  • The positive column discharge characteristics in the long gap (440 ${\mu}m$) are investigated based on the voltage distribution among three electrodes. In particular, the effects of the amplitude and width of the short pulse applied to the address electrode on the positive column discharge characteristics are examined intensively. By proper controlling of the amplitude and width of the address short pulse, it is found that the positive column discharge in the long gap is well constructed. As a result, under the stable static voltage margin condition, the firing and sustaining voltages are as low as those of conventional short gap(60 ${\mu}m$) discharge($V _f=220V$, $V_s=150V$) and the color purity is improved. Moreover, the luminous efficiency increases up to 60% in comparison with the conventional case.

  • Characteristics of Discharge and nonthermal plasma generation in a micro-air gap spacing between a micro-dielectric barrier and a electrode have been investigated experimentally to chert the potential to be used as a micro-scale nonthermal plasma generator. It is found that the output ozone concentration, as a nonthermal plasma intensity parameter, of the micro-air gnp nonthermal plasma generator depended greatly upon the air gap spacing and thickness of the dielectric barrier. As a result, there is a optimal air gap sparing in the same micro dielectric barrier to generate ozone effectively. And the higher ozone concentration was generated from the thinner micro-barrier.

  • This paper describes the effect of floating metallic object on do flashover characteristics in all gap producing unipolar ion flow field. Needle-to-plane electrodes of 120mm in gap length were used as the main gap electrode and the tested metallic objects were spheres with the radius of 2,10 and 15mm or needles from 5 to 40mm long. The characteristics of flashover voltage vs. location of the floating object are different completely with the shape of the floating metal and polarity of the applied voltage.

  • In order to investigate the electrical properties of X-ray tube oils for insulating and cooling, the breakdown characteristics in temperature range of $20\sim100[^{\circ}C]$, that of AC breakdown in 0.5~2.5[mm] of gap length, we are made researches. The classification for the physical properties of oil for X-ray tube by FTIR and H-NMR experiments was confirmed to type of mineral oils. As for the dependance of breakdown characteristics due to electrode gap length, breakdown voltage was found nearly uniform by impurity effect according to the increase of gap. As a result the characteristics for AC breakdown, the dielectric strength was increased to $90[^{\circ}C]$ but decreased over $90[^{\circ}C]$ in the temperature range.

  • In the bistable chiral splay nematic (BCSN) mode, the splay and ${\pi}$ twist states are used for the two stable states. The switching property is strongly dependent on the amplitude of the electric field. In this paper, we investigated the gray scale capability of BCSN liquid crystal display (LCD) by the gradual horizontal electric field caused the interdigital electrode of by the inequality gap. We demonstrate the gray scale of the BCSN LCD during transition process under the horizontal electric field.

  • We studied the effect of self-erase discharge on the luminous efficacy of ac PDPs. We observed through discharge current analysis to confirm that the selferase discharge occurred mainly between sustain cathode and address electrode, which have an influence on the luminous efficacy. The amount and timing of the self-erase discharge was varied to observe its effect on the luminous efficacy. It has been found that the luminous efficacy could be improved by the self-erase discharge when it is adjusted to occur right before the main discharge in the small gap structure. In the long gap structure, on the contrary, the luminous efficacy could be increased when the self-erase discharge is suppressed. Also, various waveforms to control self-erase discharge are suggested and tested in the panel experiments.

  • This paper deals with the dielectric behaviors of $SF_{6}$ gas and prebreakdown growth caused by lightning impulse voltages in inhomogeneous field perturbed with a fixed needle-shaped protrusion on the electrode. The measuring interpretation of the external current induced by moving charges is described. The temporal growth of prebreakdown is obserbed by using a shunt and photomultiplier. The prebreakdown processes are initiated by the first streamer corona at a needle protrustion, the flashover of the main gap in the positive polarity is very sensitive to the local field and propagates into the gap with the leader mechanism. It is found that the dependence of the prebreakdown phenomena on the polarity of applied voltages is caused by the effect of space charges. In addition, the proposed measuring techniques are very useful to perform the measurements of avalanche currents, corona discharges in inhomogeneous fields ad partial discharges in voids.

  • In this study, breakdown characteristics of a vertical sphere-plane air gap in the presence of combustion flame were examined under the application of a.c. and d.c. high-voltages in order to investigate the effect of flame on the dielectric strength of air. Propane gas is used as the fuel of the flame, and the temperature distribution of air around the flame is measured. The polarity effects for the d.c. voltages and breakdown voltages of air when applied both of a.c. and d.c. voltages were examined in the case of the variation of the gap length and the horizontal distance between the flame and the high-voltage sphere electrode. The influence of relative air density, electrification and shape changes of the flame as factors that affect the breakdown voltages were discussed.

  • We considered the uniformity of fabricated micromirror arrays by characterizing the fabrication process and calculating the appropriate driving voltages of micromirrors used as virtual photomask in maskless photolithography. The uniformity of the micromirror array in terms of driving voltage and optical characteristics is adversely affected by factors, such as the air gap between the bottom electrode and the mirror plate, the spring shape and the deformation of the mirror plate or torsion spring. The thickness deviation of the photoresist sacrificial layer, the misalignment between mirror plate and bottom electrode, the aluminum deposition condition used to produce the spring and the mirror plate, and initial mirror deflection were identified as key factors. Their importance lies in the fact that they are related to air gap deviations under the mirror plate, asymmetric driving voltages in left and right mirror directions, and the deformation of the Al sring or mirror plate after removal of the sacrificial layer. The plasma ashing conditions used for removing the sacrificial layer also contributed to the deformation of the mirror plate and spring. Driving voltages were calculated for the pixel operation of the micromirror array, and the non-uniform characteristics of fabricated micromirrors were taken into consideration to improve driving performance reliability.
