Electrochemical fabrication of nanostructured Au surfaces has received increased attention. In the present work, electrochemical modification of Au surfaces for fabricating nanostructured Au surfaces in the absence of externally added precursors is presented, which is different to the previous methods utilizing electrochemical deposition of externally added precursors. Application of anodic potential at Au surfaces in phosphate buffers containing $Br^-$ resulted in the anodic dissolution of Au, which produced Au precursors at the electrode surfaces. The resulting Au precursors were further reduced at the surface to produce nanostructured Au structures. The effects of applied potential and time on the morphology of Au nanostructures were systematically examined, from which a unique backbone type Au nanostructures was produced. The backbone type Au nanostructures exhibited high surface-enhanced Raman activity. The present work would give insights into the formation of electrochemical fabrication of nanostructured Au surfaces.
In aqueous rechargeable lithium ion batteries, $LiV_3O_8$ exhibits obviously enhanced electrochemical performance after $AlF_3$ surface modification owing to improved surface stability to fragile aqueous electrolyte. The cycle life of $LiV_3O_8$ is significantly enhanced by the presence of an $AlF_3$ coating at an optimal content of 1 wt.%. The results of powder X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements confirm that the electrochemical improvement can be attributed mainly to the presence of $AlF_3$ on the surface of $LiV_3O_8$. Furthermore, the $AlF_3$ coating significantly reduces vanadium ion dissolution and surface failure by stabilizing the surface of the $LiV_3O_8$ in an aqueous electrolyte solution. The results suggest that the $AlF_3$ coating can prevent the formation of unfavorable side reaction components and facilitate lithium ion diffusion, leading to reduced surface resistance and improved surface stability compared to bare $LiV_3O_8$ and affording enhanced electrochemical performance in aqueous electrolyte solutions.
Most medical sensors are disposable products. In order to reduce inspection and diagnosis costs, it is more important to develop the inexpensive electrode materials. We fabricated the CuO NPs/PANI/E-PGE as an electrode material for disposable electrochemical sensors and applied it to a non-enzymatic glucose sensor. For surface activation of PGE, pretreatment was performed using chemical and electrochemical methods, respectively. Electrochemical properties according to the pretreatment method were analyzed through chronoamperometry (CA), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance (EIS). From these analytical results, the electrochemically pretreated PGE (E-PGE) was finally adopted. The non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on CuO NPs/PANI/E-PGE shows sensitivity of 239.18 mA/mM×cm2 (in a linear range of 0.282~2.112 mM) and 36.99 mA/mM×cm2 (3.75423~50 mM), detection limit of 17.6 μM and good selectivity. Based on the results of this study, it was confirmed that the modified PGE is a high-performance electrode material. Therefore, these electrodes can be applied to a variety of disposable sensors.

Surface modification is a technology to form a new surface layer and overcome the intrinsic properties of the base material by applying thermal energy or stress onto the surface of the material. The purpose of this technique is to achieve anti-corrosion, beautiful appearance, wear resistance, insulation and conductance for base materials. Surface modification techniques may include plating, chemical conversion treatment, painting, lining and surface hardening. Among which, a surface modification process using electrolytes has been investigated for a long time in connection with research on its industrial application. The technology is highly favoured by various fields because it provides not only high productivity and cost reduction opportunities, but also application availability for components with complex geometry. In this study, an electrochemical experiment was performed on the surface of 5083-O Al alloy to determine an optimal electrolyte temperature, which produces surface with excellent corrosion resistance under marine environment than the initial surface. The experiment result, the modified surface presented a significantly lower corrosion current density with increasing electrolyte temperature, except for $5^{\circ}C$ of electrolyte temperature at which premature pores was created.

Aluminum alloys have poor corrosion resistance compared to the pure aluminum due to the additive elements. Thus, anodizing technology artificially generating thick oxide films are widely applied nowadays in order to improve corrosion resistance. Anodizing is one of the surface modification techniques, which is commercially applicable to a large surface at a low price. However, most studies up to now have focused on its commercialization with hardly any research on the assessment and improvement of the physical characteristics of the anodized films. Therefore, this study aims to select the optimum temperature of sulfuric electrolyte to perform excellent corrosion resistance in the harsh marine environment through electrochemical experiment in the sea water upon generating porous films by variating the temperatures of sulfuric electrolyte. To fabricate uniform porous film of 5083 aluminum alloy, we conducted electro-polishing under the 25 V at $5^{\circ}C$ condition for three minutes using mixed solution of ethanol (95 %) and perchloric (70 %) acid with volume ratio of 4:1. Afterward, the first step surface modification was performed using sulfuric acid as an electrolyte where the electrolyte concentration was maintained at 10 vol.% by using a jacketed beaker. For anode, 5083 aluminum alloy with thickness of 5 mm and size of $2cm{\times}2cm$ was used, while platinum electrode was used for cathode. The distance between the two was maintained at 3 cm. Afterward, the irregular oxide film that was created in the first step surface modification was removed. For the second step surface modification process (identical to the step 1), etching was performed using mixture of chromic acid (1.8 wt.%) and phosphoric acid (6 wt.%) at $60^{\circ}C$ temperature for 30 minutes. Anodic polarization test was performed at scan rate of 2 mV/s up to +3.0 V vs open circuit potential in natural seawater. Surface morphology was compared using 3D analysis microscope to observe the damage behavior. As a result, the case of surface modification presented a significantly lower corrosion current density than that without modification, indicating excellent corrosion resistance.
We have developed an electrochemical immunosensor that combines the electrocatalytic property of carbon nanotube and the low background current of indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. A partial monolayer of carboxylated single-walled carbon nanotube (CCNT) is covalently formed on an ITO electrode modified with amine-terminated phosphonic acid. Nonspecifically adsorbed avidin on the hydrophobic sidewalls of CCNT is used to immobilize biotinylated antibody and to reduce the nonspecific binding to CCNT. The biotinylated antimouse IgG bound on avidin and the antimouse IgG conjugated with alkaline phosphatase (ALP) sandwiches a target mouse IgG. ALP catalyzes the conversion of p-aminophenyl phosphate monohydrate into p-aminophenol, which is electrocatalytically oxidized to p-quinone imine on CCNT surface. Moderate electrocatalytic electrode obtained with the combination of CCNT and ITO allows low detection limit (0.1 ng/ mL).

The electrochemical machining of carbon steel was carried in various electrolytes which contain NACl and $NaCIO_3$. Though electrolyte containg NaCl yields fast machining rate, dimensional control is rather difficult. In the case of electrolyte with $NaCIO_3$, dimensional control of anode shape can be obtained through modification of cathode design. Mathematical modeling is also performed for these systems and agreements are good compared with experimental date. The constant gap experiment butween two electrode yielded faster machining rate than constant cathode moving rate experiment.
A new synthesis method for the preparation of Pt electrocatalysts on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) is reported. In this method, Pt electrocatalysts are loaded onto 2-naphthalenethiol (NT) functionalized CNFs. The noncovalent functionalization of CNFs by NT is the effective way for better distribution of Pt particles and higher electrocatalytic activity in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. It was found that the presence of NT acts as a poison to catalysts. Therefore, it is necessary to remove NT through the heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$.

$LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ material was surface modified with Zr-phosphate. Scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy and electrochemical studies indicate that surface modification improve the rate capability. Electrochemical studies were performed by assembling 2032 coin cells with lithium metal as an anode.
The surface modified $LiMn_2O_4$ materials with Li-Fe composites were prepared by a sol-gel method to improve the electrochemical performance of $LiMn_2O_4$ and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)-EDS. XRD results indicate that all the samples (modified and pristine samples) have cubic spinel structures, and XRD, XPS, and TEM-EDS data reveal the formation of $Li(Li_xFe_xMn_{2-2x})O_4$ solid solution on the surface of particles. For the electrochemical properties, the modified material demonstrated dramatically enhanced reversibility and stability even at elevated temperature. These improvements are attributed to the formation of the solid solution, and thus-formed solid solution phase on the surface of $LiMn_2O_4$ particle reduces the dissolution of Mn ion and suppresses the Jahn-Teller effect.
