  • Fabrication and electro-optic applications of glass optical fibers were reviewed. Theoretical description on the electro-optic Kerr effect in glass optical fibers, particularly for the second-order optical nonlinearity was given. Fabrication procedure and the characterization of the nonlinear electro-optic fibers with internal electrodes were described. Several electro-optic devices based on the polarimetric cells made by the nonlinear optical fibers with internal electrodes were also discussed with the experimental results on the electro-optic effect.

  • Development-concerned parties, business managers and test evaluators have experienced conflicts among themselves due to the absence of standardized criteria for military electro-optical(EO) and infrared(IR) devices in test evaluation planning and evaluation phases. Therefore, establishment of objectified test and evaluation criteria for EO/IR devices is required. This paper applies South Korea's weather measurement average of minimum 15 km for visibility range, 3 bar from Johnson criteria for EO device and 4 bar from NATO's STANAG-4347 for IR device for target type, and 50 % probability for evaluation criteria, respectively. Based upon these criteria, this paper will establish suitable criteria that are improved for development weapon system in consideration of required capability of demanding forces and field environment.

  • Recently, researches for high-speed optical devices have been increased to provide mass data transmission and high-speed optical communication. Optical modulator in the transmission link is one of the crucial devices in total optical network system and it can affect a great effect to the whole transmission properties. In this paper, traveling wave electro-absorption modulator (TWEAM) is examined to ensure high efficiency in the RF range and wide bandwidth. In addition, the temperature-dependence electrical characteristics of TWEAM is investigated. Temperature dependent property variations were characterized using I-V and C-V measurement.

  • A simulation method has been purposed in this paper to optimize the stack structure of metal/ITO cathode for full transparent or top emission devices. The result demonstrates that the complexity of the two proper layers thicknesses design is reduced. Finally, the experiment data also strain the simulation result.

  • In this paper, the thermally evaporated molybdenum oxide $(MoO_x)$ is investigated as the effective hole-injection material for organic lightemitting devices (OLEDs). The use of $MoO_x$ significantly lowers the operating voltage of OLEDs, insensitive to the anode materials used.

  • Polymers are emerging as new alternative materials for optical communication devices. We developed two types of polymer-based devices for optical communications. One type is for ultra high-speed signal processing that uses nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers in such devices as electro-optic (EO) Mach-Z${\ddot{e}} $ hnder (MZ) modulators and EO 2${\times}$2 switches. The other is for WDM optical communications that use low-loss optical polymers in such devices as 1${\times}$2, 2${\times}$2, 4-arrayed 2${\times}$2 digital optical switches (DOSs) and 16${\times}$16 arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) routers. For these devices, we synthesized a polyetherimide-disperse red 1 (PEI-DR1) side chain NLO polymer and a low-loss optical polymer known as fluorinated polyaryleneethers (FPAE). This paper presents the details of our development of these polymeric photonic devices considering all aspects from materials to packaging.

  • To improve the switching time of active optical bistable devices, we propose an active optical bistable device that consists of a diode laser, a transistor, and a photodetector. By implementing the proposed device we realize the optical bistable device with a 5 nanosecond switching time. This is the fastest switching time among the hybrid type optical bistable devices. It is also experimentally demonstrated that the proposed device may be used in an optical disc pick up.

  • Liquid crystals are important materials because of their applications in display technology and many other scientific applications. Different mixtures of liquid crystals and their doped samples have gained interest because a single liquid crystal compound cannot fulfill all the required parameters for the display application. The doping can be accomplished with dyes, polymers, or composite nanoparticles among other substance. The addition of nanoparticles can modify the physical properties of the host liquid crystal and enhances the performance of electro-optical devices. The present study is focused on investigations of possible changes in dielectric and electro optical properties of liquid crystals caused by doping with ceramic nanoparticles. Including smaller nanoparticles were found to be better candidates for use in suppressing the unwanted ion effects in liquid crystal displays.
