Analysis on Solid Insulator Flashover Characteristics on Moisture Contamination for Electrical Insulation Improvement of ESS (ESS 안전성 개선을 위한 결로 운전 조건 고려 고체절연물 연면 절연파괴특성 분석)

  • As the large-scale renewable energy power plant increases, the high-capacity and compact Energy Storage System (ESS) is required. However, this trend could reduce the insulation reliability of ESS. In this study, the surface flashover characteristics for four types of solid insulators are investigated in the uniform electric field with AC and Lightning Impulse (LI) voltage waveforms under various contamination levels. In addtion, insulator surfaces are compared based on the contact angle before and after surface flashover. The experimental results show that AC flashover voltage is dependent on the materials and the contamination level, but LI flashover voltage is only associated with the contamination level. Especially, AC flashover voltage of PC (PolyCarbonate) is higher than that of other insulators, which is associated with the unique and sequential creepage discharge propagation pattern of PC. The localized discharges on the surface of PC form corresponding tracking points. Then, the interconnected trackings result in the complete flashover. This flashover patterns degrade the surface of PC much more than that of epoxy and Bulk Molding Compoud (BMC). Thus, the contact angle of PC is significantly reduced compared to that of other insulators. The increased hydrophilicity in the surface of PC enhances the insulator surface conductivity.

  • With the improvement of industrial society, high quality electrical energy, simplification of operation and maintenance, and ensuring reliability are being required. Also we request an urgent change from $SF_6$ gas to an environment-friendly gas insulation material. In this paper, the experiments of breakdown characteristics by pressure and gap change of $N_2/O_2$ mixture gas through a GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) model were described. This paper reviews basic data of the surface discharge characteristics for Teflon resin in not only pure $N_2$, $N_2:O_2$ mixture gas as being focused on environmentally-friendly insulating gas, but also $SF_6$. Also, insulation characteristics by breakdown voltage and surface discharge voltage of $N_2:O_2$ mixture gas in the experimental chamber were studied.

  • In this study, MOSFETs fabricated on Si-doped, MBE-grown β-Ga2O3 are demonstrated. A Si-doped Ga2O3 epitaxial layer was grown on a Fe-doped, semi-insulating 1.5 cm × 1 cm Ga2O3 substrate using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The fabricated devices are circular type MOSFETs with a gate length of 3 ㎛, a source-drain spacing of 20 ㎛, and a gate width of 523 ㎛. The device exhibited a good pinch-off characteristic, a high on-off drain current ratio of approximately 2.7×109, and a high breakdown voltage of 1,080 V, which demonstrates the potential of Ga2O3 for power device applications including electric vehicles, railways, and renewable energy.

  • The objective of this paper is to study the discharge phenomenon for a point-plane air interval using an original fuzzy logic system. Firstly, a physical model based on streamer theory with consideration of the space charge fields due to electrons and positive ions is proposed. To test this model we have calculated the breakdown threshold voltage for a point-plane air interval. The same model is used to determine the discharge steps for different configurations as an inference data base. Secondly, using results obtained by the numerical simulation of the previous model, we have introduced the fuzzy logic technique to predict the breakdown threshold voltage of the same configurations used in the numerical model and make estimation on the insulating state of the air interval. From the comparison of obtained results, we can conclude that they are in accordance with the experimental ones obtained for breakdown discharges in different point-plane air gaps collected from the literature. The proposed study using fuzzy logic technique shows a good performance in the analysis of different discharge steps of the air interval.

The Effect of Antioxidant in the Electrical Properties of Homemade Insulating Oil (국산절연유의 전기적 특성에 미치는 산화방지제의 효과)

  • The main purporse of this paper is to study on the influence of temperature effect on electrical-properties, i.e., dielectric breakdown voltage, dielectric constant and resitivity of homemade insulating oil containing antioxidant. Transformer oil manufactured in Korea is taken for a sample, and this sample is classified into seven samples in which antioxidant is contained and not contained, and antioxidant is divided into three kinds of amount: 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.8%. Changing the tempe5rature of the samples by oil bath, the electric properties measured from the samples are as follows: (1) the variation of either the dielectric breakdown voltage or the resistivity are considerably large, but the dielectric constants are almost unchanging. (2) In view of electrical characteristic, the deterioration rate of the samples containing antioxidant is somewhat lower than that of other samples. (3) Nearly the same value is shown in the dielectric-breakdown voltage of the samples, in which contained the different amount of antioxidant: 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.8%, but the decrease rate of resitivity is lowest, 0.3%, of all. As the result of the experiment, This study can suggest that 0.3% be the optimum amount of antioxidant which will be added transformer oil manufactured in Korea and is useful for the understanding about the electrical properties of transformer oil containing antioxidant.

  • When electronegative gas SF$_{6}$ is dissolved and charged with insulating oil, the effect caused in the process by electronegative characteristic is studied and also the pressure effect caused by electronegative SF$_{6}$ acting on the liquid-level is examined respectively. When inert gas Ar is used to find a pressure effect acting on the liquid-level, its effect on dielectric strength is considered in the experiment. With three kinds of impulse voltage different in the duration of wave front and wave tail, a brief experiment if carried out ot see the effects on the dielectric breakdown characteristic as the wave is changing; either if I$_{2}$ and SF$_{6}$ are added to the insulating oil, or if the oil pressure is increased by Ar the dielectric strength becomes great and the longer the duration of wave front is, the greater the increase of the breakdown voltage, because I$_{2}$ added by a small quantity brings about some hirderance in the formation of gas phase. Likewise, the greater the changed pressure is, the greater the incerase of the breakdown voltage. When SF$_{6}$ is charged, the electronegative characteristic is prevailing at the time of low balanced pressure, and the pressure effect at the time of high balanced pressure.ressure.

  • This paper is an experimental test for the close examination of breakdown causes of glass insulators using at the electric rail-road. The glass insulator is estimated the mechanical performance according to hitting test(ST-100, Sharp-Eng, KOR) that is based on KSC 3810. Insulators is damaged by pendulum weight at the steps of hitting angles. Glass and porcelain insulators are broken at the hitting angle of $72^{\circ}$. From the these results, glass insulator absorbed the impact from the pendulum weight but on the porcelain insulator, it is not transmitted vibration by impact. Hereafter, these results are expected that is used the data for the assessment on breakdown cause of a glass insulator.

  • The characteristics of Electrical breakdown liquid nitrogen($LN_2$) were studied under simulated Quenching conditions for application of HTS apparatus. The experimental results for various quench condition revealed that the breakdown voltage of $LN_2$ with bubble flow velocity and gap spacing, Also, it did a electric field and potential distribution interpreting at the liquid nitrogen when the bubble existed, The plots of equipotential lines for three cases are also shown.

  • This study was conducted to discover a substitute of $SF_6$ gas. $SF_6$ gas is widely used across the industries. Thanks to superior electrical properties, in particular, it has been commonly used in electrical industry. However, there have been a lot of studies on its serious effect on global warming. As a substitute of this synthetic gas, a mixture of dry air and $N_2/O_2$ was chosen in this study. In case of $N_2/O_2$, dielectric strength differs depending on the mixing ratio. This study examined dielectric breakdown and flashover after adjusting oxygen percentage in the dry air. This test was conducted in a quasi-uniform electric field depending on pressure, oxygen concentration and gas mixtures. The test results found that dielectric voltage and flashover voltage were the highest at a certain oxygen concentration. It is the results of this photoionization and electron attachment of oxygen.

Dependence of the Partial Discharge Characteristics of Ultra-high Voltage Cable Insulators on the Measuring Temperature

  • Cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulators are used as insulation in ultra-high voltage electric power cables. This study investigated the electrical properties of XLPE at different temperatures. The electrical properties of the changing tree phenomenon was examined as a function of temperature applied to the electrical conductors by measuring the partial discharge at $25^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$ and applied voltages to the electrodes ranging from 1 kV to 40 kV. The activity of the partial discharge was examined at various temperatures using the K-means distribution. The results revealed the specimen at $80^{\circ}C$ to have the lowest inception voltage and breakdown voltage. In addition, the core of clusters was moved $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ at the positive region and $180^{\circ}$ and $360^{\circ}$ in the negative region in the K-means. The distribution of clusters was concentrated on the inception condition and spread out widely at the breakdown voltage.
