Electrostatic Interference Model of EHD Spraying from an Array of Cone Jets in Electrospray Micro-Thruster

  • Onset voltage plays a crucial role in the design of a spray microthruster. This paper presents an analytical electrostatic model to predict the behavior of onset voltage in an array of emitters. The basic idea of this method is to superimpose the electric potentials obtained from each individual emitter in an array of emitters. The results show that if one emitter operates and the other neighboring emitters are dry, the potential required for cone-jet spraying generally increases as the emitter spacing decreases (due to electrical shielding). However at very close spacing the potential can decrease. If all emitters operate at the same time, the phenomenon that even at very close spacing the onset voltage required for cone-jet spraying increases merely as the emitter spacing decreases.

  • The mode transition from cone-jet to dripping in colloid thruster operation has been analytically investigated. The transition has been predicted by the dynamic behavior of a liquid drop at the tip of the cone-jet. Conservation laws are applied to determine the upward motion of the drop, and an instability model of electrified jets is used to determine the jet breakup. Finally, for the first time, the analysis enables prediction of the transition in terms of the Weber number and electric Bond number. The predictions are in good agreement with experimental data.

  • In spite of many experimental studies of low-power applied-field magnetoplasmadynamic(AFMPD) thrusters, thrust efficiencies of the past thrusters are very low. Hence, drastic improvement in thrust performance is required for AF-MPD thrusters to compete against other types of electric propulsion in a moderate power regime around 10 kW. For the optimization of AF-MPD thrusters, a numerical code for the flowfield simulation is now under development. A preliminary result shows that the code can deal with a complicated mixture of the induced and applied magnetic fields, which will lead to a combination of the self-field, swirl, Hall, as well as electrothermal accelerations.

  • The harmonic distortion level may be significant in electric propulsion systems, as the main loads usually are variable speed propulsion/thruster drives. Distortion of currents and supply voltage waveforms may lead to: Increased power dissipation(losses) in equipment connected to the network, such as generators, motors, transformers, cables, etc., from the harmonic currents, may cause overheating and deterioration of the insulation, and reduced life time of the equipment. In this paper introduced the canceling method of harmonic currents by a multipulse drive with phase shifting transformer. The simulation results indicated a good speed response to the middle speed range of electric propulsion motor. And also, THD(total harmonic distortion) and torque ripple could be reduced in comparing the 12-pulse drive with 6-pulse drive.

  • Hall thrusters are one of the electric propulsion, where ions are accelerated to generate thrust and are widely utilized in space missions due to their high specific impulses. Recently, as the utilization of small and micro satellites with the mass of similar or less than 100 kg is highly increasing, the importance of research and development of the low-power electric propulsion is also raised. In this study, we developed two sub-200 W or less class, laboratory model Hall thrusters and measured the thrust and analyzed the discharge characteristics. Consequently, we obtained 2.5-9.0 mN of thrust, 600-1,150 s of specific impulse, and 15-28% of anode efficiency at 50-175 W of anode power.

  • Dynamic Positioning System(DPS)은 동력, DP control 장치, DP 컴퓨터, 위치참조시스템(PRS), 센서, thruster 시스템 및 DP 운용자(DPO) 7가지로 구성되어 있다. DP 선박은 이들 구성요소들에 문제가 발생하면 그 기능을 상실할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 2001~2010년까지 10년 동안 IMCA 보고된 DP 선박 관련사고 612건에 대한 분석을 바탕으로 DPS의 7가지 구성요소와 관련된 사고 원인을 파악하고 이들 중 가장 높은 비율을 차지하는 원인을 정성적, 정량적으로 상세 분석하여 요소별 관계와 주요 작용 요소를 확인하고자 한다. 이를 통해 DP 선박의 LOP사과 관련 분석에 있어 베이지안 네트워크의 활용성을 확인해 보았다. 10년 평균 가장 높은 비율을 차지한 DPS 사고원인 요인은 PRS이었으며 이를 전문가 브레인스토밍을 통해 작성된 flowchart를 바탕으로 베이지안 네트워크를 통해 상세 분석해 본 결과 PRS의 각 요소별 조건부 확률 확인할 수 있었다. DP 선박의 drive off를 발생시키는데 주요한 영향을 미치는 것은 DGPS, microwave radar 및 HPR 이었고 DGPS에 주요한 영향을 미치는 에러 요인은 signal blocked, electric components failure, relative mode error 및 signal weak or fail 이었다.

High altitude powered lighter-than-air vehicle as remote sensing platform

  • In order to tackle global environmental problems such as destruction of the ozone layer or climatic changes due to atmospheric temperature increase, the acquisition of plentiful and precise data is necessary. Therefore, a means of conducting long-lasting high-resolution measurements over broad areas is required. A feasibility study has been made on a high altitude (20km), super-pressured helium-filled PLTA (Powered Ligher-than-Air) vehicle as an ideal platform for environmental observation. It has a long service life and carries a larger payload than an artificial satellite. This PLTA platform uses an electric propulsion system to maintain position in space against wind currents. The thruster is driven by solar power acquired from solar cells. For night use, solar energy is stored in regenerative fuel cells. This study focuses on energy balance and structural analysis of the hull and platform. The platform is capable of conducting high resolution remote sensing as well as having the capability to serve as a telecommunications relay. The platform could replace a number of ground-based telecommunications relay facilities, guaranteeing sufficient radio frequency intensity to secure good quality telecommunication transmittal. The altitude at which the platform resides has the lowest wind flow in the lower stratosphere, and permits viewing from the ground within a 1,000km range. Because this altitude is much lower than that required of an artificial satellite, the measuring resolution is a couple of thousand times higher than with artificial satellites. The platform can also be used to chase typhoons and observe them from their sources in tropical regions.

  • Spacecraft propulsion system is a kind of rocket engine that has been developed from the end of 1950s for attitude control and orbit maintenance of satellite. Since the spacecraft propulsion system has to be used for a relatively long time, therefore, stability of propellant and life of thruster could be very important factor for propulsion system design. Recently, green propellant propulsion and all electrical propulsion system have became very important issue, and we also need a development according to well organized plan. In this paper, we will introduce the development status, key technologies and development prospect of spacecraft propulsion system.

  • Latching valves are operated like solenoid valves by open/close command and they maintain final open or close commend without electric power source, so they are widely used in propulsion system of satellite and launch vehicle requiring reliability and being subject of restriction of power. This paper present design and test procedure of latching valve using permanent magnet polarized solenoid, which is developed for 45N Hydrazine propulsion system, to estimate feasibility of design and manufacture of latching valve.
