  • This paper proposes a new modeling method for estimating the impedance of an on-chip power/ground meshed plane. Frequency dependent R, L, and C parameters are extracted based on the proposed method so that the model can be applied from DC to high frequencies. The meshed plane model is composed of two parts: coplanar multi strip (CMS) and conductor-backed CMS. The conformal mapping technique and the scaled conductivity concept are used for accurate modeling of the CMS. The developed microstrip approach is applied to model the conductor-backed CMS. The proposed modeling method has been successfully verified by comparing the impedance of RLC circuit based on extracted parameters and the simulated impedance using a 3D-field solver.

  • In this paper, the electromagnetic shielding performance of a BiMODAL Tram is investigated by means of an electromagnetic analysis tool, called HFSS. For the purposed of doing this, first, three-dimensional finite element modeling for the tram including electronic devices and engine room is carried out. Then, for quantitatively assessing the electromagnetic shielding performance of the tram's body, concentration indexes for electric field magnitude and time-average stored electric energy are introduced. From numerical results, it is inferred that the tram's body can protect the electronic devices and engine room against external electromagnetic waves from 30 MHz to 100 MHz.

  • This paper gives a electromagnetic coupling mechanism of the high altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) into large- scale underground multilayer structures using analytic and numerical methods. The modeling methods are firstly addressed to the HEMP source which can be generated by intentional nuclear explosion. The instantaneous and intense electromagnetic pulse of the HEMP source is concerned from DC to 100 MHz band, because the power spectrum of the HEMP is rapidly decreased under -30 dB over the 100 MHz band. Through this range, a penetrated electric field distribution is computed within the large-scale underground multilayer structures. As a result, the penetrated electric field intensities at 0.1 and 1 MHz are about 10 and 5 kV/m, respectively. Therefore, additional shielding techniques are introduced to protect buried structures within the large-scale underground structures such as high-lossy material and filtering structures (wire screen).

  • Interpretation of time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) data has been made mostly based on one-dimensional (1-D) inversion scheme in Korea. A proper interpretation of TEM data should employ 3-D TEM forward and inverse modeling algorithms. This study developed a 3-D TEM modeling algorithm using a finite difference time-domain (FDTD) method with staggered grid. In numerically solving Maxwell equations, fictitious displacement current is included based on an explicit FDTD method using a central difference approximation scheme. The developed modeling algorithm simulated a small-coil source configuration to be verified against analytic solutions for homogeneous half-space models. Further, TEM responses for a 3-D anomaly are modeled and analyzed. We expect that it will contribute greatly to the precise interpretation of TEM data.

  • We analyzed response patterns of test field data acquired with new small loop electromagnetic (EM) system using three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic modeling code. The size and shape of a conductor was adopted as experimental parameters for EM modeling to understand influencing factors of the response patterns due to a metallic object on the seafloor. Obtaining the responses for four models of difference sizes and shapes through 3D EM modeling, we confirmed that the shape of the object have a more critical factor on the response pattern than size. We also calculated "ppm" values with respect to different altitudes of the sensor and source frequencies. The modeling results show that the consistency of sensor altitude is important and imaginary part of ppm response is more sensitive than real part. We also visualized the contour map of the real and imaginary part of ppm value as a function of frequency and altitude so that we can estimate proper altitude for source frequency band of our survey system. The results of this paper are anticipated to give proper parameters in survey construction for seafloor massive sulfide deposit.

  • Utilizing first-order beam dynamics models is adequate for studying the beam properties during the conceptual design of a cyclotron-based proton therapy beamline. After finishing lattice design, particle-matter interaction simulations for passive elements (e.g., degrader, collimators, energy slit) are required. The cascade simulation is used for lattice updates in each iteration, which is complicated. In addition, when the models involve particle tracking and particle-matter interaction, their optimization process is time-consuming. Therefore, this study proposes a start-to-end modeling method using Monte Carlo Beam Delivery Simulation (BDSIM) software that considers more realistic factors, such as particle-matter interaction and the realistic vacuum chamber, to precisely evaluate working parameters, along with an efficient optimization method that utilizes multi-objective Bayesian optimization (MOBO) to improve transmission efficiency. Taking the Huazhong University of Science and Technology proton therapy facility (HUST-PTF) as an example, beam loss along the beamline is located, quantified, and subsequently reduced by tuning the quadrupole strengths based on MOBO. The results show that: (i) By considering the particle-matter interaction and the realistic vacuum chamber, the precision in the prediction of the beam properties is improved; (ii) After optimization, the transmission efficiency of the entire beamline is relatively increased by an average of 6.52 % under different energy settings, especially 11.39 % at 70 MeV.

  • This paper describes a low frequency driven electromagnetic energy harvester (EMEH) which consists of a thin flame resistant (FR-4) planar spring, NdFeB permanent magnets, and a copper coil. The FR-4 spring was fabricated using a desk computer numerical control (CNC) 3D modeling machine. Mathematical modeling and ANSYS finite element analysis (FEA) were used totheoretically investigate the mechanical properties of the spring mass system. The proposed EMEH generates a maximum power of 65.33 ${\mu}W$ at a resonance frequency of 8 Hz with an acceleration of 0.2 g (1 g = 9.8 $m/s^2$) and a superior normalized power density (NPD) of 77 ${\mu}W/cm^3{\cdot}g^2$.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm to improve the correlation between giga-hertz transverse electromagnetic (GTEM) cell and open area test site (OATS). It is based on the dipole modeling process of an unknown source object in a GTEM cell and on the evaluation of the approximate far field equations correlated with measured GTEM powers at output port of the GTEM cell. In this algorithm, the relative phase differences between dipole moments play an important part in modeling the test object as a set of dipoles and offer stable calculation of emission values. The radiated emission test using this algorithm requires fifteen orientations of equipment under test, but the increased orientations as compared with the previous method have little effect on the time needed for testing. Radiation from a notebook computer has been tested for statistical analysis of the correlation between GTEM data and OATS data. The emission test results of the notebook computer show that the mean, the standard deviation, and the correlation coefficient are -0.62, 1.99, and +0.85, respectively. These figures indicate that this algorithm provides improved accuracy in the measurement of electromagnetic emissions over the previous method.

  • Numerical modeling for electromagnetic exploration methods are essential to understand behaviours of electromagnetic fields in complex subsurfaces. In this study, a finite element method was adopted as a numerical scheme for the 2.5-dimensional forward problem. And a finite element equation considering linear conductivity variation was proposed when 2.5-dimensional differential equation to couple eletric and magnetic field was implemented. Model parameters were investigated for near-field with large source effects and far-field with responses dominantly by homogeneous half-space. Numerical responses by this study were compared with analytic solutions in homogeneous half-space and compared with other three dimensional numerical results.

  • This study proposes a modeling process of equivalent terrains to reduce the computational load and time of a full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation. To verify the suitability of the proposed process, an original terrain model with a size of $3m{\times}3m$ is equivalently quantized based on the minimum range resolution of a radar, and the radar image of the quantized model is compared with that of the original model. The results confirm that the simulation time can be reduced from 407 hours to 162 hours without a significant distortion of the radar images, and an average estimation error of the quantized model (20.4 mm) is similar to that of the original model (20.3 mm).
