Preparation of C-plane oriented BaFe12O19 film by electrospray deposition of colloidal precursor particles (정전분무 장치를 이용한 C축 일방향 바륨페라이트(BaFe12O19) 박막형성)

  • New process consisting of electrospray and epitaxial crystal growth processes was applied to the preparation of c-plane oriented barium ferrite ($BaFe_{12}O_{19}$) thin film for high density magnetic recording media. Sodium citrate aided process was proper to preparation of amorphous $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ nanoparticles with geometric mean diameter of 3 nm and geometric standard deviation of 1.1. The electrospray was applicable to the prepare of amorphous $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ thin film on a substrate, and the film thickness could be controlled by adjusting the electrospray deposition time. The c-plane oriented $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ thin film was successfully prepared by 3 step annealing process of the $BaFe_{12}O_{19}$ amorphous film on a sapphire($Al_2O_3$) substrate; annealing at $350^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, annealing at $500^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, and annealing at $700^{\circ}C$ for 60 min.

  • Various solid structures were prepared by electrospray technique. In this process, liquid flows out from a capillary nozzle under a high electrical potential and is subjected to an electric field, which causes elongation of the meniscus to form a jet. In our study, by controlling the amount of polyvinyl pyrrolydone in precursor solution, the jet either disrupted into droplets for the formation of spherical particles or was stretched in the electric field for the formation of fibers. During the electrospray process, the ethanol solvent was evaporated and induced the solidification of precursors, forming solid particles. The evaporation of ethanol solvent also enhanced the mass transport of solutes from the inner core to the solid shell, which facilitated fabrication of porous and hollow structure. The network structures were also prepared by heating the collector.

  • Polymer solar cells are fabricated using electrospray (e-spray) deposition process. It shows comparable performance with reference devices, and has different characteristics according to the thickness of the active layer: In the case of the devices with higher fill factor, it shows relatively lower current density, and vice versa. These films are characterized by atomic force microscopy measurement. The results indicate that the comparable power conversion efficiency made by e-spray results from the 'solvent annealing effect' by process conditions and the different thin film property is caused by the degree of self-organization of the polymer.

  • Electrospray deposition (ESD) technique is fast finding its applicability in the field of thin film device manufacturing processes and the ease and cost efficiency attached to ESD process with possible integration with batch manufacturing technologies is the potential future of thin film device manufacturing. As the name suggests, the deposition phenomenon should solely be a spray achieved through electrostatic forces. In fact it is an imbalance between the surface forces arising because of the surface tension of the liquid to be sprayed and Maxwell stresses which are induced because of the electric field, that pull the liquid downwards from the capillary into a stable jet which further disintegrates into smaller droplets because of coulomb forces and hence a cloud of charged, mono-dispersed and extremely diminutive (sometimes up to femtolitres) droplets is achieved. The present talk is going to be exclusively about the electrospray process concepts, generation and possible applications.

Polymer Films with Electrospray Deposition, model and experiment

  • Electrospray deposited films of poly(vinylidene fluoride) were prepared with various conditions. A model has been developed, which provides the state of the electrosprayed droplet at impact. With a combination of the experimental films and the model calculations, it can be shown that growth rate, the increase of the sprayed solution on the substrate per second, defines the film morphology in electrospray deposition. Growth rate indicates which factors play the main role in the film formation process. The most important factors are liquid flow, surface tension and shear rate. The model can calculate the shear rate and it is shown that PVDF, and most likely polymers in general, has a large range of growth rates, where the morphology only depends on the shear rate of the depositing droplet. This method can also be used to describe electrospray deposition of other compounds.

  • Various structures of particles were prepared by electrospray technique. In this research, solid particles were formed by electrospraying a solution of ethanol containing polyvinyl and tetraethyl orthosilicate. During the electrospray process, the ethanol solvent was evaporated, resulting in the solidification of precursors, forming solid particles. Evaporation of ethanol solvent also enhanced the mass transport which facilitated the development of porous and hollow structures.

  • In this study, sheathless electrospray from PDMS/glass microchips with conducting metal emitter tip is described. A chip-based capillary electrophoresis/mass spectrometry (CE/MS) system has advantages of the CE separation and on-line electrospray detection of peptide solution. We have fabricated a new electrospray ionization(ESI) device composed of the metal emitter tip and CE separation channel monolithically in a glass microchip. The separation channel and metal emitter tip are fabricated using a glass wet etching and gold electro plating process, respectively. The fabricated micro electrospray chip was tested by spraying peptide sample for mass spectrometric analysis. Singlely-charged peak and doublely-charged peak of peptide were detected and further MS/MS fragmentation was performed in each peak. Direct comparisons with conventional glass or fused silica emitters showed very similar performance with respect to signal strength and stability.

Improvement of Spray Coating Uniformity using ESD Electrodes (ESD 전극을 이용한 분무코팅 균일도 개선에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, experiments are conducted to improve spray coating uniformity by using second and third electrodes based on the electrospray atomization mechanism. The uniformity of fabricated thin films can be improved by adjusting the design of the second electrode. The implementation of the second electrode with an elongated hole and a bending angle of $90^{\circ}$ results in highly uniform films. In addition, induced area to substrate is increased by lowering the applied voltage using the third electrode with a round rod shape. A linear correlation between applied voltage and induced area is confirmed. Thin film thickness and surface roughness are measured after the fabrication of thin films through the electrospray process. It is confirmed that a thin film is formed having an average thickness of 273.44 nm, a thickness uniformity of less than 10%, and a surface roughness of 3 nm.

Effect of Sintering Temperature on the High Temperature Oxidation of Fe-Cr-Al Powder Porous Metal Manufactured by Electrospray Process (정전 분무법을 이용하여 제조된 Fe-Cr-Al 분말 다공체 금속의 고온 산화에 미치는 소결 온도의 영향)

  • A new manufacturing process of Fe-Cr-Al powder porous metal was attempted. First, ultra-fine fecralloy powders were produced by using the submerged electric wire explosion process. Evenly distributed colloid (0.05~0.5% powders) was dispersed on PU (Polyurethane) foam through the electrospray process. And then degreasing and sintering processes were conduced. In order to examine the effect of sintering temperature in process, pre-samples were sintered for two hours at temperatures of $1350^{\circ}C$, $1400^{\circ}C$, $1450^{\circ}C$, and $1500^{\circ}C$, respectively, in $H_2$ atmospheres. A 24-hour TGA (thermo gravimetric analysis) test was conducted at $1000^{\circ}C$ in a 79% $N_2$+21% $O_2$ to investigate the high temperature oxidation behavior of powder porous metal. The results of the high temperature oxidation tests showed that oxidation resistance increased with increasing sintering temperature (2.57% oxidation weight gain at $1500^{\circ}C$ sintered specimen). The high temperature oxidation mechanism of newly manufactured Fe-Cr-Al powder porous metal was also discussed.
