  • The accuracy of extracting the azimuth angle of a target is significantly affected by the error in the mono-pulse ratio of the air-borne antenna hybrid mono-pulse Radar system. This error is strongly induced by the phase imbalance between the channels of the system. In this paper, a method is proposed for effectively calibrating the phase imbalance caused by physical differences between the RF channels from the antenna to the $180^{\circ}$ hybrid. Through a flight test, it was confirmed that the accuracy of the azimuth angle of the target is improved by using the proposed method.

  • The traveling wave tube amplifier (TWTA), which can be applied to the Ka-band millimeter-wave multi-mode seeker, consists of an high voltage power supply(HVPS), a grid modulator, a command and control, and an RF assembly. We designed a power supply that generates a -17.9 kV high voltage by synchronizing the pulse repetition frequency(PRF) and power supply switching frequency(i.e. synchronization frequency), and a high-speed grid-switching modulator for RF pulse modulation. The TWTA, which is fabricated through miniaturization with a volume of 3.18 L, has high pulse switching characteristics of up to 18.5 ns. The maximum rise/fall time of the grid on/bias signal and peak power is more than 564.9 W. Moreover, an excellent spurious performance of -68.4 dBc or less was confirmed within the range of PRF and PRF/2.

  • In this paper, the SA (Specific Absorption) distribution in a human head, exposed to wideband pulse EMF, has been analyzed by taking into account the dispersion characteristics of biological tissues. The dispersive properties of biological tissues are characterized by the 4th Cole-Cole model. Currently, there is no dispersive FDTD algorithm to implement the 4th Cole-Cole model accurately. Thus, in this paper the FDTD methods with the dispersive algorithm for the 1st-order Cole-Cole model and the 3rd-order Debye model were used for SA analysis. The validity of each model has been investigated first, and then the effects of dispersion on SA distribution have been studied.

  • Additional metal shielding is installed in the water pipes used in septic tanks to protect against damage from electromagnetic pulse (EMP) events. This shielding prevents EMP damage, but impurities present in water cannot pass through the shielding structure. Thus, the original function of the water pipes is lost as the pipes are blocked, and an additional maintenance workforce is needed to manage this blockage. To solve this problem, we propose a water pipe without an additional shielding structure; the proposed pipe was designed with consideration of the attenuation characteristics of water. The immersed depth was varied from 400 mm to 800 mm, while the diameter of the pipe was fixed at 100 mm. The shielding effectiveness increased from 70 dB to 100 dB around 2 GHz. Through the verification process, we propose an effective design guideline that can maintain the function of the water pipe and provide protection from EMP damages without additional shielding structure.

  • This study analyzed the Vulnerability of Network Communication devices when IEMI is coupled with the Network System. An Ultra Wide Band Generator (180 kV, 700 MHz) was used as the IEMI source. The EUTs are the Switch Hub and Workstation, which are used to configure the network system. The network system was monitored through the LAN system configuration, to confirm a malfunction of the network device. The results of the experiment indicate that a malfunction of the network occurs as the electric field increases. The data loss rate increases proportionally with increasing radiating time. In the case of the Switch Hub, the threshold electric field value was 10 kV/m for all conditions used in this experiment. The threshold point causing malfunction was influenced only by the electric field value. The correlation between the threshold point and pulse repetition rate was not found. However, in case of the Workstation, it was found that as the pulse repetition rate increases, the equipment responds weakly and the threshold value decreases. To verify the electrical coupling of the EUT by IEMI, current sensors were used to measure the PCB line inside the EUT and network line coupling current. As a result of the measurement, it can be inferred that when the coupling current due to IEMI exceeds the threshold value, it flows through the internal equipment line, causing a malfunction and subsequent failure. The results of this study can be applied to basic data for equipment protection, and effect analysis of intentional electromagnetic interference.

  • We herein propose a calibration method for a sampling oscilloscope. The proposed method can correct the systematic errors in the oscilloscope such as time-based distortion and impedance mismatch. In addition, it can accurately estimate the residual jitter that remains after a time-based correction and the scale factor that varies in accordance with the setting of the pulse generator. The proposed method is validated thorough the comparison and verification with the power meter, and the uncertainty of the measurement method is analyzed.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of pulsed electromagnetic fields on the expression of neurotrophic factors after spinal cord injury. Sprague-Dawley male rats were given a spinal cord hemisection and randomly divided into 2 groups, the control and experimental groups. The experimental group was administered a fifteen minutes session of pulsed electromagnetic field once a day, five days a week. In order to observe the effect of these pulsed electromagnetic fields, this study observed the BDNF expression in the rat's lumbar spinal cord and the H&E staining in the gastrocnemius at 3, 7, 14, 21 days group after spinal cord hemisection. The results of this showed that the immunoreactivity of the BDNF in the rat's spinal cord gradually increased in each group. At 21 days, there is a significant difference between the control and experimental groups. The morphological shape of the gastrocnemius was gradually changed from 3days to 21days, and the gastrocnemius at 21 days was significantly degraded. However, the experimental group showed a slightly more organized gastrocnemius than the control group at 21days. The Results of this study suggest that pulsed electromagnetic field application decreases the degeneration of a rat's gastrocnemius morphology, and increases the immunoreactivity of the BDNF in the rat's spinal cord after spinal cord hemisection.

  • In this paper, X-band 60 W Solid-State Power Amplifier with sequential control circuit and pulse width variation circuit for improve bias of SSPA module was designed. The sequential control circuit operate in regular sequence drain bias switching of GaAs FET. The distortion and efficiency of output signals due to SSPA nonlinear degradation is increased by making operate in regular sequence the drain bias wider than that of RF input signals pulse width if only input signal using pulsed width variation. The GaAs FETs are used for the 60 W SSPA module which is consists of 3-stage modules, pre-amplifier stage, driver-amplifier stage and main-power amplifier stage. The main power amplifier stage is implemented with the power combiner, as a balanced amplifier structure, to obtain the power greater than 60 W. The designed SSPA modules has 50 dB gain, pulse period 1 msec, pulse width 100 us, 10 % duty cycle and 60 watts output power in the frequency range of 9.2~9.6 GHz and it can be applied to solid-state pulse compression radar using pulse SSPA.

  • A novel method for extracting frequency slippage signal from radar full pulse sequence is presented. For the radar full pulse sequence received by radar interception receiver, radio frequency (RF) and time of arrival (TOA) of all pulses constitute a two-dimensional information sequence. In a complex and intensive electromagnetic environment, the TOA of pulses is distributed unevenly, randomly, and in a nonstationary manner, preventing existing methods from directly analyzing such time series and effectively extracting certain signal features. This work applies Gaussian noise insertion and structure function to the TOA-RF information sequence respectively such that the equalization of time intervals and correlation processing are accomplished. The components with different frequencies in structure function series are separated using empirical mode decomposition. Additionally, a chaos detection model based on the Duffing equation is introduced to determine the useful component and extract the changing features of RF. Experimental results indicate that the proposed methodology can successfully extract the slippage signal effectively in the case that multiple radar pulse sequences overlap.
