  • The SERS spectra of 4-aminobenzenethiol (ABT) have served as the "probe" molecule, which have helped spectroscopists to build up the electromagnetic (EM) and chemical (CHEM) enhancement mechanisms. In particular, the b2-peaks (9b, 3, and 19b) of the SERS spectra of ABT have been attributed to arise from the vibronic charge-transfer (CT) between Au or Ag surface and the ABT. Quite recently, however, Tian and co-workers [1] claimed that the b2-peaks are not the CT-enhanced spectra of ABT. Instead, these peaks arise from the 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzenes (DMABs) that are produced by the oxidative coupling of two ABTs. Their claim is under intense debate currently. Herein, we studied spatially and temporally resolved SERS spectra of ABTs on Ag thin film (thickness of 10 nm), to investigate such claim. Herein, we present a series of additional evidences that strongly support that the b2 intensities of ABTs do not arise from the CT-enhancement: (1) the b2-peaks can be locally "activated" (i. e. turned on) irreversibly with focused laser radiation; (2) the TOF-SIM spectrometry on the activated region show depletion of ABT-Ag+ ions; and finally (3) the spatially resolved FT-IR spectra of the activated region show two pronounced peaks at 1377 cm-1 and 1460 cm-1, both of which can be assigned to the stretching mode of N=N bond. While the result does not disprove the existence of CT or CHEM enhancement in general, the results do show that previous interpretations of the spectra of ABTs should be re-interpreted.

  • In this paper, the design and implementation of the novel RF front end circuit for CDMA based PCS phone is described. This novel scheme is realized by building the power amplifier module combined with duplexer. The dielectric filters which are parts of duplexer are broken up and relocated into the module. Electromagnetic analysis for via holes and coupling between narrow transmissio lines is icluded to design a circuit. The combined moule has been minimaturized to be as small as 1.5CC. It has satisfied IS-95 requirements for linearity performances of CDMA signal at 24-dBm output power as well as played apart as a duplexer. The operating current of about 95mA has been saved owing to both rearranging dielectric filters and limiting operating point to class-B by considering real working power range of CDMA phones.

  • Electromagnetic scattering by finite number of conducting strips loaded on a grounded dielectric is considered for the TM polarization case from the viewpoints of transmitting(receiving) leaky wave antenna and grating coupler. An integro-differential equation whose unknowns are the induced currents over the strips is derived and solved by use of the method of moments. In order to construct the non-uniform leaky wave structures with specific source(current) distributions over the strips, distances between two adjacent strips and strip width are simultaneously varied along the structure. From some results for the current distributions over the strips and surface wave powers, it is observed that the maximum coupling efficiencies of the appropriately constructed non-uniform leaky wave structures from the viewpoints of both a receiving leaky wave antenna and a grating coupler amount upto 95%, which are about 15% improvements compared with those(80%) of the uniform structures.

  • This paper studies the harmonic characteristics of ship electric propulsion systems and their treatment methods. It also adopts effective measures to suppress and prevent ship power systems from affecting ship operation due to the serious damage caused by harmonics. Firstly, the harmonic characteristics of a ship electric propulsion system are reviewed and discussed. Secondly, aiming at problems such as resonant frequency and filter characteristics variations, resonance point migration, and unstable filtering performances in conventional passive filters, a method for fully tuning of a passive dynamic tunable filter (PDTF) is proposed to realize harmonic suppression. Thirdly, to address the problems of the uncontrollable inductance L of traditional air gap iron core reactors and the harmonics of power electronic impedance converters (PEICs), this paper proposes an electromagnetic coupling reactor with impedance transformation and harmonic suppression characteristics (ECRITHS), with the internal filter (IF) designed to suppress the harmonics generated by PEICs. The ECRITHS is characterized by both harmonic suppression and impedance change. Fourthly, the ECRITHS is investigated. This investigation includes the harmonic suppression characteristics and impedance transformation characteristics of the ECRITHS at the fundamental frequency, which shows the good performance of the ECRITHS. Simulation and experimental evaluations of the PDTF are carried out. Multiple PDTFs can be configured to realize multi-order simultaneous dynamic filtering, and can effectively eliminate the current harmonics of ship electric propulsion systems. This is done to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the supply currents to well below the 5% limit imposed by the IEEE-519 standard. The PDTF also can eliminate harmonic currents in different geographic places by using a low voltage distribution system. Finally, a detailed discussion is presented, with challenges and future implications discussed. The research results are intended to effectively eliminate the harmonics of ship electric power propulsion systems and to improve the power quality of ship power systems. This is of theoretical and practical significance for improving the power quality and power savings of ship power systems.

  • The electromagnetic and thermal properties of a heavy fermion $CeNi_2Ge_2$ are investigated using first-principle methods with local density approximation (LDA) and fully relativistic approaches. The Ce f-bands are located near the Fermi energy $E_F$ and hybridized with the Ni-3d states. This hybridization plays important roles in the characteristics of this material. The fully relativistic approach shows that the 4f states split into $4f_{7/2}$ and $4f_{5/2}$ states due to spin-orbit coupling effects. It can be found that within the LDA calculation, the density of states near the Fermi level are mainly of Ce-derived 4f states. The Ni-derived 3d states have high peaks around -1.7eV and spreaded over wide range around the Fermi level. The calculated magnetic of $CeNi_2Ge_2$ with LDA method does not match with that of experimental result because of strong correlation interaction between electrons in f orbitals. The calculations show that the specific heat coefficient underestimates the experimental value by a factor of 19.1. The discrepancy between the band calculation and experiment for specific heat coefficient is attributed to the formation of a quasiparticle. Because of the volume contraction, the exchange interaction between the f states and the conduction electrons is large in $CeNi_2Ge_2$, which increases the quasiparticle mass. This will result in the enhancement of the specific hear coefficient.

  • For higher sensitivity in ultraviolet (UV) and even vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) detection of silicon-based sensors, a sandwich-structured film sensor based on Ag Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) was designed and fabricated. This film sensor was composed of a Ag nanoparticles (NPs) layer, SiO2 buffer and fluorescence layer by physical vapour deposition and thermal annealing. By tuning the annealing temperature and adding the SiO2 layer, the resonance absorption wavelength of Ag NPs matched with the emission wavelength of the fluorescence layer. Due to the strong plasmon resonance coupling and electromagnetic field formed on the surface of Ag NPs, the radiative recombination rate of the luminescent materials and the number of fluorescent molecules in the excited state increased. Therefore, the fluorescent emission intensity of the sandwich-structured film sensor was 1.10-1.58 times at 120-200 nm and 2.17-2.93 times at 240-360 nm that of the single-layer film sensor. A feasible method is provided for improving the detection performance of UV and VUV detectors.

  • In this paper, the optimal placement of the rotary wing's communication and navigation antennas was evaluated by measuring their performance through ground simulations and flight tests. To select the mounting position of the communication and navigation antenna on the helicopter, after considering the shape and characteristics of the airframe, the radiation patterns, coupling analysis, equipment operation profiles, and antenna type analysis were performed for the aircraft-mounted antenna. Based on the analysis results, a procedure for sequentially performing voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) measurement and antenna pattern test was established through ground and flight tests of the antenna. The systematic performance measurement method and procedure proposed in this paper were verified through ground and flight tests of the Light Armed Helicopter (LAH) system.

  • This paper describes a shaped-beam antenna for increasing the antenna gain of a radiating element. The proposed antenna structure is composed of an exciting element and a multi-layered disk array structure(MDAS). The stack micro-strip patch elements were used as the exciter for effectively radiating the electromagnetic power to the MDAS over the broadband, and finite metallic disk array elements - which give the role of a director for shaping the antenna beam with the high gain - were finitely and periodically layered onto it. The efficient power coupling between the exciter and the MDAS should be carried out in such a way that the proposed antenna has a high gain characteristic. The design parameters of the exciter and the MDAS should be optimized together to meet the required specifications to meet the required specifications. In this study, a shaped-beam antenna with high gain was optimally designed under the operating conditions with a linear polarization and the frequency band of $9.6{\sim}10.4\;GHz$. Two methods constructed using thin dielectric film and dielectric foam materials respectively were also proposed in order to implement the MBAS of the antenna. In particular, through the computer simulation process, the electrical performance variations of the antenna with the MDAS realized by the thin dielectric film materials were shown according to the number of disk array elements in the stack layer. Two kinds of antenna breadboard with the MDAS realized with the thin dielectric film and dielectric foam materials were fabricated, but experimentation was conducted only on the antenna breadboard(Type 1) with the MDAS realized with the thin dielectric film materials according to the number of disk array elements in the stack layer in order to compare it with the electrical performance variations obtained during the simulation. The measured antenna gain performance was found to be in good agreement with the simulated one, and showed the periodicity of the antenna gain variations according to the stack layer number of the disk array elements. The electrical performance of the Type 1 antenna was measured at the center frequency of 10 GHz. As the disk away elements became the ten stacks, a maximum antenna gain of 15.65 dBi was obtained, and the measured return loss was not less than 11.4 dB within the operating band. Therefore, a 5 dB gain improvement of the Type 1 antenna can be obtained by the MDAS that is excited by the stack microstrip patch elements. As the disk array elements became the twelve stacks, the antenna gain of the Type 1 was measured to be 1.35 dB more than the antenna gain of the Type 2 by the outer dielectric ring effect, and the 3 dB beam widths measured from the two antenna breadboards were about $28^{\circ}$ and $36^{\circ}$ respectively.

  • A nanogap formed by a metal nanoparticle and a flat metal substrate is one kind of "hot site" for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The characteristics of a typical nanogap formed by a planar Au and either an Au and Ag nanoparticle have been well studied using 4-aminobenzenethiol (4-ABT) as a probe. 4-ABT is, however, an unusual molecule in the sense that its SERS spectral feature is dependent not only on the kinds of SERS substrates but also on the measurement conditions; thus further characterization is required using other adsorbate molecules such as 1,4-phenylenediisocyanide (1,4-PDI). In fact, no Raman signal was observable when 1,4-PDI was selfassembled on a flat Au substrate, but a distinct spectrum was obtained when 60 nm-sized Au or Ag nanoparticles were adsorbed on the pendent -NC groups of 1,4-PDI. This is definitely due to the electromagnetic coupling between the localized surface plasmon of Au or Ag nanoparticle with the surface plasmon polariton of the planar Au substrate, allowing an intense electric field to be induced in the gap between them. A higher Raman signal was observed when Ag nanoparticles were attached to 1,4-PDI, irrespective of the excitation wavelength, and especially the highest Raman signal was measured at the 632.8 nm excitation (with the enhancement factor on the order of ${\sim}10^3$), followed by the excitation at 568 and 514.5 nm, in agreement with the finite-difference timedomain calculation. From a separate potential-dependent SERS study, the voltage applied to the planar Au appeared to be transmitted without loss to the Au or Ag nanoparticles, and from the study of the effect of volatile organics, the voltage transmission from Au or Ag nanoparticles to the planar Au also appeared as equally probable to that from the planar Au to the Au or Ag nanoparticles in a nanogap electrode. The response of the Au-Ag nanogap to the external stimuli was, however, not the same as that of the Au-Au nanogap.

  • 4WD technology is being actively applied to passenger cars. Therefore, dry multi-plate clutches are used for transfer cases. On the other hand, dry clutches have problems related to large vibrations and poor ride quality. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a multi-plate clutch with an MR fluid. When fastening the multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, the proposed MR clutch was applied to reduce the shock and friction, which is a key component in a four-wheel-drive system. MR multi-plate clutch has a fluid coupling mode and a compression mode. A torque model equation was derived for the optimal design. The analysis was performed using Ansys Maxwell to optimize the design parameters of the multi-plate clutch. Electromagnetic field analysis confirmed the strength of the magnetic field when the number of disks and plates were changed, and the maximum strength of the magnetic field was 0.45 Tesla. By applying this to the torque equation, the spacing between the plates was 2 mm, and the inner and outer diameters of the plates were selected to be 45 mm and 55 mm, respectively. Overall, this paper proposes an optimal design technique to maximize the performance of an MR multi-plate clutch.
