Analysis of Electromotive Force Characteristics for Electromagnetic Energy Harvester using Ferrofluid

  • This paper investigates the concept and implementation of an energy harvesting device using a ferrofluid sloshing movement to generate an electromotive force (EMF). Ferrofluids are often applied to energy harvesting devices because they have both magnetic properties and fluidity, and they behave similarly to a soft ferromagnetic substance. In addition, a ferrofluid can change its shape freely and generate an EMF from small vibrations. The existing energy harvesting techniques, for example those using piezoelectric and thermoelectric devices, generate minimal electric power, as low as a few micro-watts. Through flow analysis of ferrofluids and examination of the magnetic circuit characteristics of the resultant electromagnetic system, an energy harvester model based on an electromagnetic field generated by a ferrofluid is developed and proposed. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is demonstrated and its EMF characteristics are discussed based on experimental data.

  • When a squirrel cage induction motor is loaded, the electromagnetic noise can increase depending on the load current. It is due to the air gap harmonic fluxes from the rotor current induced during loading. This unfavorable noise can be anticipated by calculating the radial force waves in the air gap, vibration mode shapes of them, and stator core natural frequencies of each mode. With the experimental tests with the different rotor slot numbers, the variation of electromagnetic noise is studied between on-loaded and loaded running.

  • Chopper and sensors failures resulting from electric shock and mechanical vibration generated by rail irregularities are the serious problem deteriorating the performance in the electromagnetic suspension systems. Thus, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant control scheme with a dynamic compensator for the failure of the choppers, gap sensors and acceleration sensors in electromagnetic suspension system. The advantage of the proposed control method are demonstrated through simulation and experimental results for the levitation characteristics when the failures of the chopper and sensors occur, respectively.

  • Partial discharge is attendant physical phenomenon on electromagnetic, sounds, lightning and mechanical vibration. In this paper, we simulated GIS and measured the radiated electromagnetic wave emitted from partial discharge in $SF_6$ gas using antenna(30[MHz] ${\sim}$ 2[GHz]) and spectrum analyzer. This paper describes characteristics of radiated electromagnetic waves with distance 1 [m] between antenna and discharge source.

  • Actuator (chopper) and sensors failures resulting from electric shock and mechanical vibration generating by rail irregularities are the serious problem deteriorating the performance in the electromagnetic suspension systems. Thus, this paper proposes the reliable output feedback controller for the electromagnetic levitation systems against actuator, air-gap sensor and acceleration sensor failures. The designed controller is an extend version of a novel design technique which has the design method of the output feedback controller using dynamic compensator. The benefits of this scheme are demonstrated through the experimental results for the proposed controller against chopper, air-gap sensor and acceleration sensor failures of electromagnetic levitation system.

  • As electromagnetic systems have the complexity and high performance, they should be designed to take into account the vibration, noise and strain of mechanical aspect as well as electrical problems. Until now, mechanical approaches have been tried to analyze the subject, but it is difficult to figure out the matter in mechanical consideration. Because they are mainly related to electromagnetic phenomena. This paper deals with the theories and numerical formulations of magnetic force density. Several methods are applied to an actuator and DC machine model to calculate magnetic force density. These results are compared with the total force obtained by maxwell stress tensor and virtual work principle.

  • In magnetic systems, distribution of electromagnetic force density causes mechanical deformation, which results in noise and vibration. In this paper, Korteweg-Helmholtzs energy method and equivalent magnetic charge method are employed for comparison of their resulting distributions of force density. The force density from the Korteweg-Helmholtzs method is expresses with two Maxwell stresses on the inside and the outside fo magnetic material respectively. The other is calculated using the magnetic Coulombs law. In the numerical model of an electromagnet, their numerical results are compared. The distributions by the two methods are almost the same. And their total forces are also shown to be the same to the one calculated from the conventional Maxwell stress tensor. But the magnetic charge method is easier and more efficient in numerical calculation.

  • This paper is studied the noise and vibration characteristics analysis of the three-phase induction AC motor of the electrical forklift. And we suggest the method which the reduction orders the noise and vibration to be the mechanical. In other to investigate these characteristics, we considered the mechanical characteristics, the electromagnetic effects, and these interactions. In mechanical, we studied the characteristic of the stator, the bearing supported condition of the rotor, and the sound radiation. In electronically, this paper is considered the harmonic effect which is related the magnetic motive force (mmf) with respect to the characteristic of the slot number of the rotor and the stator and the pole number of the motor. Finally we investigated the overall noise and vibration of the induction motor by relations between the electronically harmonic and the mechanical resonance of the stator. By the analysis of the generally three-phase induction motor, we suggest the design methodology to low noise and vibration.

이동 통신 기지국 안테나의 수동 상호 변조 왜곡에 진동이 미치는 영향 분석 및 개선 방안 (Effects of Vibration on Passive Intermodulation Distortion in Mobile Base Station Antennas)

  • 본 논문은 800 MHz 대역의 CDMA 이동 통신 기지국의 안테나에서 보편적으로 발생되고 있는 수동 상호 변조 왜곡 특성에 대하여 조명해 보고 진동이 수동 상호 변조 왜곡에 미치는 영향을 분석하여 그에 대한 개선 방안을 연구하였다. 이동 통신 기지국은 대부분 건물 옥상이나 철탑 등 고지대에 위치하게 된다. 그렇기 때문에 비, 바람 등 자연 환경적인 요인이나 차량 등 생활 환경적인 요인에 의해 미세한 흔들림 곧, 진동이라는 영향을 수없이 받고 있다. 이에 착안하여 이동 통신 안테나가 진동에 의해 영향을 받고 있다는 것을 실험을 통해 입증해 냄으로써 실제 이동 통신 운용 필드에서 진동이라는 요인에 의해 안테나의 수동 상호 변조 왜곡 특성이 쉽게 열화된다는 것을 증명해 보였다. 또한, 진동에 잘 견딜 수 있는 안테나 구조에 대한 개선 방안을 제시하였고, 구조 개선 전후 안테나의 수동 상호 변조 왜곡 특성을 실험적으로 비교함으로써 그 열화 정도를 35 dB 이상 향상시킬 수 있었다.

고막을 모방한 라텍스 샘플의 미세진동 측정을 위한 마이크로 바이브로 토모그라피 시스템 개발 (Micro Vibration Measurement in a Latex Sample Mimicking the Tympanic Membrane Using Micro Vibro Tomography)

  • 본 논문에서는 비 침습적, 비 파괴적으로 샘플의 단층구조와 단층의 미세진동을 실시간으로 동시에 영상화하는 마이크로 바이브로 토모그라피(micro vibro tomography: MVT) 시스템 개발 및 미세진동 측정 방법을 제안한다. 제안한 방법은 광 간섭 단층촬영기술(optical coherence tomography: OCT)을 기반으로 하여, 샘플의 위상변이를 이용해 마이크로 단위의 움직임을 측정하는 알고리즘을 적용한 방법이다. 본 실험에서는 고막을 모방한 라텍스 샘플에 2~5 kHz 주파수의 음파를 인가시키고, 음파에 의한 샘플의 미세진동을 제안한 MVT 시스템을 이용하여 측정하였다. 그 결과, 고막 모방 샘플의 단층구조와 미세진동을 동시에 영상화할 수 있었고, 표면부의 미세진동을 MVT 표면 진동 이미지로 프로젝팅하여 고막 모방 샘플의 전체적인 진동 형태를 관찰할 수 있었다.
