We investigated a LiNbO$_3$ based integrated-optic polarization controller with the Ti-indiffused waveguide along the z-axis utilizing the electro-optic effect. The device consists of a first quarter-wave (λ / 4) followed by a half-wave (λ / 2) and a second quarter-wave (λ / 4) wave-plate. We analyzed the amount of phase change and the transformation of the polarized mode as a function of the combination of wave-plates and of their applied voltages. The operation has been systematically measured utilizing a polarimeter and Poincare sphere. We confirmed that the fabricated device controls the transformations from any arbitrary input state of polarization (SOP) into any general output SOP.
An electro-optic polymer digital optical switch was fabricated by using a photobleached waveguide and a self-aligned electrode. It features wavelength insensitive operation, fabrication tolerance and flexible design. And its possible advantages include low coupling losses to the fibers and wide bandwidths. For improving its switching performance, the guided mode profiles of the photobleached waveguides were controlled by photobleaching times to achieve optimized coupling in the branch. And the self-aligned electrode was employed to achieve both efficient overlap of the optical and electric fields and easy introduction of the adiabatically tapered electrodes. The measured crosstalks were better than -21dB at 1.32 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and the extinction ratios of each output port were also more than 20 dB.
A soft recovery system (SRS) is a device that stops a high speed projectile without damaging the projectile. The SRS is necessary to verify the shock resistant requirements of microelectronics and electro-optic sensors in smart munitions, where the projectiles experience over 20,000 g acceleration inside the barrel. In this study, a computer code for the performance evaluation of a SRS based on ballistic compression decelerator concept has been developed. It consists of a time accurate compressible one-dimensional Euler code with use of deforming grid and a projectile motion analysis code. The Euler code employs Roe's approximate Riemann solver with a total variation diminishing (TVD) method. A fully implicit dual time stepping method is used to advance the solution in time. In addition, the geometric conservation law (GCL) is applied to predict the solutions accurately on the deforming mesh. The equation of motion for the projectile is solved with the four-stage Runge-Kutta time integration method. A small scale SRS to catch a 20 mm bullet fired at 500 m/s within 1,600 g-limit has been designed with the proposed method.
An electro-optic polymer digital optical switch with a coupling region modified for optimum coupling is designed and demonstrated. Its branch waveguide is fabricated by reactive ion etching. Then, the modified coupling region is adiabatically introduced along the propagation direction from the branching point of the two waveguides, and it is implemented by photobleaching after the device fabrication. The structure of the modified coupling region and its refractive index profiles are designed to optimize and mode coupling in the Y-branch waveguide. Therefore, the switching performance of the device was shown to be enhanced with a fixed device length. The measured drive voltage is reduced by more than 30 percents, and the crosstalk is also improved by about 4~6 dB.

Foreign object debris (FOD) is a generic term for various metals and non-metal foreign object and materials with potential hazards to aircraft operations. Since the method of manual FOD detection and collection in the aircraft moving area is very low in efficiency and economic efficiency, it is essential to develop to FOD automatic detection system suitable for domestic environment. This paper is the result of the performance comparison test results of the two systems for the combined operation of each optimal detection time and 95% accuracy above 100 m for complex operation using the fixed FOD automatic detection system and the mobile FOD system using EO/IR camera and radar at Taean Airfield Hanseo University. It is expected that FOD can be performed unattended through continuous R & D.
The MSC is a remote sensing instrument with very high performance that is to be installed on KOMPSAT2 satellite. The MSC consists of EOS (Electro-Optic Subsystem), PMU (Payload Management Unit) and PDTS (Payload Data Transmission Subsystem). PMU controls and monitors all the other payload units by sending commands and collecting telemetry. PMU is in charge of interfacing between payload system and satellite bus system. PMU gets commands from ground-station via OBC (On-Board Computer) that is a main controller of the satellite bus system and sends telemetry to the ground-station via OBC. There is a processor module, called SBC (Single Board Computer) in the PMU. The SBC is a main controller of the MSC system. The main roles of the SBC are payload mission management, command validation and execution, telemetry collection and monitoring, ancillary data handling, event reporting, power control of payload sub-units and communication with these units. Intel's 80486DX2 processor has been used for the SBC. Due to the fact that the SBC plays important roles for imaging mission execution and handles a lot of control data that is required for payload operation, it is required to make analysis of the CPU load when it is in maximum operation mode. In this paper, the analysis and measurement results of the SBC throughput in the maximum operation mode.
We designed and fabricated a $2{\times}4$ symmetric self electro-optic effect device array using GaAs/ AIo.04 G$\DeltaR$), and optical bistability loop width ($\Delta$). The average values of the elements of the $2{\times}4$ S-SEED array were CR~13.1, R~24%, and $\Delta$~91%. It was found that the AFP cavity structure enhances the self-biased optical bistability in ESQW-SEED under no external bias. That is due to the decreased intrisic region thickness in AFP-SEED structures, and which increases the built-in electric fields. The zero-biased S-SEED showed CR of ~4.7, R~9%, and $\Delta$~22%.X>~22%.

Image registration is a process to establish the spatial correspondence between the images of same scene, which are acquired at different view points, at different times, or by different sensors. In this paper, we propose an effective registration method for images acquired by multi-sensors, such as EO (electro-optic) and IR (infrared) sensors. Image registration is achieved by extracting features and finding the correspondence between features in each input images. In the recent research, the multi-sensor image registration method that finds corresponding features by exploiting NMI (Normalized Mutual Information) was proposed. Conventional NMI-based image registration methods assume that the statistical correlation between two images should be global, however images from EO and IR sensors often cannot satisfy this assumption. Therefore the registration performance of conventional method may not be sufficient for some practical applications because of the low accuracy of corresponding feature points. The proposed method improves the accuracy of corresponding feature points by combining the gradient orientation as spatial information along with NMI attributes and provides more accurate and robust registration performance. Representative experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, we proposed a node architecture and cell routing strategies for ATM applications in WDM multihop networks. The proposed node architecture employs the optical delay loop for storing the cell which is failed in out-link contention. This optical delay loop allows the delay of one cell without the electro-optic conversion. Therefore, we can get the advantages of S&F(Store-and-Forward) routing in Deflection-based all-optical networks. To support the ATM applications efficiently. we considered the transmission priority of ATM cell so that high priority cell can be transmitted with lower loss and shorter delay than low priority one. Two kinds of routing strategies are designed for this architecture: Scheme-Ⅰand Scheme-Ⅱ. Scheme-Ⅰapplies S&F routing to high cell and Deflection routing to low cell, i.e., high cells are routed along the shortest path based on S&F routing, but low cells are deflected or lost. Schem-Ⅱ is similar to Scheme-Ⅰexcept that low cells can occupy the optical loop if it is available. This Scheme-Ⅱ increases the utilization of network resources without decreasing the throughput of high cell by reducing the low cell loss rate when traffic load is low. Simulation results show that our routing strategies have better performance than conventional ones under non-uniform traffic as well as uniform traffic.

Image registration is a process to establish the spatial correspondence between images of the same scene, which are acquired at different view points, at different times, or by different sensors. This paper presents a new algorithm for robust registration of the images acquired by multiple sensors having different modalities; the EO (electro-optic) and IR(infrared) ones in the paper. The two feature-based and intensity-based approaches are usually possible for image registration. In the former selection of accurate common features is crucial for high performance, but features in the EO image are often not the same as those in the R image. Hence, this approach is inadequate to register the E0/IR images. In the latter normalized mutual Information (nHr) has been widely used as a similarity measure due to its high accuracy and robustness, and NMI-based image registration methods assume that statistical correlation between two images should be global. Unfortunately, since we find out that EO and IR images don't often satisfy this assumption, registration accuracy is not high enough to apply to some applications. In this paper, we propose a two-stage NMI-based registration method based on the analysis of statistical correlation between E0/1R images. In the first stage, for robust registration, we propose two preprocessing schemes: extraction of statistically correlated regions (ESCR) and enhancement of statistical correlation by filtering (ESCF). For each image, ESCR automatically extracts the regions that are highly correlated to the corresponding regions in the other image. And ESCF adaptively filters out each image to enhance statistical correlation between them. In the second stage, two output images are registered by using NMI-based algorithm. The proposed method provides prospective results for various E0/1R sensor image pairs in terms of accuracy, robustness, and speed.
