  • In recent years, it has been a worldwide trend that many power utilities gave their attention to develop and operate their power plants, substation and distribution systems. Following this trend, KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation) has developed many electric automation systems with various communication networks. It has been natural that the automation systems are just focused on to remote devices when they come to be designed. But, we have to shift the focus to the automation system itself. We have developed the Multi-service Optical Transmission System (M-OTS) for electrical power systems. It can be adopt to not only distribution power field but also the transmission power field. The result strongly shows that the system is potentially beneficial in reliability, speed, and expandability. This paper presents some of initial design efforts and results toward a KEPCO's communication system in distribution areas.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceived distance from home to high-voltage power lines using a transmission and substation geographic information system(TGIS). Of the 725, 136 respondents reported that high voltage power transmission tower, power lines or substation was within visual field range from home. Among them, 114 respondents reported valid address, which could be used in the analysis of TGIS. Forty two respondents(36.8 %) estimated that the power lines were closer and 15 respondents(13.2 %) estimated that they were farther than they actually were. Our current findings suggest that the reported distance from home to high-voltage power transmission towers, power lines, and substations cannot be used as a proxy for exposure to electromagnetic fields due to the low validity.

  • For the design of DC traction power supply system at new Light Rail Transit(LRT) construction, it is very important to determine system configuration, location and power capacity of substation. However, a LRT system consists of a number of subsystems such as train movement, power supply and traction drives, which inevitably contains many complexities and diversities. The objective of this paper is to clarify and systematize the design procedure and its assessment for the electrification system of a LRT line. This paper discusses in detail our approach to system design and its assessment. The whole DC-feeding network configuration, characteristics of a train, and design method of substation arrangements is thoroughly investigated for the design. As a result of the investigations, the design procedure is clarified and systematized and a computer program for the design and evaluation of the system is developed using the most suitable iterative method with nodal equation. To verify the proposed design and its assessment procedure, case studies for the DC traction power supply system of a planed Korean LRT line are performed.

  • In power system, substation facilities have become too complex and larger according to an extended power system. Also, customers require the high quality of electrical power system. However, some facilities become old and often break down unexpectedly. The unexpected failure may cause a break in power system and loss of profits. Therefore it is important to prevent abrupt faults by monitoring the condition of power systems. Among the various power facilities, power transformers play an important role in the transmission and distribution systems. In this research, we develop intelligent diagnosis technique for predicting faults of power transformer by FCM(Fuzzy c-means) and Euclidean based distance measure. The proposed technique make it possible to measures the possibility and degree of aging as well as the faults occurred in transformer. To demonstrate the validity of proposed method, various experiments are performed and their results are presented.

  • In an electric substation, there are many sources of surge such as switching operations or lightning strokes. A grounding system submitted to such surge current presents very different behaviour from the observed under low frequency current. Especially, it has been reported that significant overvoltage occurs at the current feed-in point, and this may cause damages to other grounded components in the substation area. This paper describes the basic mechanism of improvement of grouding performance in transient state with auxiliary grounding grids.

  • The circuit breakers had been withdrawn from 345 kV SIC substation. because these were made following the old IEC requirement(IEC 56; TRV rating) and insufficient current rating(2,000 A) for the system requirement(4,000 A). And, they are going to be reused at 345 kV UR substation and SJS switching section. This paper deals with the TRV(temporary recovery voltage) analysis results in order to reuse them. The analysis results are satisfied with the IEC requirements of RRRV(Rate of Rise of Recovery Voltage) and peak voltage($U_c$) from 2000 to 2010.

  • This paper presents optimal charge arrangement through potential error analysis. In order to decide the number of charges per conductor for a large system, adaptive simulation charge arrangement technique has been proposed. "Grouping" technique which means to divide analysis domain into two groups has been described through field error analysis. By this method, the size of matrix to calculate E field at a calculation point is reduced remarkably. The proposed method is applied to the electric field calculation around the Substation busbars.
