A number of research groups worldwide are studying electronic implants that can be mounted on retinal optic nerve/visual cortex to restore vision of patients suffering from retinal degeneration. The implants consist of a neural interface made of biocompatible materials, one or more integrated circuits for stimuli generation, a camera, an image processor, and a telemetric channel. The realization of these classes of neural prosthetic devices is largely due to the explosive development of micro- and nano-electronics technologies in the late $20^{th}$ century and biotechnologies more recently. Animal experiments showed promise and some human experiments are in progress to indicate that recognition of images can be obtained and improved over time. We, at NBS-ERC of SNU, have started our own retinal implant project in 2000. We have selected polyimide as the biomaterial for an epi-retinal stimulator. In-vitro and in-vivo biocompatibility studies have been performed on the electrode arrays. We have obtained good affinity to retinal pigment epithelial cells and no harmful effect. The implant also showed very good stability and safety in rabbit eye for 12 weeks. We have also demonstrated that through proper stimulation of inner retina, meaning vision can be obtained.
A camera system for the satellite application performs the mission of observation by measuring radiated light energy from the target on the earth. As a development stage of the system, the signal level analysis by estimating the number of electron collected in a pixel of an applied CCD is a basic tool for the performance analysis like SNR as well as the data path design of focal plane electronic. In this paper, two methods are presented for the calculation of the number of electrons for signal level analysis. One method is a quantitative assessment based on the CCD characteristics and design parameters of optical module of the system itself in which optical module works for concentrating the light energy onto the focal plane where CCD is located to convert light energy into electrical signal. The other method compares the design\ parameters of the system such as quantum efficiency, focal length and the aperture size of the optics in comparison with existing camera system in orbit. By this way, relative count of electrons to the existing camera system is estimated. The number of electrons, as signal level of the camera system, calculated by described methods is used to design input circuits of AD converter for interfacing the image signal coming from the CCD module in the focal plane electronics. This number is also used for the analysis of the signal level of the CCD output which is critical parameter to design data path between CCD and A/D converter. The FPE(Focal Plane Electronics) designer should decide whether the dividing-circuit is necessary or not between them from the analysis. If it is necessary, the optimized dividing factor of the level should be implemented. This paper describes the analysis of the electron count of a camera system for a satellite application and then of the signal level for the interface design between CCD and A/D converter using two methods. One is a quantitative assessment based on the design parameters of the camera system, the other method compares the design parameters in comparison with those of the existing camera system in orbit for relative counting of the electrons and the signal level estimation. Chapter 2 describes the radiometry of the camera system of a satellite application to show equations for electron counting, Chapter 3 describes a camera system briefly to explain the data flow of imagery information from CCD and Chapter 4 explains the two methods for the analysis of the number of electrons and the signal level. Then conclusion is made in chapter 5.

Shielded metal arc welding machines with AC transformer have been widely used for thin-plate welding applications. Because of being bulky, heavy and of tap-changing property, so the SMAW's are changing to new power electronic circuits such as inverter circuit in order to reduce the system size and also to improve the welding performances at input output sides. The PWM inverter arc welding machine with diode rectifier has better output welding performances but it is has the plentiful harmonics and the lower input power factor. To solve these problems, input current-controlled scheme is considered for PWM inverter arc welding system, and then total input power factor is maintained to be more than 99%. Also a new combined control is proposed which can control both instantaeous welding output voltage and current under constant power condition, and as a result the variations of instantaneous current and voltage can be reduced to very narrow range in the V-I curve relationship, and hence the variance of welding current and voltage become so reduced. In addition the spatter generated during welding process is greatly reduced up to 70%. And the overall effiency can be improved up to 10%, which becomes higher when the load is lower.

In this paper, we designed and fabricated a 3-dB tandem coupler using air-bridge technology for millimeter-wane monolithic integrated circuits, operating at W-band($75{\sim}110\;GHz$) frequency. Tightly edge-coupled CPW line has low directivity due to different even-mode and odd-mode phase velocity. To overcome this disadvantage, a 3-dB tandem coupler which comprises the two-sectional weakly parallel-coupled lines with equal phase velocity was designed at W-band. The proposed coupler was fabricated using air-bridge technology to monolithically materialize the uniplanar coupler structure instead of conventional multilayer or wire bonded structure. From the measurements, the coupling coefficient of $2.9{\sim}3.6\;dB$ and the good phase difference of $91.2{\pm}2.9^{\circ}$ were obtained in broad frequency range of $75{\sim}100\;GHz$.

This paper describes fiber optic voltage sensor using EOM-BSO (Electro-Optic Modulator-Bismuth Silicon Oxcide). Transceiver has an electical/optical converter and an optical/electrical converter which consist of light emitting diode, PIN-PD, and electronic circuits. Multimode fiber cable of $100/140{\mu}m$ core/clad diameter is used for connecting the transceiver to fiber cable and fiber optic voltage sensor. Before our experiments, by applying the Maxwell equations and wave equations, We derive matrix equation on wave propagation in the BSO single crystal. And also we derive optimal equation on intensity modulation arising through an analyzer. According to experi-mental results, fiber optic voltage sensor has maximum $2.5{\%}$ error within the applied AC voltage of 800V. As the applied voltage increases, saturation values of voltage sensor also increase. This phenomenon is caused by optical rotatory power of BSO single crystal. And temperature dependence of sensitivity for fiber optical rotatory power of BSO single crystal. And temperature dependence of sensitivity for fiber optic voltage sensor in the temperature range from$-20^{\circ}C\to\60^{\circ}C$ are measured within ${\pm}0.6{\%}$. And frequency characteristics of the voltage sensor has good frequency characteristics from DC to 100kHz.

This paper presents a step-down DC-DC buck converter with a CCM/DCM dual-mode function for the internal power stage of portable electronic device. The proposed converter that is operated with a high frequency of 1 MHz consists of a power stage and a control block. The power stage has a power MOS transistor, inductor, capacitor, and feedback resistors for the control loop. The control part has a pulse width modulation (PWM) block, error amplifier, ramp generator, and oscillator. In this paper, an external capacitor for compensation has been replaced with a multiplier equivalent CMOS circuit for area reduction of integrated circuits. In addition, the circuit includes protection block, such as over voltage protection (OVP), under voltage lock out (UVLO), and thermal shutdown (TSD) block. The proposed circuit was designed and verified using a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process parameter by Cadence Spectra circuit design program. The SPICE simulation results showed a peak efficiency of 94.8 %, a ripple voltage of 3.29 mV ripple, and a 1.8 V output voltage with supply voltages ranging from 2.7 to 3.3 V.

The system stability must be ensured from the switching noise due to the power conversion efficiency and power conversion system miniaturization. Therefore, countermeasures to reduce switching noise during power conversion are essential. Thus, in the previous paper, we constructed the DC / DC Buck Converter circuit using MPQ4432 driver of MPS, and simulated the switching noise characteristics which occurs when the components are arranged differently in the 4 - layer PCB circuit structure with reference plane. In this paper, two different simulated circuits are fabricated and the characteristics of the conducted emission and the radiated emission are analyzed in the same way as the simulation. As a result, it was confirmed that the Conducted Emission characteristic was reduced by 2 ~ 9dB in the low frequency band and 6 ~ 7dB in the high frequency band depending on the configuration of the current return path. And the radiated emission characteristic is reduced by 9 dB. Conducted emission simulation results show that 6 ~ 7dB in the low frequency range and 2 ~ 9dB in the measurement result are somewhat different. In the high frequency band, it is confirmed that the experimental and simulation results are about 7dB. And Radiated Emission confirmed 12dB decrease in simulation, but confirmed decrease of 9dB in measurement result. It is confirmed that there is a slight difference in the amount of reduction, but the design of the power conversion circuit improves the noise characteristics according to the configuration of the current return path.

Currently, overall power usage is also increasing as power demand such as homes, offices, and factories increases. The increase in power use also raised interest in standby power as a change in awareness of energy saving appeared. Home and office devices are consuming power even in standby conditions. Accordingly, there is a growing need to reduce standby power, and it aims to have standby power of 1W or less. An intelligent outlet uses a near-field wireless network to connect to a home network and cut or reduce standby power of a lamp or appliance connected to an outlet. This research aims to develop a monitoring system and an intelligent outlet that can remotely monitor the amount of electricity used in a lighting lamp or a home appliance connected to an outlet using a short-range wireless network (Zigbee). Also, The intelligent outlet and monitoring system developed makes it possible for a user to easily cut off standby power by using a portable device. Intelligent outlets will not only reduce standby power but also be applicable to fire prevention systems. Devices that cut off standby power include intelligent outlets and standby power cutoff switches, so they will prevent short circuits and fires.
Multichannel automated chamber systems (MCACs) were developed for the continuous monitoring of soil CO2 efflux in forest ecosystems. The MCACs mainly consisted of four modules: eight soil chambers with lids that automatically open and close, an infrared CO2 analyzer equipped with eight multichannel gas samplers, an electronic controller with time-relay circuits, and a programmable logic datalogger. To examine the stability and reliability of the developed MCACs in the field during all seasons with a high temporal resolution, as well as the effects of temperature and soil water content on soil CO2 efflux rates, we continuously measured the soil CO2 efflux rates and micrometeorological factors at the Nam-san experimental site in a Quercus mongolica forest floor using the MCACs from January to December 2010. The diurnal and seasonal variations in soil CO2 efflux rates markedly followed the patterns of changes in temperature factors. During the entire experimental period, the soil CO2 efflux rates were strongly correlated with the temperature at a soil depth of 5 cm (r2 = 0.92) but were weakly correlated with the soil water content (r2 = 0.27). The annual sensitivity of soil CO2 efflux to temperature (Q10) in this forest ranged from 2.23 to 3.0, which was in agreement with other studies on temperate deciduous forests. The annual mean soil CO2 efflux measured by the MCACs was approximately 11.1 g CO2 m-2 day-1. These results indicate that the MCACs can be used for the continuous long-term measurements of soil CO2 efflux in the field and for simultaneously determining the impacts of micrometeorological factors.
