of this study was to identify and describe environmental preconceptions held by pre-service elementary teachers about three issues : greenhouse effect, ozone layer depletion and acid rain. Two hundred and twenty nine pre-service elementary teachers participated in this study. A 36 question survey was created by one of the authors. The questions focused on the cause, effects, and interactions of three environmental issues greenhouse effect of one layer depletion and acid rain. Pre-service elementary teachers answered the questions on a Likert scale. An analysis of the survey data indicated that the majority of pre-service elementary teachers possess an array of incorrect conceptions about the causes and effects of the greenhouse effect ozone layer depletion, and acid rain. and also many pre-service elementary teachers thought that there were causal relationships among the increase in greenhouse effect, the destruction of ozone layer, and the increase of acid rain.

  • The Purpose of this study is to investigate and suggest a personality education approach for solving interpersonal problems of elementary school students that elementary school teachers are now confronted with. In this study, first of all, the actual conditions of interpersonal problems of elementary school students were examined focusing on interpersonal aggressions(violence and victim). The features and problems of existing approaches for solving interpersonal problems of elementary school students were indicated. Although existing approaches for solving interpersonal aggression problems took temporary and external changes, they failed to notice psychological hurts that victims and aggressive victims got. As a fundamental and systematic way for overcoming problems of existing approaches, forgiveness education based on empirical-scientific forgiveness researches was discussed. The Purpose of forgiveness education is to make victims(aggressive victims) overcome the negative responses derived from interpersonal conflict(hurts and victims) and to facilitate them to response positively through experiencing forgiveness psychological process. Lastly, necessary assignments and topics to use forgiveness education as an effective personality education approach were discussed.
