The primary goal of this study is to analyze fire hazards of electric home appliances such as electric iron and electric heater using fault tree analysis(FTA). A fault tree(FT) is constructed and used to analyze fire hazards in electric home appliances. The fault tree is built from events that may occur in electric home appliances. The failure rate of basic events are derived from the value of experimental results and reference. And an algorithm analyzing fire in electric home appliances is suggested. We show how fault tree analysis, carried out by means of failure rate, is able to diagnose fire hazards of electric home appliances in a precise manner. We present numerical results such as fire probability of electric home appliances, importance measure, fire cause, etc. It can be helpful in preventing the fire hazards in electric home appliances.
In this paper, the magnetic fields measured experimentally from the electric home appliances were evaluated and the data were discussed on the bases of the international institutes recommendations. It is difficult to insulate magnetic flux completely from electric home appliances and impossible to simulate theoretically because of the different directions and magnitudes of magnetic fields according to the internal current of electric home appliances. The experimental measurements of magnetic flux density were carried out according to the increment of distance in the vicinity of electric home appliances. The magnetic flux density produced by the electric home appliances was drastically dropped with the increment of distance. The measured and analysed results of electric home appliances of 15 including computer monitor, TV, etc. were presented.

Due to the variety of household electric devices and different power consumption habits of consumers at present, general home energy management (HEM) systems suffer from the lack of dynamic identification of various household appliances and a unidirectional information display. This study presented a set of intelligent interconnection network systems for electric appliances, which can measure the power consumption of household appliances through a current sensing device based on OSGi platform. The system establishes the characteristics and categories of related electric appliances, and searches the corresponding cluster data and eliminates noise for recognition functionality and error detection mechanism of electric appliances by applying the clustering algorithm. The system also integrates household appliance control network services so as to control them according to users' power consumption plans or through mobile devices, thus realizing a bidirectional monitoring service. When the system detects an abnormal operating state, it can automatically shut off electric appliances to avoid accidents. In practical tests, the system reached a recognition rate of 95%, and could successfully control general household appliances through the ZigBee network.
The purposes of the study were: 1) to classify and describe causes of producing wasted furniture and household electric appliances by consumers, 2) to identify the influence of variables on causes of producing wasted furniture and household electric appliances and experience of consumer's recycling behaviors, and 3) to introduce the ways of activating recycling in wasted furniture and household electric appliances which suggested by consumers. 1,132 housewives living in Seoul, Sungnam, and Choongjoo were used as a final sample of the analysis. Data were collected using a self-administered survey. The result of the study indicated the major variable which affects producing wasted furniture and household electric appliances was the perception of recycling. Also, the level of consumers' recycling behavior in furniture and household electric appliances was very low and age and housing type were the major variables which affect consumers' recycling behavior. Finally, the implications and recommendations for consumers, enterprises, and society were suggested.

This paper deals with the effective protection method for the household electric appliances against lightning surges invading from the Power lines. Direct or induced lightning is the main cause of the breakdown of household electric appliance. The most effective protection method is to install SPDs(surge protective devices) at household electric appliances. If SPDs were not installed at most household electric appliances, it is necessary to install SPDs on the mains. Therefore the propagation aspect and protection methods of lighting surges coming into household electric appliances through the mains was experimentally investigated. The in actual-sized test circuits results of protection method for 8 household electric appliances including computer monitors and TV set could be summarized as follows: The breakdown characteristics of household electric appliances from lightning surges were significantly changed with the their input impedance. Namely, the types of input impedance are classified into infinite, resistive or inductive impedances. Especially, the monitor for computer with inductive input impedance from lightning surges was relatively weak against lightning surges. It was confirmed that the self inductance of branch circuits on the mains have protection effect for household electric appliances against lightning surges invading from the power lines. Also the varistors installed at cabinet panel or circuit-breaker were more effective than multi-tap outlet with varistors. When installed varistors in cabinet panel and multi-tap outlet together, the surge protection effect is much more excellent in technical and economical aspects.

With biological effects by ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) magnetic field generated from power system, the transient magnetic field from electric appliances is a major issue presently. Because the transient magnetic field induces higher current than the power frequency field inside living bodies, transient magnetic field exposure has been much focused. In this paper, it is shown that transient magnetic field from electric home appliances can be characterized as magnetic dipole moment. In this method, the dipole moment vector is assumed by allowing an uncertainty of 6dB in the estimated field. A parameter M that represents biological interaction was applied also. The proposed method was applied to 7 types of appliances (hair drier, heater, VDT, etc.) and their equivalent magnetic dipole moment and harmonic components were estimated. As the results, the useful data for quantifying magnetic field distribution around electric appliances were obtained.

With biological effects by ELF(Extremely Low Frequency) magnetic field generated from power system, the transient magnetic field from electric appliances is a major issue presently. In this paper, we measured magnetic field distributions around electric appliances in view of harmonics and analyzed them by the use of an equivalent magnetic dipole moment method. This method was applied to 19 types of appliances, and their equivalent magnetic dipole moments and harmonic components were determined. The results show that this method is applicable to many appliances and the higher frequency magnetic field may induce higher current inside living bodies.
Recently, some policies for reducing standby power, which has quite an effect on electricity consumption, have been employed all over the world. This study surveys the present condition of standby power for major electric home appliances during three years and analyzes the result of technical development reducing standby power. It presents how the industry paid attention to applying the technique of reducing standby power to electric appliances and how it affects the product's energy efficiency. We survey the standby power's change for six items, which were selected from the major electric appliances available on the market. It analyzes the difference of standby power consumption between appliances with a standby power reducing technique and those without during the latest three years. The amount of the average standby power is also compared. The comparison data confirms that the industry's effort and application of reducing standby power contribution has contributed to increasing an appliance's energy efficiency. This study restricted the analyzed items to six appliances, which has been a low volunteered involvement in the standby power reducing program. It is important for reducing standby power consumption of appliances because it contributes to saving electric energy at home and abroad. The development of the standby power reducing technique is needed for more appliances. Along with the development of the standby power reducing technique in the industrial field, it also necessary for consumers to enlarge their understanding of standby power reduction for economic, social, and environmental values.
This study investigates the over time changes in the ownership of kitchen items, electric or non-electric, and examines the patterns of the usage and ownership of the items after categorizing them as followings: cooking appliances, kitchen appliances directly related to storing food, food processing kitchen items, and dining items. The research findings are that refrigerators and rice cookers, among the electric items, had spread to almost every households by 1990s and at the same time about thirty non-electric kitchen items had been used. Refrigerators had been used by more than 100% of the households by 2000, and on top of that, twenty or more electric kitchen items such as Kimchi fridge and freezer had been used. In the case of non-electric kitchen items, approximately 50 to 70 sorts of them are used, which indicates an increase than in 1990s. Rice cookers and gas stoves, among cooking appliances, are recognized as the essential item, and they are actually frequently-used items. As to kitchen appliances related to storing food, each household owns one of the refrigerators and Kimchi fridges, and again they are both the frequently-used. As far as food processing kitchen items are concerned, each household owns at least one or more blenders and hand blenders, six or more knives, and five or more pans. Each household owns seventeen or more rice bowls and soup bowls and twenty-four or more plates. Small plates are more frequently used than large ones.
The objectives of this study are to classify kitchen appliances, to identify the possession of present kitchen appliances, and to predict the future need for appliances of Seoul residents. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires for this study and the sample consisted of 540 households. The results of this study were as follows : The kitchen appliances were classified into the six catagories as major appliances, portable electric appliances, knives small kitchen utensils, cooking utensils, and cookers. There were significant differences in the present possession of kitchen appliances among socioeconomic classes, family life span, housing size, and housing types. And the respondents wanted to possess dish washers, garbage disposals, green grinders, herb electric pots, yogury makers in the future.
