  • This paper is concerned with the active vibration control of flexible cantilever beam system using electromagnetic farce actuator. The main objective of this paper is to propose the control algorithms and to implement the experimental setups for active vibration control. Dynamic equations of the electromagnetic actuator and the beam are combined to find the transfer function from the electromagnetic actuator to the laser sensor. The final transfer function is determined by considering only the first and second modes, and experiments confirm that this model works well. Several control algorithms are proposed and implemented on the experimental setups to show their efficacy. These include a PID control design, an optimal H$_2$ control design, and a fuzzy PID control design. Effectiveness and performance of the designed controller were verified by both simulation and experiment results.

  • This study is proposed a new hybrid mount having a moving-magnet type electromagnetic actuator to reduce the vibration transmitted from naval shipboard equipment to the structure of the ship's hull. Optimal design specifications are determined through experimental analysis. The detailed design of the hybrid mount is determined through several design steps with electromagnetic numerical analysis using Maxwell Software(S/W). The hybrid mount that combines a rubber mount and an electromagnetic actuator has a fail-safe function for shock resistance. The mount is fabricated and tested using a universal testing machine to evaluate the design specifications. Finally, numerical simulation of the hybrid mount is performed to confirm control performance and applicability.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze and design a new hybrid electromagnetic linear actuator for linear pumps. Solenoid linear actuator is widely used because it occupies small space due to no mechanical energy conversion system. In addition, the energy loss is very low and it has no noise. Conventional solenoid linear actuator, however, has the critical drawback of high power consumption. In this research, we present a new hybrid electromagnetic linear actuator using a permanent magnet in order to reduce power consumption. The enhanced performance of the hybrid linear actuator was verified by dynamic finite element analysis.

  • This paper performed the optimal design of electromagnetic linear actuator with divided coil excitation. The table of orthogonal array and response surface methodology (RSM) are applied to maximize the clamping force of the electromagnetic linear actuator with colenoid (COL) and multipolar solenoid (MPS) excitation. The analysis results show that the clamping force of the optimal models with COL and MPS excitation are increased by 41% and 54% at the gap of 0mm compared to the initial models, respectively.

  • As the most precision equipment requiring very strict vibration environment are vulnerable to the surrounding vibration condition, they adapt the passive or active vibration isolation system. When it comes to the passive isolation system, the resonance of the isolation system causes excessive resonance response, and finally results in the degrade the equipment performance. This paper deals with the active control method to control this resonance induced response, and includes the experiment on the active control for controlling the resonance response on the table against the excitation of the same frequency with the natural frequency of the isolation system. The electromagnetic actuator was designed and the control effect was verified by the experiment. The experiment showed that the electromagnetic actuator is effective for controlling the low frequency isolation resonance response of the precision equipment.

  • An electromagnetic linear actuator is controlled precisely and securely and is useful in devices that require linear motion. The most commonly used method in the performance verification process for an electromagnetic actuator is finite element analysis that utilizes CAE. However, finite element analysis has the disadvantage that modeling and analysis consume a lot of time. Accordingly, lumped parameter analysis can be an alternative approach to the finite element method because of its computation iteration capability with fair accuracy. In this paper, the lumped parameter model and simulation results are presented. In addition, the results of the lumped parameter analysis are compared with those obtained from finite element analysis for verification.

  • In this paper, we propose the integrated design method that enables multi-physics modeling and coupled-field analysis by connecting an electromagnetic field and a structural field. We design the 3-axis moving magnet type actuator that has the high structural stiffness and the effective electromagnetic circuit generating large electromagnetic force. Through design of experiments (DOE) and optimization, the designed actuator is optimized and satisfies high dynamic characteristics over the desired specifications.

  • Electromagnetic actuators are versatile and able to meet demanding requirements, such as operation in very low or very high temperatures. When the actuator is used in a high-temperature environment up to $500^{\circ}C$, we need to know how the force-producing capability of the actuator is affected by the operating temperature. Specifically, it is necessary to know the temperature-dependence of magnetic properties that determine the mechanical forces. In this paper, we measure the changes in magnetic properties of SUS410 material in high-temperature environment. We also devise a novel signal processing technique to remove the integration drift. At the field strength of 18,000 A/m, we found that the flux density at $500^{\circ}C$ is decreased by 26%, compared to the result at room temperature. Therefore, the actuator must be sized appropriately, if it is to operate in high-temperature settings.

  • An electromechanical type is the most useful mechanism in the various pumping mechanisms. It, however, requires a movement converting system including a ball screw, a helical cam, or a solenoid-beam spring, which makes the device complex and may lessen reliability. Thus, the authors have hypothesized that an electromagnetic actuator mechanism can eliminate the movement converting system and that thereby enhance the mechanical reliability and operative simplicity of an electropneumatic pump. The purpose of this study was to show a novel application of electromagnetic actuator mechanism in pulsatile pump and to provide preliminary data for further evaluations. The electromagnetic actuator consists of stators with a single winding excitation coil and movers with a high energy density neodymium-iron-boron permanent magnet. A 0.5mm diameter wire was used for the excitation coil, and 1000 turns were wound onto the stators core with parallel. A prototype of extracorporeal electro-pneumatic pump was constructed, and the pump performance tests were performed using a mock system to evaluate the efficiency of the electromagnetic actuator mechanism. When forward and backward electric currents were supplied to the excitation coil, the mover effectively moved back and forth. The nominal stroke length of the actuator was 10mm. The actuator dimension was 120mm in diameter and 65mm in height with a mass of 1.4kg. The prototype pump unit was 150mm in diameter, 150mm in thickness and 4.5kg in weight. The maximum force output was 70N at input current of 4.5A and the maximum pump rate was 150 beats per minute. The maximum output was 2.0 L/minute at a rate of 80bpm when the afterload was 100mmHg. The electromagnetic actuator mechanism was successfully applied to construct the prototype of extracorporeal electropneumatic pump. The authors provide the above results as a preliminary data for further studies.

  • To increase the retaining force, a novel design for a concentric, bi-directional, electromagnetic valve actuator that contains double-layer permanent magnets is presented in this paper. To analyze the retaining-force change caused by the magnets, an equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) model is established, while the EMC circuit of a double-layer permanent-magnet valve actuator (DLMVA) is also designed. Based on a 3D finite element method (FEM), the calculation model is built for the optimization of the key DLMVA parameters, and the valve-actuator optimization results are adopted for the improvement of the DLMVA design. A prototype actuator is manufactured, and the corresponding test results show that the actuator satisfies the requirements of a high retaining force under a volume limitation; furthermore, the design of the permanent magnets in the DLMVA allow for the attainment of both a high initial output force and a retaining force of more than 100 N.
