  • This paper describes the design, simulation and characterization of an AA size electromagnetic energy harvester that is capable of converting environmental vibration into electrical energy. A magnetic spring technique is used to scavenge energy from low frequency external vibrations. The generator is characterized by ANSYS 2D finite element analysis, and optimized in terms of moving mass, fixed magnet size, coil width and load resistance. The optimized energy harvester is able to generate 53.5 mW of average power at 8.1 Hz resonance frequency, with a displacement of 0.5 mm.

  • A Linear induction electromagnetic(EM) pump of liquid metal fast breeder reactor(LMFBR) is used for the purpose that the liquid metal of high temperature is transported by EM force. This paper evaluates magnetic flux density necessary for transporting liquid metal, using analytical model of the linear induction EM pump. Using the 2-D finite element method(2-D FEM), magnetic flux density is estimated in consideration of a geometric model, electric parameter, and velocity of liquid metal. From the viewpoint of hydrodynamics, the results can be used for flow analysis of the liquid metal.

  • This work proposes a two-dimensional (2-D) laser scanning mirror actuator with a simple structure composed of one magnet and four coils. The mirror-actuating device generates 2-D scanning motions about two orthogonal axes by combining electromagnetic actuators of the conventional moving-magnet types. The magnet is attached to back side of the mirror placed inside of the moving frame. The four coils is placed on the base frame in a cross shape. We implement a finite element analysis to calculate magnetic flux in the electromagnetic system with the overall size of $20mm(W){\times}20mm(D){\times}13mm(H)$ for the mirror size of $8mm{\times}8mm$. The each moving-magnet type electromagnetic actuator has the motor constant 3.41 mNm/A and the restoring constant 1.75 mNm/rad and the resonance frequency of 58 Hz and the bandwidth of 80 Hz. The proposed compact and simple 2-D scanning mirror predicted advantages of large 2-D angular deflections, wide frequency bandwidth and low manufacturing cost.

  • There are few reports of high frequency loss behavior in the near-field for magnetic films with semiconducting properties, even though semiconducting magnetic materials, such as soft magnetic amorphous alloys and nanocrystalline thin films, have been demonstrated. The electromagnetic loss behavior of multilayer magnetic films with semiconducting properties on the microstrip line in quasi-microwave frequency band was analyzed numerically using a commercial finite-element based electromagnetic solver. The large increase in the absorption performance and broadband characteristics of the semiconducting/insulating layer magnetic films examined in this study were attributed to an increase in the loss factor of resistive loss. The electromagnetic reflection increased significantly with increasing conductivity, and the loss power deteriorated significantly. The numerical results of the magnetic field distribution showed that a strong radiated signal on the microstrip line was emitted with increasing conductivity and decreasing film thickness due to re-reflection of the radiated wave from the surface of the magnetic film, even though the emitted levels varied with film thickness.

  • Electromagnetic Forming is a high speed forming technology which uses electromagnetic (Lorentz’s) forces to shape sheet metal parts. In the current study the effect of the tool-sheet interaction during electromagnetic forming on formability enhancement is investigated using FEM. The decrease in void volume fraction by having the sheet contact with die helps to improve formability. The main purpose of the current study was to predict improvement of formed sheets whether the sheet contacts or does not contact the die under experimental conditions and 3-D finite element analysis. The results show that fractures caused by the voids in the forming sheet appear only in some specific cases and the bulge height of the conical shape was shorter than the height with a free bulge. For the same height conditions, however, the formability was improved for the conical-shaped die when there is sheet contact with the die.

  • This paper focuses on the design of a flux-biased rotary electromagnetic actuator with compact structure for fast steering mirror (FSM). The actuator has high force density and its torque output shows linear dependence on both excitation current and rotation angle. Benefiting from a new electromagnetic topology, no additional axial force is generated and an armature with small moment of inertia is achieved. To improve modeling accuracy, the actuator is modeled with flux leakage taken into account. In order to achieve an FSM with good performance, a design methodology is presented. The methodology aims to achieve a balance between torque output, torque density and required coil magnetomotive force. By using the design methodology, the actuator which will be used to drive our FSM is achieved. The finite element simulation results validate the design results, along with the concept design, magnetic analysis and torque output model.

  • Mathematically, the Electromagnetic phenomena can be represented by the Maxwell's equations, but it is very difficult to solve these equations, especially, having complex structural boundaries. By the way, the development of a computer system made us easy to solve these kind of partial differential equations. The Finite Element Method, one of the numerical methods, is very this. This paper shows the power of F.E.M. by examining, with an example of a hollow cylinder in a uniform magnetic field which is analytically solvable, the errors and the tendency of magnetic flux lines.

  • In order to optimize systematically the shape of electromagnetic devices, two sensitivity analyses, one based on finite element method and the other based on variational formulae and material derivative in continuum mechanics, are proposed. These are applied to eddy current problem of time-varying field and verified these usefulness.

In this study, not only the theoretical design of high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer but also the arrangements of superconducting tape and the cooling method have been conducted. Moreover, electromagnetic analyses using finite element method (FEM) were conducted to confirm the efficiency of the designed transformer.

  • This paper proposes a novel structured 3-DOF(Degree-of-Freedom) spherical motor. 3-DOF spherical motor presents some attractive features by combining pitch, roll, yaw motion in a single joint. The proposed motor has pole which is electromagnetic in stator and rotor. poles produce magnetic flux through by exciting current then produce torque. We show a novel structured rotor to avoid mechanical overlapping of each coil in rotor. The validity of the analysis is confirmed by 3D finite element method.
