  • The ageing behavior of Cu-bearing HSLA steels was studied by using Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), Transmission electron microscopy and hardness tester. Two heat evolution peaks were observed during DSC scans over the temperature range of 25~590$^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate of 5$^{\circ}C$/min. The peaks appeared in low (241∼319$^{\circ}C$ : HSLA-A, 224∼310$^{\circ}C$ : HSLA-B) and high temperature (514∼590$^{\circ}C$ : HSLA-A, 451∼558$^{\circ}C$ : HSLA-B) are attributed to the formation of coherent Cu-clusters and noncoherent $\varepsilon$-Cu phase, respectively. It was confirmed that as ageing proceeds, the coherent bcc Cu-clusters transform to noncoherent fcc $\varepsilon$-Cu phase. In the case of the ageing to peak hardness at 300$^{\circ}C$ and 400$^{\circ}C$, the coherent Cu-clusters contributed to the hardening. As ageing time and temperature increase over peak hardness, noncoherent $\varepsilon$-Cu are formed and hardness decreases.

  • Low pressure radio-frequency glow discharges are investigated using theoretical modeling and various experimental diagnostic methods. In the calculations, global models and transformer models are developed to understand the chemical kinetics as well as the electrical properties such as the effective collision frequency, the heating mechanism and the power transferred to the plasma electrons. In addition, Boltzmann equation solver is used to compensate the effect of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) shape in the global model, and the general expression of energy balance for non-Maxwellian electrons is developed. In the experiments, a number of traditional plasma diagnostic methods are used to compare with calculated results such as Langmuir probe, optical emission spectroscopy (OES), optical absorption spectroscopy (OAS) and two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF). These theoretical and experimental methods are applied to understand several interesting phenomena in low pressure ICP discharges. The chemical and physical properties of low pressure ICP discharges are described and the applications of these methods are discussed.

  • The terrestrial Ca-buserite has been found from Dongnam mine, Korea. It occurs in close association with rancieite in the manganese oxide ores which were formed by supergene weathering of hydrothermal rhodochrosite in veins. A study on this mineral using X-ray diffraction, infrared, polarizing and electron microscopes and dehydration experiment shows that the natural cabuserite (10$\AA$ phase) is more or less unstable, transforming partly to rancieite (7.5 $\AA$ phase) in the natural environment, and upon heating, its 10 $\AA$ line shifts to 7.5$\AA$ at 70-9$0^{\circ}C$. The Ca-buserite is the hydrate of rancieite.

  • Formation and thermal stability of a quasicrystalline phases in Al-Fe-Mo alloys were investigated by means of melt-spinning process and subsequent heat treatment test. Thermal decomposition and phase transformation process of the as-spun alloys were studied using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. The melt-spun Al-Fe-Mo alloys contained an icosahedral quasicrystalline phase with a quasilattice constant of 0.457 nm. Icosahedral phase formed at a composition of $Al_{82.5}Fe_{14}Mo_{3.5}$ as a metastable phase during rapid solidification was transformed into the stable crystalline phases, cubic 1/0 approximant and monoclinic ${\lambda}$-phase, upon heating. A metastable icosahedral and cubic(a = 0.93 nm) phases in as-spun $Al_{65}Fe_{20}Mo_{15}$ alloy were decomposed into two cubic(a = 0.62, 0.31 nm) phases by heat treatment.

  • Carbon nitride films were grown on Si (100) substrate by a laser-electric discharge method with/without a magnetic field assistance. The magnetic field leads to vapor plume plasma expending upon the ambient arc discharge plasma area. Influence of the magnetic field has resulted in increased of a crystallite size int he films due to bombardment (heating) of Si substrates by energetic carbon and nitrogen species generated during cyclotron motion of electrons in the discharge zone. The surface morphology of the films with a deposition time of 2 hours was studied using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In order to determine the structural crystalline parameters, X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to analysis the grown films.

  • We report a new approach to fabricate electrospun polymer nonwoven mats with porous surface morphology by varying the collector temperature during electrospinning. Polymers such as poly(L-lactide) (PLLA), polystyrene (PS), and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) were dissolved in volatile solvents, namely methylene chloride (Me) and tetrahydrofuran (THF), and subjected to electrospinning. The temperature of the collector in the electrospinning device was varied by a heating system. The resulting nonwoven mats were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission SEM (FESEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). We observed that the surface morphology, porous structure, and the properties such as pore size, depth, shape, and distribution of the nonwoven mats were greatly influenced by the collector temperature.

  • The physical properties of rubber blend between natural rubber(NR) and ethylene propylene diene terpolymer(EPDM) were investigated as a study of EPDM composite materials. For EPDM/NR blends, the effects of ethylene and diene contents in EPDM, blend ratio, dicumyl peroxide(DCP) curing system on the physical properties, interfacial adhesion force and dynamic crack growth etc. were studied. EPDM/NR blends loaded with carbon black were prepared by mechanical mixing and cured by plate heating cure press. Crosslinking density was measured by swelling method with toluene. The physical properties of all blends were measured with Instron, fatigue to failure(FTF), Demattia flex cracking tester(DMFC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), etc. As the ethylene and diene contents in EPDM increased, the physical properties, such as dynamic crack growth, adhesion to other component were increased too. Interfacial adhesion force of EPDM/NR blends to dissimilar layer was improved by the use of optimum peroxide curing system.

  • Carbon nanotubes(CNT) were synthesized by arc-discharge method. To fabricate CNT sensor, CNT powder was dispersed in $\alpha$-Terpinol($C_{10}$ $H_{17}$OH) solution. The CNT films were fabricated by screen printing on the interdigitated Pt/Pd alloy electrode. The microstructure of CNT film were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In order to investigate the gas sensing characteristics of the film, the CNT film was experimented to measure NH$_3$ response and recovery time. And this sensor shows better reproductibility and faster recovery time than another CNT sensors. We suggest the possibility to utilize a CNT as new sensing materials for environmental monitoring.

  • Conformations of the +5 to +13 charge state of ubiquitin ions have been studied in the gas phase by an Electron Capture Dissociation (ECD) mass spectrometry (MS) technique. This approach has showed that the conformations of the gaseous ions change from the compact to extended structures as the number of protons on the protein ions increases, consistent with previous collisional cross-section measurements by an ion-mobility MS. However, this observation is in contrast to that of the solution-phase where the unique native structure is usually found. The (un)folding stability and kinetics of these gaseous ions were further investigated experimentally using gradual blackbody-radiation or sudden laser-induced thermal heating, respectively. These studies have provided the evidence that the thermodynamics and kinetics of protein (un)folding in the gas phase are quite different from those of the native aqueous proteins.
