Carbon has numerous allotropes and various crystalline forms with full dimensionalities such as diamond, graphite, fullerenes, and carbon nanotubes leading a wide range of applications. Since the emerge of graphene consisting of a single atomic layer of carbon atoms, a fabrication of all-carbon-based device with combination of one-, two-, and three-dimensional carbons has become a hot issue. Here, we introduce an ultimate one-dimensional carbon atomic chain. Carbon atomic chains were experimentally created by removing atoms from monolayer graphene sheet under electron beam inside transmission electron microscope (TEM). A series of TEM images demonstrate the dynamics of carbon atomic chains over time from the formation, transformation, and then breakage.

Spotted wing drosophila (SWD) has emerged as a major invasive insect pest of small berry fruits in the Americas and Europe since the late 2000s. Thus, phytosanitary treatment of commodities for export is imperative to prevent the movement of viable SWD to newer areas. In the present study, all developmental stages of SWD were irradiated with different doses of gamma and electron beam radiation to assess developmental inhibition to identify potential quarantine doses of the radiations. Ionizing radiation induced developmental inhibition of all stages of SWD. The effective doses for 99% inhibition ($ED_{99}$) of hatching, pupariation, and adult emergence from irradiated eggs for gamma radiation were 882, 395 and 39 Gy, respectively, compared with 2849, 687, and 41 Gy, respectively, for electron beam radiation. The $ED_{99}$ for inhibition of pupariation and adult emergence in irradiated larvae were 703 and 47 Gy, respectively, for gamma radiation, and 619 and 33 Gy, respectively, for electron beam radiation. Pupal irradiation did not completely inhibit adult emergence, even at 300 Gy. However, irradiation with ${\geq}100Gy$ of puparia induced adult sterility, with no egg production at all. The $ED_{99}$ for inhibition of $F_1$ egg hatchability from adults irradiated with gamma radiation and electron beam radiation was estimated to be 424 and 125 Gy, respectively. The results of the present study suggest that gamma radiation and electron beam radiation are alternatives for phytosanitary treatment. Irradiation with 100 Gy could be suggested as a potential dose for egg, larval, and pupal quarantine treatment of SWD.

$TiO_2$ films were deposited on a glass substrate with RF magnetron sputtering and then surface of $TiO_2$ films were electron beam irradiated in a vacuum condition to investigate the effect of electron bombardment on the thin film crystallization, surface roughness and gas sensitivity for hydrogen. $TiO_2$ films that electron beam irradiated at 450eV were amorphous phase, while the films irradiated at 900 eV show the anatase (101) diffraction peak in XRD pattern. AFM measurements show that the roughness is depend on the electron irradiation energy. As increase the hydrogen gas concentration and operation temperature, the gas sensitivity of $TiO_2$ and $TiO_2$/ZnO films is increased proportionally and $TiO_2$ films that electron beam irradiated at 900 eV show the higher sensitivity than the films were irradiated at 450eV. From the XRD pattern and AFM observation, it is supposed that the crystallization and rough surface promote the hydrogen gas sensitivity of $TiO_2$ films.
In this study, the effects of the electron beam irradiation on the thermal behavior and the abrasion properties of the glass fiber reinforced nylon 12 was investigated. The electron beam irradiation was carried out over a range of irradiation dose from 100 to 600 kGy with additive crosslinking agents such as triallyl cyanurate (TAC), triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) for enhancing the crosslinking effects. The gel contents were increased dramatically above 200 kGy. It was verified that the degree of crosslinking depends on the radiation dose. The decreases of the melting temperature and the area of endothermic peak were observed as increasing the absorbed dose in the results of DSC analysis. The enhanced thermal stability was confirmed by the increases of decomposition temperature by electron beam irradiation. Furthermore, the negative deviations of the abrasion loss and the abrasion coefficients confirmed the improvement of the abrasion properties of irradiated nylon 12, as evidenced by SEM observation on the abrasion surfaces. The addition of the crosslinking agents to nylon 12 during effectively improved the thermal behavior and the abrasion properties of nylon 12 by the electron beam irradiation.

This study was performed to examine the effects of electron beam irradiation on volatile flavor components of Shingo pear (Pyrus pyrifolia cv. Niitaka) and on their changes according to storing period following irradiation. Volatile flavor components in pear were extracted using simultaneous steam distillation and extraction (SDE) apparatus and analyzed by GC/MS. 46 components were identified in control whereas 45, 44, 48 and 51 components were identified in irradiated samples by electron beam at 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 3 kGy, respectively. Hexanal, n-hexanol, and (E)-2-hexenal were identified as the major volatile flavor components of all samples. The characteristic volatile flavor components of irradiated pear by electron beam were similar to those of control, and their effects depending on irradiation source were not different. In addition, there was no noticeable change in volatile flavor components of pear with storage at $4^{\circ}C$ for 30 days or with irradiation. Sensory evaluation indicated that the consumer receptiveness tended to be higher at a low level of radiation dose under 1 kGy than control, albeit not significant. Therefore, electron beam irradiation at low level of radiation dose under 1 kGy could be considered as an effective method to exterminate vermin and thus to improve the shelf-stability of pear without deterioration.
Background: The hemi-body electron beam irradiation (HBIe-) technique has been proposed for the treatment of mycosis fungoides. It spares healthy skin using an electron shield. However, shielding electrons is complicated owing to electron scattering effects. In this study, we developed a thimble-like head bolus shield that surrounds the patient's entire head to prevent irradiation of the head during HBIe-. Materials and Methods: The feasibility of a thimble-like head bolus shield was evaluated using a simplified Geant4 Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. Subsequently, the head bolus was manufactured using a three-dimensional (3D) printed mold and Ecoflex 00-30 silicone. The fabricated head bolus was experimentally validated by measuring the dose to the Rando phantom using a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) detector with clinical configuration of HBIe-. Results and Discussion: The thimble-like head bolus reduced the electron fluence by 2% compared with that without a shield in the MC simulations. In addition, an improvement in fluence degradation outside the head shield was observed. In the experimental validation using the inhouse-developed bolus shield, this head bolus reduced the electron dose to approximately 2.5% of the prescribed dose. Conclusion: A thimble-like head bolus shield for the HBIe- technique was developed and validated in this study. This bolus effectively spares healthy skin without underdosage in the region of the target skin in HBIe-.
This study determined the effect of packaging and electron beam irradiation on the quality of dried Undaria pinnatifida. Samples were air or vacuum packaged and irradiated at 7 kGy. The dried Undaria pinnatifida had total viable cells and coliform counts of 5.51 and 4.40 log CFU/g in total, respectively, and counts of 5.56 and 4.19 log CFU/g in surface. These counts were reduced by 2-4 log cycles after irradiation. Irradiation increased the lightness and yellowness of the dried Undaria pinnatifida, but not the redness. In the sensory evaluation, there were no significant differences among samples. Therefore, electron beam irradiation improves the microbial safety and quality of dried Undaria pinnatifida.

High molecular weight poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel to be expected as a candidate material for the wound-dressing was successfully prepared by electron beam (EB) irradiation. To produce PVA hydrogels with various gel fractions, degrees of swelling in water, gel strengths, and elongations, two different number-average degrees of polymerization [($P_n$)s] of PVA were adapted such as 1700 and 4000, and the PVA solution concentration and irradiation dose of EB were controlled to range of 5 $\sim$ 20% and 30 $\sim$ 100 kGy, respectively. The gel fraction and strength of PV A hydrogel were increased with increasing molecular weight of PVA, solution concentration, and irradiation dose of EB. On the contrary, the degree of swelling and elongation of PVA hydrogel were decreased. The thermal property and crystallinity related to degree of crosslinking of PVA hydrogel were examined by the analyses of differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction.
The use of electron beam irradiation was investigated to disinfect total coliforms in the secondary sewage treatment effluent. Unchlorinated secondary effluent was irradiated at different dose of 0.2~1.0 kGy by 1 MeV, ELV-4 Model electron beam accelerator. It is interesting to note that a 100 % reduction in total coliforms and total colonies were achieved until a dose of approximately 0.8 kGy. Even at low dose of 0.2 kGy, the total coliforms and total colonies were successfully inactivated to the level of satisfying the new effluent discharge guideline. Besides disinfection of total coliforms, approximately a 50% removal in biochemical oxygen demand was pronounced at a dose of 0.2 kGy. More than 20 % removal in suspended solids and turbidity was also observed at a dose of 1.0 kGy. The application of electron beam irradiation appeared to be one of options to reuse sewage treatment effluent as agricultural or industrial water.
