  • In this paper, a reference model following control system using a fuzzy logic controller(FLC) is proposed By using an integrator and a nonlinear hysteresis element, a reference model whose response has no overshoot and fast rise time is designed. A FLC is designed to follow as close as possible to the response of the reference model. The proposed design method is shown that the robustness and the optimal tracking property can be achieved under modeling error, disturbance and parameter perturbations. The effectiveness of the proposed design method is verified through the simulation that compare using the FLC with using a $H_{\infty}$ controller.

  • We report a nickel optical MEMS switch, being able to rotate through a large angle and to accommodate multiple channels. The proposed optical switch consists of a thin nickel mirror and two torsion springs supporting the mirror. The torsion springs are designed using a finite element method (FEM) such that plastic deformation of the thin nickel is avoided during the large torsion actuation. For switching speed improvement, transient vibration of the released mirror is suppressed by optimizing the mirror design and a fast switching response of $200\;{\mu}s\;(pull-down)/300\;{\mu}s\;(pull-up)$ is demonstrated.

  • The transfer function of an acoustic system, in general, often exhibits a wide dynamic range and a very long impulse response. The time-stretched pulse (TSP) proposed by Aoshima (ATSP) has a small peak-factor and is accordingly suitable for the measuring impulse responses. The pulse is not so suitable, however, for the measurement of impulse responses over a wide frequency range. In this paper, we try to generalize and optimize this method (OATSP). This makes the method applicable for measuring of impulse responses longer than the length of the TSP. An analysis of error in such a case is also shown. Finally, we discuss how to implement this technique in specific measurement conditins.

  • In the power-line communication(PLC) systems, the power line is a wired medium. However, the power line channel has the multi-path fading characteristics like the wireless channel in the wireless communication systems because it has the signal reflection and divergence by the impedance mismatching between many branch lines and loads. So the analysis of the multi-path characteristics is very important, and it has been doing by the several measurement methods for the impulse response between the transmitter and the receiver. PN sequence method has originally been used as a wideband impulse response measurement mettled for wireless channel, but it is recently being applied to not only the wireless channel but also the wired channel like the power line channel. This method is more useful and effective for the long distance communication channel like the medium voltage power distribution line with the multi-paths[1]. In this thesis, we have measured impulse response for the medium voltage power distribution line channel by the wideband measurement method using PN sequence, analytically studied the measured data and presented the results.

  • This paper presents comparison results of Step Response Model of Dynamic Matrix Control(DMC) for a drum-type boiler-turbine system of a fossil power plant. Two possible kinds of step response models are investigated in designing the DMC, one is developed with the linearization of theoretical model and the other is developed with the process step-test data. Then, the control performances of each model-based DMC are simulated and evaluated. It is observed that the simulation results with the step-response model based on the test data show satisfactory results, while the linearized model is not suitable for the control of boiler-turbine system.

  • A system called demand response programs (DRP) is being introduced among various countries owing to the lack of new generation capacity and the higher fuel generation cost. It is a program which provides for the end-users to select their consumption of electricity by recognizing the value of their consumption in real time. That is, Demand Response can be defined as the changes in electric usage by end-use customers from their normal consumption patterns in response to changes in the price of electricity or other signals. It is expected that the effects of DRP are preventing price spike, improving supply reliability and social welfare and increasing option of customers. Considering the customer's thermal comfort zone, this paper determines the most profitable combination of optimal incentives and amounts of load reduction for a retailer to maximize profits according to predicted outdoor temperatures while implementing DRP.

  • This study deals with the dynamic response of a rotor in Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) caused by the unbalance force such as the unbalanced mass and electromagnetic force. The method to analyze the mechanical response of the rotor supported on the bearing is based on an extension of the 3-dimensional Transfer Matrix Method(TMM) coupled with the electromagnetic force calculated by Maxwell stress tensor. The displacement of the rotor as a function of frequency according to the position of the unbalanced mass is evaluated from the frequency response function (FRF). The rotor behaviour with the electromagnetic force is compared with that without the electromagnetic force. In addition, the resonance speeds and the vibration modes are analyzed and demonstrated in this paper. These results are useful in designing the mechanical rotor and in balancing properly the rotor to reduce vibration and noise.

  • It is known that HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection, which causes AIDS after some latent period, is a dynamic process that can be modeled mathematically. Effects of available anti-viral drugs, which prevent HIV from infecting healthy cells, can also be included in the model. In this paper we illustrate control theory can be applied to a model of HIV infection. In particular, the drug dose is regarded as control input and the goal is to excite an immune response so that the symptom of infected patient should not be developed into AIDS. Finite horizon optimal control is employed to obtain the optimal schedule of drug dose since the model is highly nonlinear and we want maximum performance for enhancing the immune response. From the simulation studies, we find that gradual reduction of drug dose is important for the optimality. We also demonstrate the obtained open-loop optimal control is vulnerable to parameter variation of the model and measurement noise. To overcome this difficulty, we finally present nonlinear receding horizon control to incorporate feedback in the drug treatment.

  • The wearable sensor glove was developed using EDA sensors and conducting fabric. EDA(Electro-dermal Activity) signal is an electric response of human skin. There are SIL(Skin Impedance Level) and SIR(Skin Impedance Response) in EDA. SIL consists mostly of a DC component while SIR consists of an AC component. The relationship between drowsiness and the EDA signal is utilized. EDA sensors were made using a conducting fabric instead of AgCl electrodes, for a more suitable, more wearable device. The EDA signal acquisition module was made by connecting the EDA sensor gloves through conductive fabric lines. Also, the EDA signal acquisition module can be connected to a PC that shows the results of the EDA signal processing analysis and gives proper feedback to the user. This system can be used in various applications to detect drowsiness and prevent accidents from drowsiness for automobile drivers.

  • This study presents the experiment and simulation results on the magnetic field response and electrical stability behaviors of no-insulation (NI) and metal insulation with stainless steel tape (MI-SS) which wound in form of racetrack type coils. First of all, the structural design of the racetrack type bobbin was shown along with its parameters. Then, the current-voltage tests were carried out to measure the critical current of both test coils. Also, the sudden discharging and charging tests were performed in the steady state to estimate the decay field time and magnetic field response, respectively. Finally, the overcurrent tests were conducted in the transient state to investigate the electrical stability of these test coils. Based on the experimental results, the contact surface resistances were calculated and applied to the field coils (FCs) of 10-MW-class second generation high temperature superconducting generator (2G HTSG) used in wind offshore environment. The charging delay time and electrical stability for NI and MI-SS HTS FCs of 10-MW-class 2G HTSG are analyzed by the equivalent circuit model and the key parameters which were obtained from the electromagnetic finite element analysis results.
